Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is an academic course that prepares students for success through college and career readiness. Classes are scheduled during the regular school day as a year-long course. DoDEA Pacific East adopted the AVID program in 1994 across the organization and supports the DoDEA Blueprint’s commitment to developing Student Excellence. Today there are eleven dynamic AVID teachers, twenty one AVID Sections, and over three hundred AVID students in the Pacific East. Students are accepted into the program based on several factors such as being identified as the academic middle, having Honors or AP potential, or possessing leadership qualities. AVID students engage in structured tutorials, research colleges, interact with guest speakers, receive personal mentoring, have access to rigorous coursework, participate in college field trips, and most importantly, receive support in courses of rigor.
AVID’s mission is to close the opportunity gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society. Evidence for annual AVID certification is collected for each school site and is based on both site data and the implementation of four schoolwide domains: Instruction, Systems, Leadership, and Culture. Many schools in the Pacific East District have adopted AVID’s WICOR (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, Reading) strategies to assist in the district’s goal to implement 21st Century Innovative Skills and in alignment with the strategic theme of student-led discourse.
In addition to annual certification, the AVID ISS conducts implementation and refresher training for new and current AVID Elective Teachers, provides professional development in AVID resources and curriculum, and provides guidance to leadership on school-level and district-wide implementation needs. The AVID program is overseen by the AVID Pacific Region Instructional Systems Specialist (ISS).
AVID has had a positive impact on college and career readiness and student instruction in the Pacific East District, as evidenced by:
A continued gradual increase in AVID Site Teams and that work alongside Continuous School Improvement Leadership Teams (CSILT) to bring about awareness and implement new goals that are in support of the AVID program.
A uniform platform where AVID teachers can engage in Focused Collaboration to support student agency.
The continued expansion of school goals to include and actively seek AVID strategies as a data driven resource in support of student readiness.
AVID Center changed the certification documents and procedures from the Certification Self-Study (CCS) Evidence with the 11 Essentials to the Certification and Coaching Instrument (CCI) with four domains (Instructions, Systems, Leadership and Culture). During this time, the AVID ISS worked with Elective Teachers and Coordinators to transition to the new documentation system. The office also completed annual certification and school level reports on school and program demographics per AVID Center requirements.
This school year focused on the CCI for annual certification and the new evidence locker on Sharepoint. The AVID ISS worked with AVID Elective Teachers and Coordinators to collect the appropriate data and utilize Sharepoint. The office also completed annual certification and school-level reports on school and program demographics per AVID Center requirements.
The AVID ISS worked across the district to provide support and training for current and new educators through a hybrid course on Schoology: “AVID: A Schoolwide Approach.” The course was also offered for credit through the University of San Diego and Ashland University. The goal of the course was not only to allow AVID Site Teams and educators to collaborate across the region (all three districts) but also to develop a highly functioning AVID site team by implementing best practices and analyzing trend data on AVID enrollment. The office transitioned to Google Shared Drive for evidence collection which continues to be the preferred platform. The office also completed annual certification and school-level reports on school and program demographics per AVID Center requirements.
This school year, the AVID office continued to provide the course “AVID: A Schoolwide Approach” asynchronously to accommodate the transition to remote learning and bridge the difficulties posed by differing time zones across the Pacific region, as noted in the previous school year.
Focused Collaboration time was aligned across the district to enable district-wide, job-alike collaboration among AVID Elective Teachers and Coordinators, which allowed the AVID ISS to provide more consistent guidance and routine mentorship.
The AVID ISS worked alongside the English Language Arts and the Professional Learning ISSs in each complex to teach the course, “AVID: Content Area Writing,” to teachers across all content/subject areas.
In March, the office capitalized on digital curricular resources provided by AVID Center to assist teachers with the transition to remote learning.
The office also completed annual certification and school-level reports on school and program demographics per AVID Center requirements.
The AVID ISS coordinated logistics for the training of two AVID Elective Teachers to attend the Summer Institute training, but it was switched to the Digital XP Summer Institute in response to COVID mitigation measures.
There was a growth in schools across the district using AVID WICOR strategies as action steps in their school improvement plans to address 21st century skills and literacy in all content areas. The AVID regional ISS was instrumental in providing schools with resources and training to increase WICOR implementation in classrooms.
The AVID Pacific Region also transitioned to an ePortfolio for CCI evidence collection. The supporting documents are still collected using the Google Shared Drive, however the ePortfolio allows for an enhanced presentation of information.
The AVID ISS helped coordinate training for AVID Champions and the Summer Institute training for the region’s leadership (administrators and superintendents). The office completed annual certification and school-level reports on school and program demographics per AVID Center requirements. In addition, the AVID regional ISS will be the Pacific point of contact to coordinate training for the AVID Professional Learning Trajectory that is spearheaded by the headquarters AVID ISS and to be implemented across DoDEA.
From the graph below we can observe the percentage of total population of students enrolled in AVID at each school. The AVID program is constantly recruiting students who meet the criteria to participate in a program with proven impact on student success. Enrollment in the AVID program is inherently in a state of flux due to the change in eligible students in the population and the inevitable change in duty stations of our military population, which accounts for approximately 30% turnover a year overall in the Pacific East District.
With the data provided below we observe that, although the number of Highly Certified AVID programs decreased from three to one over the time period shown, the overall number of Certified and Highly Certified programs increased from five to seven of the nine schools eligible for AVID programs.
The Longitudinal Report of AVID Secondary Site Data for the Pacific East District. It is important to note the increases in AVID schools, growth in overall enrollment, the number of AVID Elective sections offered, the number of 6th graders enrolled, and the number of AVID students taking a college course for credit.
During the 2020-2021 school year, a new system was developed that enabled the collection of AVID Evidence through the use of an ePortfolio. This information is available to administrators and superintendents throughout the district.
At the beginning of each year, DoDEA offers an AVID Implementation Training for new AVID Elective Teachers and those in need of a refresher. Throughout the years, several Professional Learning Opportunities have been offered for educators throughout the Pacific Region. Review the links below for additional AVID opportunities.

AVID Coordinators upload AVID Site Data information regarding their school in February of each year. While The AVID Center is currently revising the AVID data platform, each annual data report represented is individually displayed. The collective report can be found in the Longitudinal Report of AVID Secondary Site Data.
