On August 1, we counted 8 snowy plovers at Gazos Creek State Beach (6 unbanded and 2 banded). The Point Reyes Bird Observatory told us that the first bird below (Sylvia) was born in 2008 at Salinas River National Wildlife Refuge (60 miles south).
The second bird below (Lily) was born in May 2009 at Pajaro Spit (50 miles south). By August she had flown 150 miles south to Morro Bay State Park. Now one year later she has flown 200 miles north to her current location at Gazos Creek. Lily likes to travel, and she's very trendy in her colors too!
