Materials needed

You can use any and all materials that you have access to in order to make a device that can mimic the effects of the common "foam roller." Many different foam rollers can be found on the market but can be in excess of thirty dollars. Your task is to build one for under $20.00 total cost taxes included.

Procedure

Modern foam rollers that are used for myofascial self release can make a huge difference in one's physical well being. By rolling out the knots that slowly tighten up in our bodies due to stress and everyday events this massage implement that uses just your body weight is a real game changer. But currently there are only a few items on the market. Your task is to make a better version of the foam roller, or introduce something new to the niche market.

The task at hand is to purchase equipment that you think will increase the "relaxing / self release" of the muscles and perhaps find a more "comfortable" solution. Any and all items can be purchased as long as the total coast of the purchase, including taxes, is below $20.00.

The class will then try out your "new and improved" version of an object that can perform myofascial self release and grade it on the Likert scale compared to a commonplace foam roller and massage bar.

Questions

  • Q: What is myofascial self release?

  • A: It is a manipulative treatment that attempts to release tension in the fascia due to trauma, posture, or inflammation. Connective tissues called fascia surround the muscles, bones, nerves, and organs of the body.

  • Q: Why is an item like the one we are trying to build important?

  • A: Not everyone can afford a personal masseuse or take the time to spend $20.00-$100.00 an hour every time they get 'tense' By personally being able to use your own strength and / or body weight to help keep your body healthy, it is a very wise investment.

  • Q: What are the main muscle groups being focused on?

  • A: Depending on the implement being used, the whole body can receive benefits. In terms of the body the main focus is on the muscles. Clearly, some are out of reach. For example: you face has muscles. But myofascial self release is not for the face. The intended use of the product can target major muscle groups and segments of the groups including but not limited to: quadriceps, hamstrings, calves (gastrocnemius and soleus), inferior portion of the foot, the back (lats and trapezius), even the triceps and biceps of the arm can benefit at the proper angles, including the inner groin when used on a padded weight lifting bench.
