My favourite capital city

London

"When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life" Samuel Johnson.

London is a busy, cosmopolitan city on the River Thames in south-east England. it is the capital city and has more than twelve million inhabitants from all corners of the world.

The first inhabitant of London made their homes next of the river. After the Great Fire of London in 1666, most of the city was rebuilt and a lot of famous buildings, for example, St Paul's cathedral, date from that time.

Getting around London can be a problem. There is a lot of traffic so it is often quicker to do short distances on foot. The underground covers a huge area and is usually quicker than buses, but it is rather expensive. If you want to bring your car into the city you have to pay a special tax. This has helped to reduce the traffic problems.

There are a lot of things to see and do in London. For example, there are historical sites, some of the best museums and art galleries in the world, fascinating street markets, and modern tourist attractions like the London Eye. All year, excellent plays, concerts and musicals are on the at the city's hundreds of theatres.

In short, London is my favourite capital city. Although it is big and crowded, it is always exciting. It is the perfect place to spend a few days visiting galleries, shopping, going to the theatre or just sitting in one of the thousands international cafés watching the world go by.

Imagine you have been to Cardiff, the capital of Wales. Use the notes and the model text to write about the city.-

Cardiff

Background: south-east Wales, population more than 300,000

History: small town until 19th century Industrial Revolution, coal exported from the port, became capital of Wales 1955.

Some things to do: National Gallery of Wales, Cardiff Castle, the Millennium stadium- home to Welsh rugby and (rock) concerts.

Bad things: used to have lots of heavy industry (coal, steel)- dirty and smelly, now clean, lots of modern buildings.

Like it because: friendly people, easy to get around, next to the sea.
