The 1787 Census

of Heads of

Households

of North Niagara

The Honourable Robert Hamilton (1753-1809) was an astute businessman, politician and office holder in the early years of Upper Canada. He had property holdings throughout Niagara and served as its first census taker in 1787.

Introduction

On September 17, 1787, Robert Hamilton compiled one of the earliest listings of settlers in the Niagara Region of Upper Canada. This included the names of the heads of households and enumerated the number of their family in age categories.

The original is a listing of heads of households with categories for the number of their family members in age groups. For the purpose of alphabetizing, I have converted this to a narrative format to include the heading under which each head of household appeared. This appears below.

The original document is designated “Hamilton’s note to Quebec re Settlers” in the collection of the National Library and Archives in Ottawa, Ontario (RG 4 – A1, Volume 34, Document numbers 11001-11014).

The compiler of the enumeration, Robert Hamilton (1753-1809) held the appointment of Superintendent of the Western District and owned lands both in Niagara Township and westward on Twelve Mile Creek in Grantham Township. He was a prominent merchant in Queenston, Niagara Township, at that time located in the Nassau District of Quebec, then later designated Lincoln County, Upper Canada (present Ontario) when the province was severed from Quebec in 1792. Hamilton was appointed one of the first Justices of the Peace in 1786 and a Member of the Land Board for Nassau in 1788. At that time, Hamilton’s settlement authority encompassed the area along the south shore of Lake Ontario west of Niagara Township to the newly developing Grantham, Louth, Clinton and Grimsby Townships. Hamilton included in his Census the settlers as far west as Louth Township and those he wished to settle in Clinton and Grimsby Townships. Given this extent, the Census would have been enumerated over a period of time down to the September 17, 1787 compilation date, perhaps taking as long as several weeks.

The first section of the Census consists of three hand-written pages and applies to established settlers and newcomers living between the Niagara River covering four miles west to Four Mile Creek in Niagara Township, Lincoln County. The second section refers to settlers west of Four Mile Creek. The third section enumerates newcomers who arrived in Niagara “this season”, meaning the spring and summer of 1787. Many of the heads of households in this section became settlers in Clinton and Grimsby Townships in the western extremity of Hamilton’s authority.

Appreciation is given to Tim Seburn for sharing this important document found in the National Archives.

The Second Section

The second section of the Census has at the top the date 17 September 1787. It is headed “Return of Loyalists & disbanded troops Settled in the District of Niagara West from Mill Creek.”

This section runs from Four Mile Creek in Niagara Township westward through Grantham and Louth Townships. There are different categories from the first section: Heads of families; Men; Women; Boys above 10; Boys under 10; Girls; Land Clear; Wheat “Sowen”; Total Persons. A number of acres of cleared land is stated. For the wheat “sowen” a number of bushels is given.

The final totals for this section are: 156 Men; 77 Women; 24 Boys above 10; 58 Boys under 10; 97 Girls; Land Cleared 1288 acres; Wheat Sowen 721 “bushels”; Total Persons 410.

The Third Section

The third section of the enumeration is headed “Return of Families who have this season come into the Settlement of Niagara & who have not taken the Oaths” This reference is to the Oath of Loyalty to the Crown taken by all before being granted land in the province. Being new arrivals, the opportunity to take the oath may not yet have arisen. The Government of the province settled many of these newcomers in Clinton and Grimsby Townships.

The headings on this page are: Names; From; Age; Women; Sons; Daughrs; Servants; Horses; Cows; Characters. The Category headed “From” gives the state of origin. The “Characters” category summarizes the recommendation of the newcomer.
