“The Petition of Herman Hosteter Loyalist—who served in several Capacities in his Majestys Forces during the American war—as pr his Discharge, respectfully shews, That your Petitioner came into the province about three years ago, & had a wife & Six Children & received a grant of 200 acres in the Township of York, but never located the same—& now gives up the order— That your petitioner is desirous to settle on the lands of the Crown in this Province at the Settlement of Long Point, being in a condition to cultivate and improve the same. That he has taken the usual oaths, and subscribed the declaration, that he professes the Christian Religion, and obedience to the laws, and has lived inoffensively in the country. Prays your Excellency, would be pleased to grant him at the Long point Settlem^t upon the terms and conditions expressed in your Excellency’s proclamation bearing date the 7th day of February, 1792, or such other quantity of land as to your Excellency in your wisdom may think meet. Upper Canada Land Petition of Frederick House dated at York (Toronto) on 16 Mar 1799

“The Petition of Frederick House – son of George House, late of Butlers Rangers Humbly sheweth That your Petitioner lives in Bertie & about four years ago, bought a Lot of Land in that Township, known by number thirteen in the fifth concession containing 100 Acres, from a certain John Coppas, who had received an assignment for the same and paid him the sum of Fifteen pounds Ny^k Curr^y as p the annexed agreement- That the said Coppas soon after went to the Lower Province, & enlisted in the Canadian Volunteers – And is said to have died at Montreal about two years ago – leaving no Heir or relation behind him in either Province. That your Petitioner has resided on the aforesaid Lot with his family since the year 1795 and has upwards of twenty acres cleared thereon, - that having no prospect of being ever secured in the said Lot, in the usual course of proceeding – Your Petitioner humbly begs your Honors interference and prays your Honor would be pleased to grant him the aforesaid Lot of Land in his own name – and your Petitioner as in duty bound will ever pray – [Unsigned] Received at the Executive Council Office on 16 Mar 1799 and read in Council on 22 Jun 1799. “By virtue of an Order of Survey from the Surveyor Generals Office of this Province bearing Date the 5^th Day of June 1794 and to me directed, Requiring me to Examine and Report on the existing Marks, if any, of a line said to have been Originally run and marked by a certain Allen Mcdonald Between and at the joint request of Anthony Slingerland and Hermanus House both late of the District aforesaid. I do therefore hereby Certify that I have executed the above Order in presence of the above Named Allen Mcdonald in the following manner that is to say, Beginning at a Post marked red, 20 Chains, Standing on the Garrison line and running thence bounding on the Garrison line North Seventeen Degrees West Six Chains to the Centre between a Beech Tree which has been marked on a former Occasion and a Beech Stump which Centre was Shewn to me by the said Allen Mcdonald as the beginning of the line of Division before mentioned; thence running West with an allowance of one Degree to the left for variation about Fifty Chains, and a Considerable number of marked Trees being seen by me Standing & nearly ranging in the said west line Convinces me beyond all doubt that a west line was run and marked from the said Beech Tree & Stump about Ten or eleven years ago. “Personally appeared before me Rob^t Addision Clerk, one of his Majesty’s Justices of the peace Philip House who being duly sworn deposeth, that at the time the Division Line was run between the Lots of his Father Harmonius House, and the late Anthony Slingerland, He the said Deponent was chain Bearer to Allen McDonell who survey’d it, that the said Line run thro’ part of the old premises in which the said Slingerland then lived, and as it cut off a part of Slingerland’s Improvement it was agreed between the said House & him, that he the said Slingerland should make use of the improved part as long as the said Harmonius House should live upon the Lot, and the Deponent further saith that he never heard of any other Agreement whatever between the said parties, and that he hath often heard his Father say that he sold the whole Lott entire to Captain Lotteridge. “We the Inhabitants of the Township of Bertie in the County of Lincoln, are Destitute of a Mill, without going a great distance; as there is a Mill Seat at Point Abino in the said Township which has been granted by His Excellency the Governor Simcoe (for the benefit of the Township or County) to Timothy Skinner, and the said Skinner is transferred the same Mill Seat to Isaac Lane [sic: Laing], inhabitant for 3, 4 years or more ago, and no prospect of any preparation for a Mill yet being builded. – We will therefore be very much oblige to Your Honour – that if Your Honour thinks proper, to grant the said Mill Seat to Jacob Crane an Inhabitant, who promises to immediately commence with the building, and to have it finished as fit to go in the Course of a Year. “Humbly Sheweth That your Petitioner early evinced his Loyalty by Joining his Majestys Troops at New York, shortly after their arrival at that City; he brought a number of Recruits to Col^l Emerick’s Corps at Kings Bridge; he then Joined the Loyalists under the Command of Major Barmon at Morrissinia, and when [General] Burgoyne’s Troops were removed from Boston to the Southward he went out of the Lines and bro^t a number of them (from near Fishkill) to New York and there delivered them to His Excellency Sir Henry Clinton after Major Barmon was taken Prisoner, your Petitioner Joined the Loyallists un [sic] Col^l DeLancy, and served as a Serjeant in His Corps when a Detachment of Rebels under Gen^l Pasions destroyed the [….] at Morrissinia your Petitioner was wounded and made Prisoner, his House Burned and his Family Stript of every thing, on his Return from Captivity was appointed Lieutenant in the Corps, but shortly after his appointment, at a Skirmish near the White Plains he was desperately wounded & again Captured, ~~and~~ by which wound he has lost the use of One Arm, he remained under [….] till after the British invaded New York, and previous to a perfect recovery, was thrown into Prison under their Trespass Act, and remained confined upwards of Eight months, and when released from confinement had no means left to remove himself and Family immediately. Your Petitioner saw Captain Francis in New York last summer who informed him of the encouragement held out to Loyallists in this Province by your Excellency; Therefore, as his greatest hope is built on your Goodness, Prays you will please to consider his Sufferings and grant him Lands that may in some measure compensate him for his Wounds and Long imprisonment; he has a Wife and Four Children, Three of which are Boys and two of them almost arrived to the years of Manhood. “Know all men by these Presents that I Richard Hyde, late a soldier in the Fifth Regiment of Foot did on the 10^th June 1797, sell unto William Dickson of Newark Merchant all my right, title Interest and Claim in and to thee hundred acres of land granted by His Majestys bounty, and unlocated. These are therefore to authorise the said William Dickson, to apply in my name and authority to his Majestys Executive Council, that a Deed for the said Three hundred acres in the name of said William Dickson.
