The Onboarding, Mentoring, and Coaching Program in the Pacific East District has been developed as a program to provide support for educators new to the district and to support educator development. The Pacific East District developed new teacher mentor extra duty compensation contracts and hired new teacher mentors for all Pacific East District Schools. Over the course of the program’s development and growth, the Pacific East District provided monthly and then quarterly collaborative sessions for new teacher mentors, developed the teacher mentor guide, and developed a long term action plan to support teacher growth and learning.
The Pacific East District has positively impacted the onboarding, mentoring, and coaching processes as evidenced by:
Providing new teacher mentors at each Pacific East School
Outlining the role of the new teacher mentor to ensure ongoing support for new educators to the Pacific East
Developing a bank of resources for new teacher mentors to help support new teachers in the Pacific East District
In an effort to formalize a systemic structure of onboarding, mentoring, and coaching across the district, a Professional Learning Library was developed to have a one-stop-shop for new educators. This structure featured a welcome message from our district leadership, information on our six complexes, content area ISSs, and highlights of current district initiatives to include the instructional framework.
During the 2017-2018 school year, the Pacific East District was directed by the region to develop a district working group/team composed of ISSs. This team drafted and proposed ideas for a systemic Pacific East onboarding and mentorship program. This team also reviewed the EDC (Extra Duty Compensation) template provided by the region. During this school year, using the region guide, a bank of resources were developed for new teacher mentors. The Professional Learning Library was socialized as a tool to support Teacher Mentors.
In the 2018-2019 school year, the Pacific East District continued to utilize new teacher mentors. At their respective schools, mentors continued to meet with new educators on a monthly basis to support their individual needs. Additional resources were developed, organized and focused on the improvement priority of onboarding and mentoring. The Professional Learning library was being monitored and adjusted to meet the needs of new educators.
During the 2019-2020 school year, the Pacific East District switched to quarterly meetings for new teacher mentors. The Pacific East District also developed a draft mentor handbook for new teacher mentors. The new teacher mentors were provided with quarterly meetings to support their development in supporting new teachers. An end of year needs assessment was administered to help develop next steps for SY 2020-2021. The Professional Learning library was being monitored and adjusted to meet the needs of new educators.
In SY 2020-2021, Onboarding, Mentoring, and Coaching was aligned under our District Strategic Plan as a critical initiative working group. An Onboarding, Coaching, Mentoring handbook and websites were revised to establish and implement expectations for onboarding, coaching and mentoring practices across the Pacific East District. A Teacher mentor Extra Duty Contract was implemented as a fenced position for all schools across the district. The new teacher mentors were provided with quarterly meetings by the Onboarding, Mentoring, and Coaching working group to support the development of new teachers.
