He came away from his own Place as he could not stand it any longer, having been always a friend to the King. – He had assisted the King’s Troops and the Indians which the Rebels knew, and therefore were violent against him, and he had two sons then in the King’s Army. —

Says his late Brother resided in the Fall 1783 and the ensuing Winter at Carleton Island, Cataraqui or La Chine, his Business carried him to different places, his Home was at La Chine. His late Brother was a Native of Scotland, came to America in 1771, was settled near Ticonderoga when the Rebellion began, from the first he stood forward to oppose the Measures of the Rebels—joined Genl Burgoyne at Ticonderoga in 1777 – he did not go with the Army but after Burgoynes defeat came into Canada himself and Family, he could not stay any longer, as his Attachment to the British Govt was so well known

That your Petitioner, on the Ontario being lost, was ordered, with a party under his direction, to proceed to Niagara, to chose and cut Timber for building the Limnade, and has ever since remained in the Services being now Master Boat Builder in the Batteau Service at this Post…”

March 1777 He was sent with Dispatches through the wilderness to Sir William Howe in New York, on his arival in that City was made 1st Lieutenant in the Guides and Pioneers and served as a Guide to the Army in Jersey until that Province was evacuated; Embarked with the Army and on their arival at Philadelphia was appointed Chief Waggon-Master in the Provision Train.—

Decr 1779 He resigned the place of Waggon Master—

1780 Raised a Company of Loyalists and Clothed them in uniform at His own Expense, Joined Major Ward in Jersey, was thrice made Prisoner and severely treated his only Brother after served upwards of Three years as a Conductor in the Quarter Master Generals Department, was made prisoner and died after being almost a year confined in a common prison in New England.

“Humbly Sheweth That your Petitioner was formerly an Inhabitant of Sussex in the State of New Jersey, and gave great Assistance in sending into the British Lines Recruits for His Majesty’s New Raised Corps and that he at that Time Exorcised a Valuable and Lucrative Trade by which he Supported himself and a Numerous Family, and that on Account of his Attachment to the British Constitution he became Suspected and Lost his Business, and Suffered Damages by Fines and Imprisonments to the Amount of one Hundred Pounds and Upwards, besides Supporting for a considerable Time a Company of Thirty Six Men, which by his Exertions, the greater Part of them arrived safe in New York, Also he was at a great Expence and Trouble by sending into Niagaria [sic], a party of Fourteen Men by a certain Allen McDaniel who was then on the Frontiers. Also Your Petitioner has yet on hand to the Amount of One Hundred Pounds of His Majesty’s Currency and finally that he was deprived of a Comfortable Subsistance for himself and Family by their Rigid Laws passed against Loyalists…”
