“humbly Sheweth That your Petitioner has Just arrived with his Family (Eleven in number Four of which is men able to bear arms) from North Carolina, has suffered everything but Death by the American Revolution had property in Land 800 Acres all of which was taken from him and Sold by the Rebels (that were then Titled). He begs leave to inform your Excellency that he faithfully adhered to the British Government and can produce Witnesses of his Loyalty. “Respectfully Shews—That your Petitioner came into the Province two years ago, with his Family consisting of a wife & Ten children – & has received for himself & them 1200 acres of Land. That altho’ your Petitioner by no means presumes to ask any indemnification for his Losses, yet he hopes your Excellencys Indulgence, to state, that from his Attachment to Government and having joined the Army of Lord Cornwallis, he lost all his property both real and personal, to a considerable amount his Lands having been 800 Acres – for which losses he never had an opportunity to apply, as no Commissioner, to his knowledge, ever came to North Carolina—He also begs leave to add, that since his arrival in this Province, and before he could raise sufficient to support his Family he has expended upwards of £700 NY Cy – not to mention the charges of his Journey from Carolina—Your Petitioner therefore prays your Excellency would be pleased to grant his Family such addition to the Lands they have received as to your Excellency in your  wisdom may seem meet, and that the same may be in the Township of Townsend, Settlement of Long Point – and your Petitioner as in duty bound will ever pray—” [Unsigned] Received at the Executive Council Office on 13 May and read in Council on 12 Jul. “Humbly Sheweth That your Petitioner in the year 1777 then reside in Albany County and hearing that Genel Burgoyne wished that all the Loyalists would join him at Still-water. – Your petitioner with others went to him to know the certainty of it, but he advised that they would still remain neutral till he would send them word. – I then joined Colol Peters corps there, and was then employed, (with two others) by Govenr Scheen by order of Genel Burgoyne to go down the North River till we could hear with certainty if Genel Clinton ment to come up the North river, which I performed with great difficulty and hazard of my life, for which service I was promised at my return great reward, but on returning was informed that Genel Burgoyne was captured, which made it impracticable for me to get him word, and was then taken prisoner and detained in Albany prison three months, but as soon as I could make my escape came to this place and joined Colol Butlers Corps in which I served as Serjeant till the corps was disbanded – Likewise your Petitioner in the years 1780 and 1781 was employed by Colol Butler three different times to go into the States for inteligence and bring in all the Recruits I could get, which I performed and helped to bring in at different times upwards of Sixty men, for which Services I was promised, but never received any recompence. – Now your Petitioner most humbly beg your Honor will please to take his case into consideration and if his Services merit any reward, that you will please to grant him what quantity of Land you may think proper—And your Petitioner as in Duty bound will ever pray [Signed] Christn Wanner Capt Militia” Read in the Executive Council on 9 May 1797. “We do hereby Certify that Christian Wanner Late a Serjent in Butlers Rangers did in the beginning of the American War take a decided part in favor of the Crown, that in the year 1777 he went to General Burgoyne’s Camp then at Still Water, at the request of us the subscribers and in behalf of considerable number of friends to Government who were desirous to show their Loyalty by Joining his Majesty’s forces if desired and practicable. This service he performed at a great Risk, as this happened but a few weeks before Genl Burgoyne surrendered, and that he was for this act put in Albany Jail where he remained the Winter following, and in the Spring 1778 he Joined Butlers Rangers and served in said Corps to the end of the War during his service in the Rangers he was always Ranked among the most Active was very usefull in bringing of men, on which business he went several times from nere to the North River and was very successfull in his undertaking. At the end of the War he settled in the Township of Newark where he has made large improvements and has in every respect behaved himself as a good industrous inhabitant. “Sir—I take the liberty to transmit to you an extract from a Letter received by me from Major Green Secry to the Lt Governor dated Quebec Octr 8 1801 – 

“The Lt Govr desires that you will state to the Ch. Justice the offer made by Jno Warren Junr for a Lease of the Ferry at Fort Erie for the purpose of being by his laid before the Council, who will Report to the L Govr their opinion on that Subject; At the same time he sees no Objection to Mr Warren having the Ferry, but he wishes to have the Opinion of the Council first on that Subject”

I having been suggested that a person of the name of Canby at Queenston had obtained a promise, or some Authority from the late Lt Govr Simcoe for a Lease of that Ferry, I made the proper enquiries on the Subject, & have it under his had that he received no such promise, nor posses any authority for the obtaining of the Lease in Question—The Terms proposed by M Warren were £10 Hal: yearly for a Lease of 7 years or £12 of like currency for a Lease of longer Duration – adding that if such offer should not meet with approbation, he should with to be informed what Terms the L Govr and Council would accept—I have the Honor to be with respect Sir your humble Servt [Signed] Thos Scott [To] Hon: the Ch: Justice &c &c &c”

Upper Canada Land Petition of Captain Robert Pilkington dated at York (Toronto) on 23 Mar 1799

“Sheweth That Lot Number One in the second Concession of the Township of Grantham containing one Hundred Acres, was given by the Land Board of the District to Thomas Marsh and afterwards transferred by the same Board, for a bona fide consideration to Daniel Cassada of whom your Memorialist purchased the said Lot: as will appear by the Bond of the said Daniel Cassada to your Memorialist, and also a Power of Attorney to take out the Deed. But as the said Thomas Marsh is no longer in the Province, the said Daniel Cassada cannot obtain a regular Title so as to convey the Land in discharge of his Bond, whereby your Memorialist is in danger of losing both his Land and Money: Therefore he prays to surrender His Majesty’s Deed to Thomas Marsh, and that another Deed may issue securing the said Land to your Memorialist. And your Memorialist further sheweth That Lot number One Hundred and Sixty four in the Township of Newark was located by James Merkle of whom John Waterhouse purchased the same, as will appear by certain affidavits made as to that fact; the said James Merkle being now out of the Province. That your Memorialist hath also purchased the said Lot, for a bona fide consideration; and as no Deed hath as yet issued he humbly prays that His Majesty’s Deed may confirm him in the same.
