“Humbly sheweth That your Memorialist is the Son in Law of Walter Moody, whom your Honor has permitted to locate a Lot on Yonge Street – That your memorialist desires to reside near the said W. Moody, has removed his family, and exchanged or has agreed to exchange 200 acres of Land in Grimsby – for 200 Acres yet unlocated, which have been granted under order of Council, and warrant of Survey, lodged in the Surveyor General’s Office, to one Jonathan Bell of Grimsby (whose writing to the Surveyor General is herewith respectfully laid before your Honor) Your Memorialist therefore humbly prays your Honor to permit him to locate a Lot on Yonge Street in the name of, and under the authority of the unlocated warrant of Jonathan Bell – and Your Memorialist, as in duty bound will ever pray—” Abraham Mattice made his mark. “witness T Ridout Not. “The petition of Isaac Mattice of Eliz,Town County of Leeds, District of Johnstown, son of Nicholas Mattice U. E. “Respectfully Sheweth That your petitioner is from unavoidable events driven to the necessity of Selling the lot of land known by the name of Lot No 4, West Side of Yonge Street, given her by the honorable Executive Council; which She is informed that She cannot execute without your honor’s approbation; She therefore most humbly prays that your honor will take her case into consideration, and as in duty bound She will ever pray. “Humbly Sheweth That your Petitioner has drawn but 150 Acres of Land; his Father served seven years in Coll Butlers Rangers, and your Petitioner was a Minor in the American War, but now has a Wife and three Sons, his Wifes Father was in the Rangers all the War, Wherefore your Petitioner Prays a Grant of Four Hundred Acres of Land, together with the 150 Acres already drawn makes 550 Acres which he hopes your Excellency will conceive him deserving of, being the Son of a Loyalist who suffered greatly by the Revolution—your Petitioner will ever pray—[Signed] Peter May” Received in the Executive Council on 17 Jul 1795 and read on 17 Aug. Upper Canada Land Petition of William May of the Township of Grantham, late of Butlers Rangers dated at Newark (Niagara-on-the-Lake) on 19 Aug 1795

“Humbly sheweth, That your Petitioner served during the american war in the above Corps of Rangers- & afterwds settled with his Family, then consisting of a wife and five children in the Township now called Grantham; that he has since occupied the Lots No 19 & 20- 2nd Concessn 17, 18 &19 in the 3rd Concessn & 18 & 19 in the 4th Concessn of that Township & having been there settled by the authority of the Land Board – your Petitioner’s home stands in the above Lots on the plan thereof. That your Petitioner did receive Certificates for the above Lots – which he delivered into one of the public offices about two years ago – & on his application for the same a few days since, the certificates annexed could only be found and which on his producing it at the Surveyor Gens office was discovered to want the signature of the Board. “Memorandum of an Agreement made and entered into this first day of December in the Thirty fifth year of his Majesty’s Reign at Newark in the Province of Upper Canada Between Isaac Swayze of the Township of Newark Esquire and George Mains of the same place on the one part and William Chewit of the Township of [blank] in the Eastern District of the other. Whereas the said Isaac Swayze is possessed of a certificate of location of lot Number 213 and the said George Mains hath sometime since presented to the late Land Board of this District a petition for certificate of location of lot number 214 in the said Town of Newark to the granting of which there does not at present appear any objections: And whereas the said Isaac Swayze and the said George Mains are desirous of disposing of their equitable claim to the said lots for a bona fide consideration, but because of the dissolution of the Land Boards, and because there is no Council at present sitting no regular assignment can be made of one lot and a certificate obtained for the other. This Agreement witnesseth that for and in consideration of the Sum of Seventy five pounds lawful money of the Province to the said Isaac Swayze and George Mains paid by, and by them now acknowledged to be received from, the said William Chewit they have each of them Do hereby assign over to the said William Chewit his heirs & assigns, all their and each of their equitable claim and demand to the said lots and each of them. And the said Isaac Swayze and William [sic] Mains do, and each of them for himself—his heirs, Executors and assigns against all others claiming or to claim the said lots or either of them, now or hereafter they will defend and they or either of them, their or either of their heirs Executors or administrators, shall and will obtain or cause to be obtained a good sufficient and indefiable title to the said Lots, for, and in favor of the said William Chewit as soon as the same can be procured. For the true performance whereof they the said Isaac Swayze and George Mains do bind themselves, their and each of their heirs, Executors and administrators in the Sum of one Hundred and fifty pounds lawful money of this Province to be recovered by virtue of these present. “Know all Men by these presents That we Isaac Swayze of the Township of Newark in the Province of Upper Canada Esquire and George Mains of the same place Yeoman are held and firmly bound to William Chewit of the Township of [blank] in the province aforesaid Esquire in the Sum of One Hundred and fifty pounds lawful money of this province to be paid to the William Chewit or his certain attorney Executors, administrators or assigns for which payment well and truly to be made we bind ourselves and each of us by himself, our, and either of our heirs Executors and administrators firmly by these presents. Sealed with our seals Dated this first day of December in the year of our Lord one thousand Seven Hundred and ninety four and thirty fifth of his Majesty’s reign. “The Petition of Sarah McBride for and in behalf of herself and her Two Children James Reed and Hannah Reed—Humbly & Respectfully Shews That your Petitioner was the Wife of Patrick Reed a Soldier in His Majesty’s 5th Regiment, but had obtained his discharge a little time previous to his death, that the said Husband of your Petitioner had never received any part of His Majesty’s Bounty land either for himself or family; your Petitioner, therefore, humbly prays your Honor in Council will be pleased to take into consideration the true merit of her claim, and allow her such portion of land, as in your wisdom she may be deemed entitled to—And in duty bound will ever pray –” Sarah McBride made her mark. The Acting Surveyor General being present and stating that the original location is in Reed’s name and the house and improvement having been built and made by the Petitioner, who appears to have agreed with Reed with the purchase of it before his death and it also appearing that the money from the lott was applied in payment of Reed’s debts.
