Reactions

  1. Chemical reactions are processes in which atoms are rearranged into different combinations of molecules. As a basis for understanding this concept:

a. Students know reactant atoms and molecules interact to form products with different chemical properties.

e. Students know how to determine whether a solution is acidic, basic, or neutral.

  • Grades 9-12

Chemistry - Acids & Bases

  1. Acids, bases, and salts are three classes of compounds that form ions in water solutions. As a basis for understanding this concept:

a. Students know the observable properties of acids, bases, and salt solutions.

b. Students know acids are hydrogen-ion-donating and bases are hydrogen-ion-accepting substances.

c. Students know strong acids and bases fully dissociate and weak acids and bases partially dissociate.

d. Students know how to use the pH scale to characterize acid and base solutions

Questioning Script:

  • Prior Knowledge & Experience

    • Basic egg structure

    • Acids & Bases

    • Chemical Reactions

  • Root Questions:

    • How can you peel a raw egg?

    • What impact do acidic foods have on dental health?

    • Does fluoride toothpaste help protect teeth from decay?

  • Target Response:

    • The acid in the vinegar reacts with the calcium carbonate in the eggshell.

      • This reaction yields calcium acetate, carbon dioxide (bubbles produced), and water.

    • Acidic foods can damage teeth. Teeth can become weak or soft with prolonged exposure to acids found in foods.

    • Anti-cavity (fluoride enriched) toothpaste can help protect teeth from decay.

  • Common Misconceptions:

    • It is imposible to peel a raw egg.

    • Acidic foods do not damage teeth.

    • Toothpaste cleans teeth, but it does not help keep teeth strong.
