The Channel Islands are our favorite place for whale watching! Several kinds of whales visit the area, depending upon time of year. We saw 5 humpback whales on our recent trip on the Condor Express (http://condorcruises.com/). The whales dive deep to feed, and then come to the surface to breathe. The spout is the spray of air exhaled as they surface. When diving, they first show their “humpback” fin, and then wave their tail fluke high as they go down. We saw whale flippers through the turquoise water when one huge humpback went under the boat. We also saw one humpback’s knobby head. Scientists think the knobs might be sensory organs. What spectacular animals!
