The Upper Canada Land Petition of Nathan Barnum dated at Newark (Niagara-on-the-Lake on 22 Jul 1793

“That your Petitioner is a Reduced Subaltern Officer in Brigadier DeLancy’s Corps and lately came from Britain with Intention of settling in this Province, therefore prays your Excellency will please to grant him an allotment of Land according to the rank he bore in said Corps. Your Petitioner purchased in Britain, and brought with him, Farming utensils to a considerable amount all of which are now at Kingston; and being desirous of beginning to improve immediately would be glad to receive a Grant of Two Lots at Toronto viz. No. 16 in the first Concession for himself, and No. 7 in the same Concession for one of his Sons, and the remainder of the Land that he may be entitled to, he wishes to take up in some part of the province that remains unlocated, in order to bring forward his children &c. to form a settlement. When he has the pleasure of knowing your Excellencys sentiment on the matter, he will proceed in exploring the Country, and could he be Indulged in taking his lands in a body (clear of reserves) for the greater convenience of a Compact Improvement he would be thankful but submitting his Case entirely to your Excellency hopes you’ll give him such indulgence as through your Goodness may seem meet, and your Petitioner in duty bound will ever pray.” Received at the Executive Council Office on 22 Jul 1793. The Upper Canada Land Petition of Nathan Barnum dated on 22 Sep 1793

“That since your Petitioner had the Honor of consulting your Excellency relative to his Lands, he has explored the Country in the vicinity of Long Point on Lake Erie, and find that a quantity of land in that quarter is unlocated. Therefore prays your Excellency will please to grant him the allotment of Land which he may be entitled to for himself and Family as follows—Viz. 1 lot of 200 Acres on which there is an improvement & I purchased the same about Four Mile above Turkey Point; 1800 Acres on both sides the Big Creek between Turkey Point and Long Point about 10 miles on this side the latter; 900 acres for Three Sons on Pattersons Creek—land for Two Daughters adjoining the purchased Improvement first mentioned. Your Petitioner prays your Excellency will take the premises into consideration and grant him the above described Lands or such other relief as through your Goodness may seem meet, and your Petitioner in Duty bound will ber pray. “May it Please your Excellency, Nothing but the urgency of my business together with the great expence I have been at there two years in endevouring to get a Grant for such Lands as I am entitled to as a Suffering Loyalist; could induce me to take this method of Soliciting an Enterview of your Excellency. Not being able to heard by Petition in Council, which I gave in last June to Major Small, and another about Ten days ago, I flatter myself your Excellency will do me that Justice I am entitled to when you hear my Prayer. Upper Canada Land Petition of Nathan Bunnel Barnum dated at Newark (Niagara-on-the-Lake) on 27 Nov 1796

“Humbly shews—That your Petitioner has received the grant of Lot No 7—in front of the Township of Charlotteville—the front line of which Lot extends no further that the top of the Bank that his chief Improvements, consisting of a dwelling House, Barn, & part of his arable Land, are in front of said Lot under the Bank and that he originally paid ten guineas—for the improvements thereon. “In obedience to your Excellencys order of reference to us to report upon the Petition of Jack Baker—We are to state to your Excellency that the under mentioned Lands have been located in his name—viz. Lot No 36 in the 4th Concession of Beverly 200 acres under a Land Board Certificate transferred to Nathan Barnum—& the Lot No 6 in the 1st Concessn of Crowland 100 acres. Total 300 acres. The last under the authority of a warrant of Survey dated the 6 August 1796, for one Hundred acres in addition. A person by the name of John Baker M. “Respectfully shews That your Petitioner has been many years in the Province and never received any Land & that he is married to Elizabeth, Daughter of Peter McMickan—a Loyalist U. E.—That His Excellency the Lieut Governor was pleased to promise he would recommend his application for Land to the Extent of 1200 acres. “The Petition of Christina Tice widow of the late Capt Gilbert Tice & of David Badstido [sic] Nefew & heir at Law as witt by will to the said Gilbert Tice Humbly Sheweth—That Gilbert Tice by his last will sett aside a portion of his Lands for the payment of his debts some of which have been Sold to different person but cannot be legally transfered, nor the money be received for them, for want of a Deed for these Lands. —To render these transfers more easily effected, than could be done if the Deed shall issue in Gilbert Tice’s name your Petitioners most humbly request that a deed for Six hundred Acres of these Lands may be made out in the name of the Honorable Robert Hamilton One of the Administrators named in the will of the said Gilbert Tice—and that this deed be for Lotts [blank] Containing one hundred Acres each in the Township of Stamford & County of Lincoln & your Petitioners as in duty Bound will ever Pray [Signed] Christina Tice, David Bastedo” Read in the Executive Council on 23 Jun 1798. “That Your Petitioner was an Inhabitant of Pennsylvania before the late rebellion in the Colonies. That during that period he experienced all the sufferings generally enumerated in the catalogue of Loyalists and at one time was fined eight hundred pounds Pennsylvania currency. In a word everything he possessed was sacrificed to the fury of an unnatural rebellion, except his life and his integrity and Six Years since he removed with his family into this Province, and now enjoys the happiness of that Government for which was always dear to him and for which he has severely suffered. Your Memorialist begs leave to inform Your Honors that since his removal he has purchased an improvement on two hundred and fifty acres of land [words crossed out] and obtained a right to the soil, which is all the encouragement he has ever received from Government since has been in the Province. Your Petitioner agreeably to the example of others in similar circumstances Begs leave to approach Your Honors on the present Occasion and most humbly requests that Your Honors would grant him a further location for himself and family as much in your Honors in your wisdom shall see fit and as in duty bound he will ever pray. “Humbly Sheweth. That your Petitioner in the late American Rebellion was imprisoned in the Province (now State) of New Jersey and suffered the most severe persecution, was obliged to pay a Fine of £500 and upwards enclusive of Court charges and other sums to a large amount. his Grain Cattle &c taken from him, for which he never received any compensation. he was confined in Sussex Gaol in Irons, for harbouring and subsisting Captain Moody when he came out of New York, and for aiding and assisting British Soldiers to make their escapes from imprisonment. After the conclusion of Peace he embraced the earliest opportunity to explore this Province, being desirous to remove into His Majestys Dominions and on his return to Jersey, disposed of his Lands &c and removed to this place in 1788 since which time he has been indefatigable in making emprovements, suffered many inconveniences from the scarcity of Provision the first year, but by perseverance overcame these difficulties. He now begs leave to address your Excellency and hope you will please to take his sufferings into consideration, and from the Imprisonment Fines and Persecutions in General that were inflicted upon him flatters himself he will receive at your Excellencys Hands an additional allotment of Land to that already granted him, or such other relief in the Premeses as your Excellency may seem meet, and your Petitioner in duty bound will ever pray. E. who being Duly sworn on the Holy Evangelists deposeth that in the beginning of the american war he resided near to Jacob Beam (now of Clinton) adjacent to Sussex Court House in the then Province of West Jersey—that the said Jacob Beam was well known to be attached to His Majesty’s Government, that he was thereupon situated by General Skinner to raise men for his Majestys Service, and that the said Beam in Consequence thereof engaged about Twenty, and that he understood five of them got within the lines, and entered into the King’s Service—The said Mathias Boughner also deposeth, that he and the said Jacob Beam were confined at the same time and in the same Gaol, and were both fettered and the said Jacob Beam was released on paying a fine of Two Hundred Pounds New York Currency lying in Gaol three months after the fine was paid, as a further punishment” [Upper Canada Land Petitions LAC “B” Bundle 1, Petition Number 92j]

“Humbly sheweth That your Petitioner came into this Province in the spring of the year 1788 – with his family consisting of a wife & six children; that on the 27 May 1794 His Excellency the Lt Governor in Council, was pleased to grant him 600 acres of Land – and on the 15 July the same Year He received a grant of 350 acres, in the Gore of Grimsby – which your Petitioner considered as his family Lands – That having applied some time ago at the Surveyr Generals Office in order to complete the location of the aforesaid Lands, he was informed that as the order for 350 acres was not specifically mentioned as family Lands no more than 600 acres in the whole, could be located – that your Petitioner afterwards petitioned the Honbl Council for a revisal of the said grant – but which he apprehends has not come forward. Upper Canada Land Petition of Jacob Beam of Willoughby Township dated in York (Toronto) 18 Aug 1806

“The Petition of Jacob Beam of the Township of Willoughby – Farmer Humbly Sheweth That your Petitioner has been in this Province upwards of Four years, has taken the Oath of Allegiance as will appear by the Certificate annexed, and has never received any Land from the Crown. That your Petitioner is desirous to occupy and improve s vacant Lot, and is prepared and undertakes should his Petition be favourable answered to pay the whole of the Fees for the same. Wherefore your Petitioner prays your Honor may be pleased to grant him two hundred acres of the Waste Lands of the Crown under the Regulations acted upon the 6th July 1804 and your Petitioner as in duty bound will ever pray — [Signed] Jacob Beam York Augt 18th 1805” Read in the Executive Council on 19 Aug 1806 and ordered recommended for a grant of 200 acres of land. That Your Petitioner has not received any Land from the Crown and being desirous for actual Settlement Your Petitioner humbly prays Your Excellency will be pleased to grant him such portion as a Settler as Your Excellency may deem meet. “Humbly sheweth That your Petitioner is the son of Abraham Beam, of Black Creek in the above named Township – and has been in the Province several years – That your Petitioner is married and has two children – and having never received any Land, humbly prays your Honor would be pleased to grant him 200 acres, for settlement, and your Petitioner as in Duty bound will ever pray—” Martin Beam made his mark. “witness T. Upper Canada Land Petition of David Mills, John Beaman and Lebbeus Porter dated on 19 Jun 1795

“most Humbly Sheweth That your Petitioners having explored this Province from Kingston to this place by the way of York, wishes to settle in Newark: and set up as a Sadler, a Nailor and Blacksmith. They are young men Just arrived to the years of manhood and wishes to settle under the British Government. Therefore prays your Excellency will please to Grant them 200 Acres of Land each, in any unlocated part of this province; and a Town Lot each in Newark, but your Excellency Probably will permit them to settle in York this is Left to your Superior wisdom to point out for them—They pray permission to bring in their Stock as Tradesmen, as above noted according to a List which they herewith present to your Excellency. The Upper Canada Land Petition of Christopher Beamer of Louth dated at Newark (Niagara-on-the-Lake) on 8 May 1797

“Humbly shews. That your Petitioner has been upwards of Eight years in the Province and is married to Elisabeth, a Daughter of Jacob Smith a Loyalist—who having never received His Majestys Bounty to persons of her description your Petitioner humbly prays your Honor would be pleased ot grant him 200 acres in behalf of his wife, and your Petitioner in duty bound will ever pray.” Christopher Beamer made his mark witnessed by Thomas Ridout, J. P. Received at the Executive Council Office on 9 May 1797 and read in Council on 10 May 1797. Ordered the name of the petitioner’s father-in-law is not on the U. E. List. “This Certifies that the Bearer Mr John Beamer has been Settled in this place about Six Year and has a Wife and Six Children, During which time he has behaved himself as an Honest good industrious Man, he brought a Considerable of property into this province, but had the Misfortune of having an outhouse Burned Last fall, with a Great Quantity of Carpenters Tools, and other property. from information I have good Reason to believe that he has always been a good Loyalist—he has an Estate left to him in the States, by his father, who Died two years ago which by all Appearance he will bring into this Province.
