Principles Illustrated

Bernoulli's Principle: as the velocity of a fluid increases, the pressure exerted by that fluid decreases

Standards

Physical Principles in Living Systems (Physical Sciences)

6. Physical principles underlie biological structures and functions. As a basis for understanding

this concept:

j. Students know that contractions of the heart generate blood pressure and that

heart valves prevent backflow of blood in the circulatory system.

Questioning Script

Prior knowledge & experience:

What happens when you blow on a straw?

Root question:

What will happen to the water when a stream of fast air is blown on top of the straw?

Target response:

The horizontal straw creates a stream of fast flowing air which creates a low pressure area above the straw placed in the water, this causes the water to rise.

Common Misconceptions:

The common misconception is that the only way to draw water with a straw is to suck on the straw.
