“Humbly Sheweth That your petitioner Joined his Majesty Troops Early in the year 1777 and Continued in the Service till the year 1778 when he was Sent into the Country by his officer to bring in Some other Loyalists but having the Misfortune of being Taken prisner and being kept prisnor in goal till the year 1782 Could never have the opportunity to Join his Company again and in the year 1786 your petitioner and family and his father family Moved into this province then Major Campell Commanding the 29 Regt gave the liberty of taken up Land, which your petitioner and his father have Done and soon after my father was taken Sick and Died which land now is ecupied by others and your petitioner begs leave if it may plese your Excellency to grant him a Location Elsewhere and your petitioner as in Duty Bound shall Ever pray [Signed] Isaac Horton” Received at the Executive Council Office on 29 Jun 1795 and read in Council on 11 Jul 1795. Upper Canada Land Petition of Herman Hosteter dated at Niagara on 1 May 1796 [using a pre-printed form with fill-ins]

“The Petition of Herman Hosteter Loyalist—who served in several Capacities in his Majestys Forces during the American war—as pr his Discharge, respectfully shews, That your Petitioner came into the province about three years ago, & had a wife & Six Children & received a grant of 200 acres in the Township of York, but never located the same—& now gives up the order— That your petitioner is desirous to settle on the lands of the Crown in this Province at the Settlement of Long Point, being in a condition to cultivate and improve the same. That he has taken the usual oaths, and subscribed the declaration, that he professes the Christian Religion, and obedience to the laws, and has lived inoffensively in the country. Prays your Excellency, would be pleased to grant him at the Long point Settlemt upon the terms and conditions expressed in your Excellency’s proclamation bearing date the 7th day of February, 1792, or such other quantity of land as to your Excellency in your wisdom may think meet. “The Petition of Daniel House, late of Butlers Rangers where Father & Brother were also in the same Service—Petitioner has a wife & seven children & has recd three Hundred Acres of Land in the Township of Clinton whereon he has lived upwards of Seven years & considerably improved it— Respectfully shews, That your petitioner is settled on the lands of the Crown in this Province, being in a condition to cultivate and improve the same. Upper Canada Land Petition of Frederick House dated at York (Toronto) on 16 Mar 1799

“The Petition of Frederick House – son of George House, late of Butlers Rangers Humbly sheweth That your Petitioner lives in Bertie & about four years ago, bought a Lot of Land in that Township, known by number thirteen in the fifth concession containing 100 Acres, from a certain John Coppas, who had received an assignment for the same and paid him the sum of Fifteen pounds Nyk Curry as p the annexed agreement- That the said Coppas soon after went to the Lower Province, & enlisted in the Canadian Volunteers – And is said to have died at Montreal about two years ago – leaving no Heir or relation behind him in either Province. That your Petitioner has resided on the aforesaid Lot with his family since the year 1795 and has upwards of twenty acres cleared thereon, - that having no prospect of being ever secured in the said Lot, in the usual course of proceeding – Your Petitioner humbly begs your Honors interference and prays your Honor would be pleased to grant him the aforesaid Lot of Land in his own name – and your Petitioner as in duty bound will ever pray – [Unsigned] Received at the Executive Council Office on 16 Mar 1799 and read in Council on 22 Jun 1799. “By virtue of an Order of Survey from the Surveyor Generals Office of this Province bearing Date the 5th Day of June 1794 and to me directed, Requiring me to Examine and Report on the existing Marks, if any, of a line said to have been Originally run and marked by a certain Allen Mcdonald Between and at the joint request of Anthony Slingerland and Hermanus House both late of the District aforesaid. I do therefore hereby Certify that I have executed the above Order in presence of the above Named Allen Mcdonald in the following manner that is to say, Beginning at a Post marked red, 20 Chains, Standing on the Garrison line and running thence bounding on the Garrison line North Seventeen Degrees West Six Chains to the Centre between a Beech Tree which has been marked on a former Occasion and a Beech Stump which Centre was Shewn to me by the said Allen Mcdonald as the beginning of the line of Division before mentioned; thence running West with an allowance of one Degree to the left for variation about Fifty Chains, and a Considerable number of marked Trees being seen by me Standing & nearly ranging in the said west line Convinces me beyond all doubt that a west line was run and marked from the said Beech Tree & Stump about Ten or eleven years ago. “Personally appeared before me Robt Addision Clerk, one of his Majesty’s Justices of the peace Philip House who being duly sworn deposeth, that at the time the Division Line was run between the Lots of his Father Harmonius House, and the late Anthony Slingerland, He the said Deponent was chain Bearer to Allen McDonell who survey’d it, that the said Line run thro’ part of the old premises in which the said Slingerland then lived, and as it cut off a part of Slingerland’s Improvement it was agreed between the said House & him, that he the said Slingerland should make use of the improved part as long as the said Harmonius House should live upon the Lot, and the Deponent further saith that he never heard of any other Agreement whatever between the said parties, and that he hath often heard his Father say that he sold the whole Lott entire to Captain Lotteridge. “We the Inhabitants of the Township of Bertie in the County of Lincoln, are Destitute of a Mill, without going a great distance; as there is a Mill Seat at Point Abino in the said Township which has been granted by His Excellency the Governor Simcoe (for the benefit of the Township or County) to Timothy Skinner, and the said Skinner is transferred the same Mill Seat to Isaac Lane [sic: Laing], inhabitant for 3, 4 years or more ago, and no prospect of any preparation for a Mill yet being builded. – We will therefore be very much oblige to Your Honour – that if Your Honour thinks proper, to grant the said Mill Seat to Jacob Crane an Inhabitant, who promises to immediately commence with the building, and to have it finished as fit to go in the Course of a Year. Ordered that notice be given to the Heirs or creditors of Patrick Conway deceased to bring forward their claims to the Lot occupied by him being Lot No. 13, the said Lot from the southeast angle of the Township of Willoughby – before an answer can be given to this petition. Read again on 18 May 1797. It since appearing that the Lot No. 13 herein prayed for was granted under a Land Board Certificate to Patrick Conway and since transferred under the sanction of the Board to Lewis Maby. short time after they had been Inlisted as aforesaid the said Henry Near by the orders of Said Captain Betson warned the deponant & John Near aforesaid and the rest of the Company to appear with their Army &c at Tockoconeck in the then Colony of New York to meet the Enemy who was then advancing against Livingston Manour – that in pursance of the Said Notice or warning the Deponant the Said Henry Near and the Said John Near did join their Company at Tockoconeck aforesaid under the Command of Said Captain Betson and that they were joined by Several other Company Inlisted in like manner to serve his Majesty, as they were Sworn before me at Bertie the 3d July 1816—} [Signed] J Warren J. “Humbly Sheweth That your Petitioner early evinced his Loyalty by Joining his Majestys Troops at New York, shortly after their arrival at that City; he brought a number of Recruits to Coll Emerick’s Corps at Kings Bridge; he then Joined the Loyalists under the Command of Major Barmon at Morrissinia, and when [General] Burgoyne’s Troops were removed from Boston to the Southward he went out of the Lines and brot a number of them (from near Fishkill) to New York and there delivered them to His Excellency Sir Henry Clinton after Major Barmon was taken Prisoner, your Petitioner Joined the Loyallists un [sic] Coll DeLancy, and served as a Serjeant in His Corps when a Detachment of Rebels under Genl Pasions destroyed the [….] at Morrissinia your Petitioner was wounded and made Prisoner, his House Burned and his Family Stript of every thing, on his Return from Captivity was appointed Lieutenant in the Corps, but shortly after his appointment, at a Skirmish near the White Plains he was desperately wounded & again Captured, and by which wound he has lost the use of One Arm, he remained under [….] till after the British invaded New York, and previous to a perfect recovery, was thrown into Prison under their Trespass Act, and remained confined upwards of Eight months, and when released from confinement had no means left to remove himself and Family immediately. Your Petitioner saw Captain Francis in New York last summer who informed him of the encouragement held out to Loyallists in this Province by your Excellency; Therefore, as his greatest hope is built on your Goodness, Prays you will please to consider his Sufferings and grant him Lands that may in some measure compensate him for his Wounds and Long imprisonment; he has a Wife and Four Children, Three of which are Boys and two of them almost arrived to the years of Manhood. “Humbly sheweth That your Petitioner has been settled Several years in the Province & has only received two Lots of Land, containing about 160 acres, one of them being incomplete by reason of the north Boundary line of Thorold intersecting it—prays that part of the gore between said Lot (which is in Stamford) & the Township of Newark may be granted him, to render the same complete—Your Petitioner humbly begs to represent that he has a family consisting of a family wife and Four Children—that his wife is a daughter of Mr Jacob Ball, a Loyalist U. E. and has not received any Land—prays that Lot No 23 in the 5th Concession of Gainsborough may be granted her if vacant, or other unlocated Lot—and also that your Excellency would be graciously pleased to grant an additional Quantity to himself and Children, he having made considerable improvement where he lives in Stamford—And your Petitioner as in Duty bound will ever pray—[Signed] Adam Hutt” Received at the Executive Council Office on 26 Jun 1795 and read in Council on 27 Jun 1795. “The Petition of Dorothy Hatt—Daughter of Jacob Ball of the Township of Newark, Loyalist U. E. Respectfully shews, That your Petitioner having never received any Land Prays your Excellency, would be pleased to grant her Two Hundred acres of land, as Daughter of a Loyalist U. E. “Humbly Sheweth That your petitioner Came into this province In the Month of June 1789 and the year following Brought a wife and Three children in the province but never Received any Lands But what your petitioner purchased – prays your Honor would in his Goodness please to Grant your petitioner such quantity of Land as your Honor May in his wisdom Think fit. “Humbly shews The he has served upwards of 20 years in different Regiments, principally in America & Canada, & being now discharged is desirous of setling in this Province, therefore prays your Honor to indulge him with a Grant of 200 Acres & a Town Lot in Newark, & as in Duty bound he will ever pray—” Richard Hyde made his mark. Added note of David W. Smith, Clerk of the Executive Council. “I have seen the Petitioners discharge & respectfully recommend the prayer of his petition—D W. “Know all men by these Presents that I Richard Hyde, late a soldier in the Fifth Regiment of Foot did on the 10th June 1797, sell unto William Dickson of Newark Merchant all my right, title Interest and Claim in and to thee hundred acres of land granted by His Majestys bounty, and unlocated. These are therefore to authorise the said William Dickson, to apply in my name and authority to his Majestys Executive Council, that a Deed for the said Three hundred acres in the name of said William Dickson.
