On Sunday we visited Point Bonita Lighthouse. It sits at the entrance to San Francisco Bay, north of the Golden Gate Bridge. It has been in continuous operation since 1877. The lighthouse is reached by a steep half mile trail that leads through a hand-carved tunnel of rock and over a suspension bridge. The suspension bridge mimics the style of the Golden Gate Bridge in the distance. The beautiful Fresnel lens is composed of ground glass prisms arranged in rings around the light source. Its steady white light beam can be seen up to 18 miles at sea. It is a spectacular windswept landscape of land, sea, and fog.
