i. What have you learnt from your research this week? Who/Where did the information come from? What are the key issues? Who are important actors and what are their positions on the issues?
I have learnt about the general information of Myanmar, the JICA’s supports, and the relationship between the Japanese government and Myanmar government.
There are 51,410,000 people living in Myanmar (Myanmar government census. Sep.2014). The picture below shows that the proportion of the young-age group is big and the Myanmar government’s census is not reliable. 1367 Japanese are living in Myanmar(Dec.2014), and 9231 Myanmar are living in Japan (June 2014). Myanmar was ruled by a military government from 1962 to 2011, but was transferred to representative government in March 2011. Even though the literacy rate is quite high in Myanmar, it is one of the Asia’s poorest countries because of under-developed economy and corruption.
The Japanese government has established its diplomatic relations with the Myanmar government in November 1954. Myanmar exports clothing, marine products and footwear, and imports car and machinery. It was the 60th Anniversary last year.
JICA (Japan International Corporation Agency)supports Myanmar government and people in economic and legal ways. For example, JICA helps for capacity development, urban development in Yangon, and maintain basic laws.
ii. How has your thinking about your research area changed or developed?
I didn’t know that the diplomatic relations between the Japanese government and Myanmar government has such a long history. I was surprised that both countries exchange not only trading goods, but also cultures and people. I think Myanmar is different from other developing countries because developing countries usually cannot develop because of the low rate of literacy, lack of infrastructure and so on. Also, I wonder how Japanese government has communicated with the Myanmar government after it was taken over by military in 1962.
iii. What do you want to focus now? Which issues, and actors and positions on those issues, do you want to look at? What are your specific research questions now?
I’d like to focus on the advantages and disadvantages of each actor such as the Japanese government, Myanmar government, JICA and Japanese companies to support or supported. Myanmar is called as the Last Frontier, so many companies should think to expand its business.
My research questions are
*Why Japanese government or JICA support Myanmar (government)?
*What do Myanmar government or people want?
*What was the relationship between two countries during military time? And now? (are there any differences?)
