i. What have you learnt from your research this week? Who/Where did the information come from? What are the key issues? Who are important actors and what are their positions on the issues?
This week, I researched about the Korean history education with using internet and conducting interview to a Korean student.
Wikipedia said that in Korea, they study different era in history classes at each schools, like elementary, junior high and high school.
CWSprivate said that they have history classes of East Asia and they always think of the relationship among East Asia countries.
And I asked my Korean friends some questions. In middle school, they have 2 or 3 history classes per week and in high school, they study history to pass their entrance exam. So each school has their own. And I had an example, DFL my friend went to. They learn history only in first semester of 1st grade. And I had a question. Are Korean history textbook written about the relations with Japan and Japanese war responsibility during world war and how? He said it’s considered to be important. The responsibility between Japan and Korea in history education. They study two points and they are big part of Korean history classes. One is the war of Hideyoshi Tokugawa. (朝鮮出兵) Japan taught a lot of cultures to Korea, but they were colonized by Japan. The other is the colony history by Japan. (韓国併合) And they focus on the war-time history, the forced labors and the comfort women. They are very big part of Korean history classes, so half of modern history classes is Japanese colony history.
In Korean friend’s opinion, it’s very serious problem I feel sorry about it. We have to accept the sad fact and realize we shouldn’t do it again. I think this is history class’s real purpose. If Japan embrace the sad history, I think both two countries can be real partner! (294 words)
ii. How has your thinking about your research area changed or developed?
I also thought it is very serious problem and we have to share each information between Japan and Korea. I think we had better make a common textbook in the world and share our history. And I came to be interested in the recognition to Japanese of Korean young people. (50 words)
