On 23 Nov 1801 John Fanning wrote to Acting Surveyor General David William Smith Esquire noting he has been some time in possession of a lot of land in the township of Crowland belonging to a Mr. Darling. Fanning now had claim to lands lying in Crowland except it may be a mistake of his. Lot 10 Concession 6 and Lot 13 Concession 7 in the township of Willoughby are bordering on the town of Crowland. Fanning laid no claim to any other land in or near that township except those two lots—if these deeds are made out for Joshua Bennet for this land Fanning should be glad to know or if they can come out in his name as No. 13 stands to Jacob Boughner. Bughner (sic) has sold to Christian Hendrick and Hendrick to Bennet 10 years ago. Fanning asked information about getting the deed for Bennet. Fanning also noted Smith had the selling of Doctor Holmes land in Willoughby lying on the main road up the river to Fort Erie. Fanning wished to know the lowest terms he would take in cash for the lots. (Crowland Township Papers 0367)
