“Most humbly Sheweth That your Petitioner left England in March 1792 arrived in Canada the June following, has resided in Upper Canada ever since, but has never taken up any lands, he is now engaged in the Mercantile business with Mr John MacKay at Newark, he wishes to take up Lands in this Province, he considers himself able to manage a considerable Tract—Wherefore your Petitioner prays your Excellency would be pleased to grant him Twelve Hundred acres of Land on Kettle Creek, Lake Erie, & your Petitioner as in duty bound will ever pray [Signed] Richard Hatt” Received at the Executive Council Office on 17 Aug 1795. “Humbly Sheweth That your petitioners father with his family being about to remove from Old England into this province agreeable to the Letter from him which your Petitioner Presumes to annex hereunto, your Petitioner humbly hopes your Excellency will grant a suitable allotment of Land for them to settle upon when arrived here. That your Petitioner’s father and family being possessed of considerable property & bringing with them all suitable materials for erecting mills and everything necessary for farming upon an extensive Scale and a Considerable number of indented Men Servants from a Source of undisputed Principles & morals your Petitioner hopes that a conditional grant upon a liberal Scale will be made to him & to his family. “Dear Richard I am now come to the resolution of coming out to Upper Canada, with all my Family & Six young men as Indented Servants, since the Decease of your Dear mother I have nothing to detain me here in England, beside I think my Family may obtain better Settlement with you, then in the Old Country. I do not care where I live, my lease of the Farm is out at Michs next, and the rise of Rent & Repairs, I shall expend as much money as will obtain a good Settlement in upper Canada, as we are Farmers. Your Brothers & I can manage a considerable Tract, we will take Care to bring proper Letters of recommendation &c with us. You will make application in a proper manner, to his Excellency Governor Simcoe, for the proportion of Land we are Intitled to Receive as Loyallists. That is, for Richard Hatt Senr, Richd Hatt Jr, Augustus Hatt, Samuel Hatt, Mary Hatt, and Susannah Hatt, with Six Indented Servants. “Humbly sheweth That your Petitioners having been favored by your Excellency with the grant of a Lot each in the Village projected at the Head of Coots Paradise and wishing to avail themselves of their situation, by erecting a Merchant grist mill as well as Store Houses thereon & to which Battoes have an easy access – but in order that a mill on their aforesaid Lots might be furnished with water – it seems necessary that a race of cannal be conducted thereto through other lots of the village; – Vizt from No 12—to No 2 your Petitioner Lots, or perhaps where an actual Survey these have been made, it may be led through to the back Street or irregular spaces – Your Petitioners therefore humbly pray your Excellency would be pleased to allow them to open a race or canal for the purpose aforesaid – & which if found requisite they would cover with Plank & Slats – and your Petitioners as in Duty bound shall ever pray – [Signed] R. & S. Upper Canada Land Petition of Richard and Samuel Hatt of Ancaster – Merchants dated at York (Toronto) on 28 Apr 1801

“Humbly sheweth—That your Petitioners having been frequently led to send Flour from the Head of the Lake have been compelled to expose it on the Beach to the weather and other accidents—That it being very desirable to have a Storehouse erected at some convenient spot on the said Beach, near to which small Vessels might come, or where a pier might be carried out to form a Harbour—Your Petitioners humbly pray your Excellency to grant them a Lease of a small portion of the said Beach suitable for the aforesaid Purpose – and as in Duty bound they shall ever pray – R. & S. Hatt” Received at the Executive Council Office on 28 Apr 1801 and read the same day. Ordered to lie over until the spot prayed for may be ascertained. Read again in Council on 7 Dec 1802. Ordered recommended that a lease be granted to the Petitioner of half an acre west of the bridge for the purpose of erecting a storehouse thereon but the Board recommends that the lessee should be restricted by proper clauses in the Lease from erecting any mill or from exercising any exclusive right of fishing on the land devised or of doing injury to the fishing there. “We the Inhabitants of the Township of Bertie in the County of Lincoln, are Destitute of a Mill, without going a great distance; as there is a Mill Seat at Point Abino in the said Township which has been granted by His Excellency the Governor Simcoe (for the benefit of the Township or County) to Timothy Skinner, and the said Skinner is transferred the same Mill Seat to Isaac Lane [sic: Laing], inhabitant for 3, 4 years or more ago, and no prospect of any preparation for a Mill yet being builded. – We will therefore be very much oblige to Your Honour – that if Your Honour thinks proper, to grant the said Mill Seat to Jacob Crane an Inhabitant, who promises to immediately commence with the building, and to have it finished as fit to go in the Course of a Year. “Humbly sheweth—That your Petitioner is one of the Sons of William Havens, late of the above named Township, deceased, who by his will (copy whereof is hereunto annexed) devised to your Petitioner the Lots No nine in the sixth Concession, and number Eight in the seventh Concession of the Township of Grantham aforesaid, containing two Hundred acres, or should there be a mistake in the number, as he was not in possession of his Deed, the lands he occupied in that Township – also fifty acres, being part of Lot number twenty two—in Clinton – The Certificates for the lands devised in the said will are now lying in the Attorney Generals Office, but have not yet passed into a Deed. Upper Canada Land Petition of Joseph Haslip (sic), James Flemming and Associates dated at York (Toronto) Aug 1796

“The petition of Joseph Haslip and James Flemming from the County of Ulster in the Kingdom of Ireland, husbandmen for themselves and Associates, Humbly Sheweth, That your petitioners, with about thirty eight others, have for some time past, had it in contemplation to remove & form a settlement in the said Province; —That they profess the Christian (Protestant) Religion and are of consequence, inoffensive, peaceable and industrious Subjects; —That in order to enjoy the advantages and conveniences of Society such as Schools and the mechanical arts, &c, they are desirous of settling themselves in a neighbourhood together—That from their attachment to the Constitution under which they have had the happiness of being born and governed, they wish in their emigration from Ireland to become Subjects of no other Government than the one to which they have belonged—That as your petitioners wish to be assigned of some certain quantity of Land for themselves and associates respectively to be located and received for them, they take the Liberty of observing that their condition and abilities to cultivate the said Lands, are such, and the distance from whence they move is so great, and the enterprise, of course, so expensive, that your petitioners humbly conceive that an allotment of Twelve hundred acres to each settler may by your Honor be deemed an equitable portion of the Crown Lands in this case to grant, and they therefore humbly pray your Honor to take the subject of this their petition into consideration, and grant a Location of Forty eight thousand acres to accommodate the said thirty eight settlers, exclusive of themselves, in such of the unappropriated Lands on the River Thames (or else where) as your petitioners upon viewing the country shall make choice of, or such other quantity as in your wisdom shall be deemed proper and equitable; and your petitioners, as in duty bound, will ever pray &c—” [Unsigned] Received at the Executive Council Office on 2 Jul 1796 and read in Council on 8 Oct 1796. “Humbly Sheweth That your Petitioner is married to Margarett Haslip widow to the deceased Saml Haslip who died at this place in the year 1789 and left a widow and three fatherless children unprovided for Your Petitioner was married to the said widow in the year 1793, and has since taken care of the Children left by her former Husband, and since married has had two more, Your Petitioner therefore Prays that his and Infant family consisting of a wife & Five Children be taken into consideration, and that your honor will be pleased to allow them such a tract of land as to your Honor may appear meet.
