You can access all online articles in the Asahi Shimbun AJW and Japan Times for free from the Chuo Library.
If you access them from a personal computer, you will only be able to read a small number of articles for free each month:
Asahi Shimbun AJW (English edition of the Asahi Shimbun)
• You can read 5 articles per month online for free without subscribing.
• You can also read all the articles for free on the Asahi Shimbun Digital English site (but this site only has some, not all, of the articles from the Asahi Shimbun on it).
• If you have a regular subscription ($11.96 per month), you can access all the old and new articles in English and Japanese on the Asahi Shimbun. You can find more information about subscribing and can register here.
• You can access the Japanese version of the Asahi Shimbun for free from Manaba but this doesn't seem to give free access to all English Asahi articles.
• You can read 5 articles per month online for free without registering (without becoming a member).
• If you are a member (which is also free), you can read 20 articles online per month (although some or all articles older than a month are not accessible). Get more information about being a member and sign up here (you only need to give your name and email address).
• If you register for the Digital Lite plan (￥900 per month), you can read 80 storiesarticles a month including 10 articles older than one month (Kyodo archive articles). Get more details about the Digital Lite plan here.
