Cable cars are a symbol for San Francisco. They are our nation's only mobile national monuments. Cable cars are famous around the world, and are so popular that they are featured on boxes of Rice-A-Roni, "The San Francisco Treat."
Recently I rode a cable car to the Cable Car Museum in San Francisco. On display were antique cable cars and equipment. There was also a viewing platform overlooking the machinery running the three cable car lines. Every summer a bell ringing contest is held for the gripmen who operate the cable cars.
