The Tower of London and Tower Bridge

The tower of London and tower Bridge

Tower of London is a historic monument on the north bank of the River Thames. It is often identified with the White Tower, the original stark square fortress built by William the Conqueror in 1078. However, the tower as a whole is a complex of several buildings set within two concentric rings of defensive walls and a moat. The tower's primary function was a fortress, a royal palace, and a prison. This last use has led to the phrase " sent to the tower" meaning "imprisoned".

It has also served as a place of execution and torture, an armory, a treasury, a zoo, the Royal Mint, a public records office, an observatry, and since 1303, the home of the Crown Jewels of the United Kingdom.

The men who guard the Tower are the warders of beefeaters. Their uniform dates from 1500.

As every school child knows, there have been ravens at the Tower of London since time immemorial, and if they ever leave, the monarchy and the tower itself will fall.

Tower bridge

Tower Bridge is the most famous bridge in London. It crosses the River Thames near the Tower of London. The bridge is 244 metres long and its two towers are 65 metres tall. The middle of the bridge can open to let large boats pass. It opens about a thousand times every year
