“humbly sheweth That the 10th September 1789 your Honor’s Petitioner purchased from Lot Regan, late private soldier in the 84th Regt. three Lots of land containing 100 acres each, which Lots had been assigned to said Regan by Mr Frey the then Surveyor of the District. That your Honor’s Petitioner has the honor of annexing the Surveyor’s Ticket and a Certificate signed by two members of the Land Board, & the then acting Clerk. That your Honor’s Petitioner has not as yet located the above mentioned lands, he therefore humbly prays that he may be allowed so to do, & that a Deed may issue in his name to confirm him in the same. Upper Canada Land Petition of George Reid late of Butlers Rangers dated at Newark (Niagara-on-the-Lake) on 15 Jul 1795

“Humbly sheweth- That your Petitioner has received two Hundred acres of Land which he has considerably improved, prays your Excellency will be pleased to grant him the remaining 100 acres which may be due him as a discharged soldier- He further respectfully informs Your Excellency that he has a wife, and five Children born before the year 1788, for whom he has never received any Lands, and humbly prays your Excellency will grant him 350 acres in their behalf, & that the same may be located to him in the Township of Beverly, or other vacant Lands of the Province & as in Duty bound yr Petitioner will ever pray [Signed] Geo: Reid” Received at the Executive Council Office on 17 Jul 1795. Discharge Papers of George Read [sic] dated 24 Jun 1784 attached to his Upper Canada Land Petition

“By John Butler Esqr Lieut Colonel Commandant of the Corps of Rangers—These are to Certify that the Bearer hereof George Read [sic] Private of Captain Bernard Freys Company of the aforesaid Corps hath served Honesty and Faithfully in the said Corps for the span of Four years and in Consequence of his Majestys Order for discharging the said Corps, he is hereby discharged and is Intitled by his Majestys Late order to the portion of Land Allotted to Each private soldier of this provintial Corps who wishes to become a settler in the province, he having first received all Just demands, rears of pay, Clothing, and from his Entry into said Corps to this date of his discharge as appears by the receipt on the Back hereof. Mentioned in the Upper Canada Land Petition of Abraham Phenix dated at Niagara on 10 Feb 1797

“Respectfully Shews—That your petitioner in the year 1786 left the united States of america with John Reid and his family – that your Petitioner and his family, which Consisted of a wife and three children, were obliged to return from Oswego, owing to their not having a pass which was then Customary – and notwithstanding his fair representation of the hardship he would lay under to Captn Forbes of the 34th Regt who then Commanded at that Post) by his returning to the States, was obliged to return—That your Petitioner’s wife being a Sister to the wife of John Reid and had a nephew in Colonel Butlers late Corps, – and his having come into this Province – trust your Honor would would [sic] be pleased to allow him an addition to the 200 acres he has already received he having nearly improved the same, and in circumstances to improve a larger Tract—That your petitioner can adduce proof of what he has here stated, by two or three respectable farmers well known in this Settlement for their Loyalty—therefore prays your Honor would be pleased for to allow him such further grant as to your Honor may seem meet, and your Petitioner as in duty bound will ever pray—[Signed] Abraham Phenix” Received at the Executive Council Office on 10 Feb 1797 and read in Council on 7 Mar 1797. “Humbly shews, That your Petitioner has served his Majesty a number of years in the fifth regiment of Foot and last two years since obtained an honorable discharge. Your Petitioner begs leave to inform your Honors that he is desirous of settling in this Town and prays that your Honors would grant him Lot No 143—your Petitioner has improved on said lot and has his timber in readiness for building a house—By granting the prayer of his Petition your Honors will oblige him and as in duty bound he will—[Signed] Partrick [sic] Reed” No Executive Council dates or order on the petition. Upper Canada Land Petition of Sarah McBride (Spinster) dated at York Garrison on 7 Jul 1796

“Humbly Sheweth That the late Husband of your Memorialist (Patrick Read, Private in His Majesty’s Fifth Regiment of Foot) having solicited your Excellency in Council for a Grant of Land, but dying prior to receiving such indulgence, and leaving your Memorialist with Two Children – Humbly Prays your Excellency to grant her a reasonable proportion of Land and in such place or places as your Excellency may think proper. And your Memorialist as in Duty bound will ever pray.” Sarah McBride made her mark. No Executive Council dates on the petition. Ordered referred to His Excellency. Upper Canada Land Petition of Sarah McBride dated at Newark (Niagara-on-the-Lake) on 7 May 1797

“The Petition of Sarah McBride for and in behalf of herself and her Two Children James Reed and Hannah Reed—Humbly & Respectfully Shews That your Petitioner was the Wife of Patrick Reed a Soldier in His Majesty’s 5th Regiment, but had obtained his discharge a little time previous to his death, that the said Husband of your Petitioner had never received any part of His Majesty’s Bounty land either for himself or family; your Petitioner, therefore, humbly prays your Honor in Council will be pleased to take into consideration the true merit of her claim, and allow her such portion of land, as in your wisdom she may be deemed entitled to—And in duty bound will ever pray –” Sarah McBride made her mark. Ordered 200 acres to James Reed and Hanah Reed the children of the deceased Patrick Reed a discharged soldier from the 5th Regiment serving in this Province. Mentioned in the Upper Canada Land Petition of Colin McNabb dated on 6 Jul 1799

“Humbly Sheweth—That your Petitioner in the year 1795 made a purchase of Lot No 143 in the Town of New Ark from Sarah McBride (late Sarah Reed) on which your Petitioner has made some improvements and therefore prays your honor will be pleased to direct that a Patent may Issue for the Same in your Petitioners name who’s in duty bound will ever Pray [Signed] Colin McNabb” Received at the Executive Council Office on 6 Jul 1799 and read on 29 Jul 1799. The Acting Surveyor General being present and stating that the original location is in Reed’s name and the house and improvement having been built and made by the Petitioner, who appears to have agreed with Reed with the purchase of it before his death and it also appearing that the money from the lott was applied in payment of Reed’s debts. Upper Canada Land Petition of William Read dated at Newark (Niagara-on-the-Lake] on 17 Jul 1795

“Humbly Sheweth That your Petitioner a native of Great Britain came with his Father and the Family in General to America in 1773. At the commencement of the American War, was severely persecuted and he was Two Years imprisoned. He will not trie the Patience of your excellency with a long detail of sufferings, but hope that the Loyalty of the whole Family will be a Convincing proof that they were ever unshaken in their Fredility to their King and the Constitution of G Britain. The Brother of your Petitioner who served His Majesty in Colonel Butlers Rangers has lodged a Certificate with John Small Esqr which they brot from Britain, which your Petitioner hopes your Excellency will peruse—Your Excellencys Petitioner has draw but 300 Acres of Land himself and Family and if industry has any weight in his claim to your further notice, prays Wishes that his improvement may be stated, and not only that; but with the Assistance of his Neighbours he has erected a church on his premises in which Divine Service has been performed by the Revd Mr Addison—Your Petitioner has a wife and Five children and prays you will please to give him an additional Grant of Land to Accommodate them further, or such other relief as through your wisdom may seem meet and your Petitioner will ever pray—[Signed] William Read” Received at the Executive Council Office on 17 Jul 1795. “Humbly sheweth That your Petitioner has a Family consisting of a wife and nine Children, and has received only Two Hundred acres of Land, whereon he lives—That his wife is the Daughter of Joseph Petry Who also served in the above Corps of Rangers—and has not received the Land, His Majesty has graciously been pleased to allow persons of her Description—Your Petitioner therefore humbly prays your Excellency will be pleased to grant him such a portion of the vacant Lands of the Crown, for himself and Family, as to your Excellency may seem meet, and your Petitioner as in Duty bound will ever pray—John Reilly” Received at the Executive Council Office on 20 Aug 1795 and read in Council on 20 Aug 1795. “We the Inhabitants of the Township of Bertie in the County of Lincoln, are Destitute of a Mill, without going a great distance; as there is a Mill Seat at Point Abino in the said Township which has been granted by His Excellency the Governor Simcoe (for the benefit of the Township or County) to Timothy Skinner, and the said Skinner is transferred the same Mill Seat to Isaac Lane [sic: Laing], inhabitant for 3, 4 years or more ago, and no prospect of any preparation for a Mill yet being builded. – We will therefore be very much oblige to Your Honour – that if Your Honour thinks proper, to grant the said Mill Seat to Jacob Crane an Inhabitant, who promises to immediately commence with the building, and to have it finished as fit to go in the Course of a Year. Upper Canada Land Petition of Robert Richardson dated at York (Toronto) on 15 Oct 1798

“Humbly sheweth That your Petitioner some time ago received a warrant of Survey for 1200 acres of Land – for the greater part of which, Descriptions have passed the S. Generals office, but upon inquiry at the Attorney Generals, he finds that 200 acres in Stamford, given to your Petitioner by the Honble Robt Hamilton, being the Lots No 221 & 222 – are charged to and deducted out of your Petitioners warrant – That as the aforementioned Lots were previously purchased by Mr Hamilton your Petitioner respectfully prays your Honor to allow the said 200 acres to issue in your Petitioners name – exclusive of the 1200 acres, granted to him personally by the Honble Council – and as in duty bound he will ever pray—[Signed] R Richardson” Received at the Executive Council Office on 15 Oct 1798 and read the same day.
