Day 9 Photosynthesis, Seaweed, Seagrass, and Mangroves

 Why is the ocean blue?

Blue light has a wavelength that is the perfect size to bounce around the most and can penetrate the deepest.

Photosynthesis

Light Energy

-where does oxygen come from?

-All energy on this planet comes from the sun. Plants convert the suns energy for us to use.

Photosynthesis

 Seaweed

Seaweed is a multicellular Algae!

-Real name for seaweed is Macrophytes or macroalgae

-Seaweeds lack true leaves, stems, and roots

    Structure of seaweed

    -Thallus-the body

-Blades-The leaf like portions of the thallus

-They are not technically leaves because they do not have veins

-Do the majority of photosynthesis, but the whole seaweed is capable of photosynthesis

-Pneumatocysts-Gas filled bladders that help the seaweed stay close to the water's surface

-Stipe- Stem like support that the blades stick out of

-Holdfast-Looks like roots but is used to anchor the seaweed

Watch this video on seaweed. (Online Course instructions only)  Create a box in your sketchbook, title it "Seaweed and Kelp?" and take notes, write down the definitions and explanation in your own words and include an image in your sketchbook.

Three types of seaweed

         Green Algae (Chlorophyta)

-Most green algae are unicellular and live in freshwater. Only 10% of the species of green algae are marine. They are bright green because the green chlorophyll is not masked by other pigments. It is thought that terrestrial plants evolved from green algae

        -Brown Algae (Phaeophyta)

            -Olive green to dark brown

            -Almost all are marine

            -Largest and most complex seaweeds

-Dominate the temperate and polar coasts

-Kelp- is the largest and most complex of the brown algae.

           Red Algae (Rhodophyta)

-There are more species of red algae than green and brown combined

                -Mostly marine

Seaweed reproduction

    Alternation of generations

Kingdom Plantae

Angiosperms

    -Flowering plants

-Reproduce through the use of flowers and pollen

-Have true leaves, stems, and roots

-Have a dominant sporophyte for reproduction

Seagrasses

-Are the only true successful marine angiosperm

    -Are not real grass

    -Rhixome- Horizontal stem

Watch this video on marine plants. (Online Course instructions only) Create a box in your sketchbook, title it "Marine Plants?" and take notes, write down interesting things that you learn from the video and include an image in your sketchbook.

Story Time with Mr. Bird does not need to be in your sketchbook or notes. Simply watch and enjoy. This is a time where a share a story with you about our current topic.

  Mangroves

-Mangroves are a type of tree that grows in estuaries

-Estuaries are where freshwater from rivers meets the ocean

-Mangroves are one of the few plants that can handle salt water

-The mangrove will filter the salt out of the water and store the salt in sacrificial leaf.

-The leaf is then dropped by the tree. This gets rid of the unwanted salt

Watch this video on mangroves. (Online Course instructions only) Create a box in your sketchbook, title it "mangroves?" and take notes, write down interesting things that you learn from the video and include an image in your sketchbook. You will be quizzed on information from this video.

Now we are going to each learn about a different Marine Plant.

Homework:

Pick a Marine Plant (Must be Marine, this is Marine Biology) (You cannot choose General Seagrass or General Mangroves, must pick a species)

In your sketchbook:

-Draw or print a picture of it

-Tell us its Genus and Species name along with its common name

-Where in the world they are from

    -An animal that eats it

-and a fun fact about it

If you have trouble picking a Marine Plant then you can pick a type of Marine Algae

-Draw or print a picture of it

-Tell us its Genus and Species name along with its common name. Is it a protist?

-Where in the world they are from

-Is it salt water only or does it also grow in freshwater?

    -An animal that eats it

-and a fun fact about it

Marine Plant and Algae Sign Up Sheet For PHS Use office 365 Doc Marine Plant Sign Up Sheet (Use the species name and common name so there is no confusion as who picked what)

If it is an Algae make sure you put it under the Algae section not the plant section.

You can work with a partner. Make sure both your names are on the sign up sheet. You both need to have the information in your sketchbook. You will present together.

(You need to pay attention to your research. Do not trust only one website. If you choose something that is not a Marine Plant or Marine algae then you will receive half credit.)

All throughout next week you will go in front of the class and teach us about your plant. You should only spend a minute or two talking about your plant
