Sensor / Probe

  1. Star Chart by Escape Velocity LimitedUses GPS technology to give an accurate 3-D simulation of the visible universe. By pointing your smart phone at any point in the sky, Star Chart can tell you what you are looking at.

  2. Star Chart calculates in real time the current location of every star, planet and moon visible from Earth and shows you precisely where they are; eve in broad daylight!

  3. You can point your device at a star and find out what star or

  4. planet it is.You can find out what the night sky looks like to people on the other side of the earth by pointing the device down.

  5. Accurately depicts the visible stars of the northern and southern hemispheres--a total of approximately 120,000 stars

  6. You can fly to explore all the planets of the solar system, their moons and the sun all in beautiful 3D with state of the art visual effects

  7. The Time Shift feature allows you to shift up to 10,000 years forward or backwards in time.

  8. Displays all 88 constellations with constellation imagery based on artwork by 17th century astronomer Johannes Hevelius

  9. Includes the complete Messier catalogue of 110 exotic deep sky objects.

  10. Tap on anything in the sky and get the facts on what you are looking at, including distances and brightness

  11. Manually set your location to find out what the sky looks like from anywhere in the world.

Sample Investigation

PLOTTING THE SPECTRAL CLASS OF THE STARS THAT MAKE UP YOUR CONSTELLATION ON THE HERTZSPRUNG-RUSSELL DIAGRAM

Mnemonic for Remembering the Spectral Classes

"Oh Be a Fine Girl/Guy, Kiss Me"

SPECTRAL CLASS OF A STAR HAS THREE ASSIGNED VALUES

for example K3III

  1. LETTER -surface temperature of the star (O,B,A,F,G,K, AND M where O is the hottest temperature)

  2. NUMERIC DIGIT-each letter is subdivided using a numeric digit with 0 being the hottest and 9 being coolest.

  3. ROMAN NUMERAL-luminosity class 0, I, II, III, IV, V, sd, and D

0 hypergiants IV sub giants

I supergiants V main sequence star

II bright giants sd sub dwarfs

III regular giants D white dwarfs

HR Diagram

The Hertzsprung-Russell Diagram is actually a graph that illustrates the relationship that exists between the average surface temperature of stars and their absolute magnitude, which is how bright they would appear to be if they were all the same distance away. Rather than speak of the brightness of stars, the term "luminosity" is often used. Luminosity is a measure of how much energy leaves a star in a certain period of time

Provide a sample investigation that you conducted using the data collected by the probe/app. Include independent variable, dependent variables, constants and controls.
