Preparing for First Week
First Week Preparation
Not knowing the key details always exacerbates anxiety when starting a new job. The following activities are recommended best practices from leaders at all court levels in the state and departments in the administrative office.
Prepare a draft performance plan from these generic templates. Use this to discuss the job's alignment with the Courts' mission and the new employee's individual performance expectations. Prepare to discuss questions the new employee may have about onboarding. Incorporate as appropriate in the final performance plan (structure of courts, district, teams, etc.). Make a plan to discuss (on the first day or during the first week) what they learned by asking the two impact questions and incorporate those findings as appropriate into the performance plan you will finalize before they finish their first month on the job.
Order or provide other equipment needs
Review standard procedures, policies, etc.
Provide contact lists and lists of important websites
Ensure access to necessary printers, applications, etc.
What can management and the new employee expect from HR during the first week?
Entering a new employee takes time. We understand new employees and management are excited to get their benefits and direct deposit set up. Please help new employees know this information will be sent to them as soon as possible (typically during their first week of employment).
Employee Self-Service (ESS): HR will send an email to the new employee, their direct supervisor, and the district administrative assistant containing the new employee's EIN, UtahID account information, ESS login instructions, and direct deposit set-up instructions.
Health & Retirement Benefits: HR will email the new employee with information regarding health and retirement benefits.
Note: The Defensive Driving and Security Awareness trainings require a UtahID login. New employees will receive UtahID login information within their first week of employment.
