The unusual rock patterns at Pebble Beach are called "Tafoni". Tafoni forms when a harsh environment causes rocks to erode into amazing shapes. Pebble Beach Tafoni rocks are famous for their elaborate honeycomb and lacework designs. The soft sandstone is eroded by ocean waves, pebbles, and wind. We have also seen Tafoni in the redwood forest, and at Remarkable Rocks, Kangaroo Island, Australia. Florida Tafoni rocks are found in underground caves. Tafoni is even found on Mars!
