“Humbly Sheweth—That his Loyalty and unvaried attachment to His Majesty, and support of his Government through, and ever since the revolt of the American Colonies, he flatters himself can fully be made to appear to your Excellency—That he came early into the Settlement of this Province, and with unavoidable and vast expense, then erected a grist and saw mill, to the relief of the then suffering inhabitants—He further humbly represent that altho’ by then, and the few allotments by His Majesty’s bounty, he hopes his future days will be rendered comfortable, and inabl him to fulfill the important duty of a parent, in schooling five or six small children—further that he has sons capable of entering on the business of agriculture, and your petitioner humbly prays your Excellency may make him a grant of land for that purpose on the River La Tranch, such quantity as your petitioner may merit, or your Excellency in his wisdom may see fit—Your petitioner further prays to have established to him, the first lot in the broken front, in the 7th Township purchased of John Green, originally granted to Peter Hare Junr (deceasd)—The above ticket is in the hands of the Clerk of the honble Legislative Council—your petitioner as in duty bound shall pray—” [Unsigned] Read in the Executive Council on 14 Jul. Upper Canada Land Petition of the Heirs of the late Lieutenant Colonel John Butler, in behalf of Mrs. Deborah Guthrie, widow, dated at Niagara on 5 Oct 1796
“Respectfully shews—That your Petitioners are relations of the above mentioned Mrs Guthrie, whose husband was Surgeon to the late Corps of Butlers Rangers and died after the conclusion of the American war, without having received any part of His Majesty’ Bounty in Lands, granted to Officers of the Post—That the said Mrs Guthrie, has for several years past, been unfortunately deranged in her mind, so as to be incapable of supporting herself in any manner—And has been maintained hitherto, by Colo Butler & family, at Montreal with considerable Expence. That your Petitioners, desirous to colab[arate] some means for her future support, intreat your Honors consideration, upon this unfortunate woman’s situation—and your Honor would be please to grant her, or to your Petitioners, in trust for her, such Lands as may be due to her late Husband—and as in duty bound Your Petitioners will ever pray [Signed] Thos Butler, Johnson Butler, Andw Butler, J. Summary: On 29 Mar the Land Board read the petition of Deborah Guthrie for a grant of Four Hundred acres of land in the Township of No 1 in the District of Nassau and found her qualified for a grant of Four Hundred acres. The order was referred to the Acting Surveyor General who assigned to her Lots No 20, 21, 26 and 27 in the Township No 1 in the District of Nassau containing Four Hundred Acres—Forty Chains by one Hundred.
