Understanding Tax Withholding

For employees, withholding is the amount of federal income tax withheld from your paycheck. The amount of income tax your employer withholds from your regular pay depends on The amount you earn. The information you give your employer on Form W–4.

Employees must designate the number of withholding allowances they wish to claim on their paycheck. To update, increase, or change the number of exemptions, you have two options:


W-4 Withholding

Complete Form W-4 so your employer can withhold the correct federal income tax from your pay. Consider completing a new Form W-4 each year and when your personal or financial situation changes. This change may also be done electronically in the Employee Self Service System.


How do I know how much to claim for dependent deductions or other deductions on my W-4?


Publication 505, Tax Withholding and Estimated Tax, is available on the IRS website. This publication is typically updated in March (for the current year) and provides information useful to employees regarding Tax Withholding, Estimated Tax, Credit for Withholding and Estimated Tax, Underpayment Penalty, and How To Get Tax Help.


Changing your W-4 Withholding

Your W-4 withholdings can be changed in ESS. Please click on the W-4 Tax Withholding link under Personal Information on the main ESS page. Then click on the gray box next to the valid tax dates and "Display." This should take you to a page where you can change your W-4 withholdings.
