Recently we saw this unusual bromeliad plant in bloom at the UC-Santa Cruz Arboretum. Puya berteroniana is native to Chile, and is related to the pineapple. The plant produces a spectacular 10-foot-tall flower stalk only once every 30-40 years. The blooms are among the few in the world that are truly blue.
