LGBTQ youth face higher online risks This article is based mainly on a 2013 GLSEN report about young LGBTQ people's Internet use which found that LGBTQ youth face much higher levels of cyber bullying. But it argues that because of the many dangers and exclusions that LGBTQ youth face in real life it is, "no wonder that young people struggling with gender and sexuality issues seek the online world as a safe haven for their problems.....LGBTQ youth use the Internet to connect with other LGBTQ youth, seek out information and resources on sexuality and gender identity, and express themselves in an honest way that they often don’t feel comfortable doing IRL (in real life)." Out Online: The Experiences of LGBT Youth on the Internet This is a summary of GLSEN's 2013 survey of LGBTQ youth. It found high levels of cyberbullying of LGBTQ people but reports that: "Despite experiences of bullying and harassment online, LGBT youth indicated the Internet is also a space that offers safer opportunities to express who they are, find peer support and gain access to resources not necessarily available in person." The Internet’s Multiple Roles in Facilitating the Sexual Orientation Identity Development of Gay and Bisexual Male Adolescentst This is an academic paper that looks at the development of sexual orientation identity in young gay and bisexual men and the role that the Internet plays in that. It reports that "the Internet provided a range of functions with regard to the exploration and acceptance of their sexual orientation identity, including: 1) increasing self awareness of sexual orientation identity; 2) learning about gay/bisexual community life; 3) communicating with other gay/bisexual people; 4) meeting other gay/bisexual people; 5) finding comfort and acceptance with sexual orientation; and 6) facilitating the coming out process."
