In this cycle, I researched about refugees. In my presentation, I had 5 main points about refugee.
First, I talked about refugee's definition, reason for being refugee and the number of the refugees. There are some reasons for being refugee. For example, race, religion, political opinion and so on. I think that many people already know these reasons. I told the new thing that LGBT is also one of the reason for being refugee.
The number of the refugees is still increasing. Now, there are 59.5 million people who are forcibly displaced including refugees all over the world. The listener was surprised that people who live in the top 3 major source counties of refugees (Syria, Afghanistan, Somalia) account for 53% of all refugees.
Secondly, I told about the hosting counties. The top hosting county is Turkey, and Turkey has ever accepted 1.59 million refugees. In addition, Japan recognized just 11 people as refugee last year. This number is very few compared with Turkey and other developed counties. I asked the question that why the difference of acceptance rate between Japan and Turkey is so big.
Next, I talked about the situation of Japan and that of Turkey.
The situation of Japan is third main point. Japan's acceptance rate is so low because of the system of refugee status. Japan's system has own accreditation criteria. It is very strict, so most of the asylum seekers can't be recognized as refugee in Japan. In recent years, fake refugee becomes big problem in not only Japan but also other counties. Therefore, Ministry of Justice is concerned about this problem strongly.
Next, about the situation of Turkey. It is fourth main point. Turkey accepted about 1.60 million refugees and the most hosting countries. Turkey spend about 460 billion yen for refugees. However, Turkey already reached its limit, so there are some problems. For example, ejection, firing on the border, education and so on.
Last main point is future. We should think over the solutions of refugee's problem. According to Japanese national questionnaire (905 people), 64% of them answered that Japan should accept refugees more. However, Japan's system of refugee status is very strict, so it is difficult.
Abe Shinzo, The Prime Minister, decided that Japan will donate 97 billion yen for refugee assistance. We thought that Japan should help them in a way that Japan can do.
In addition, UNHCR shows three durable solutions. They are ➀voluntary repatriation, ➁local integration, ➂resettlement to a third country.
I talked what we should do in order to decrease the number of the refugees and help them with the listener.
We should know about the refugee's present situation more, and the number of various support for refugees will increase in the world.
