Day 2 Biology and Organization

Biology is the study of life!

Class activity: (In Classroom)

What makes something living?

Get into groups and come up with rules as to what makes something living or not. Do not worry about being wrong. These are your rules. Simply because scientists have created rules does not mean they are the best ones. Science is all about challenging things that have already been established. Maybe your rules for what makes something living are better than the rules we already have.

Next we will share with the class.

Class Activity (Online)

What makes something living?

In your notes I want you to write down some rules as to what makes something living. Do not worry about being wrong. These are your rules. Simply because scientists have created rules does not mean they are the best ones. Science is all about challenging things that have already been established. Maybe your rules for what makes something living are better than the rules we already have. After you have decided what makes something living, watch the video "Are Viruses Alive?"

Watch this video on what makes something living. Create a box in your notes, title it "what makes something living?" and take notes, write down questions you might have, and new examples you might think of. You may include any picture you like that represents the topic, including funny memes.

Teacher Demo: (In Classroom)

Is fire alive?

-It responds to stimuli

-It uses material and energy

-It grows

-Reproduces???

Lecture:

What makes something living?

-Living things are composed of cells

-Living things maintain homeostasis

-Living things respond to stimuli from their environment

-Living things acquire and use materials and energy from their environment

-Living things grow

-Living things reproduce themselves using DNA

-Living things, as a whole, have the capacity to evolve

Question:

Are Viruses alive?

Lecture:

Levels of Organization

Life is organized by levels

-Atom

-Molecule- Two or more atoms bonded together

-Cell- The smallest unit of life

-Tissue- A group of similar cells

-Organ- A group of similar cells working together

-Organ System- A group of organs working together

-Multicellular Organism- A complete living thing

-Species- Organisms that can reproduce and produce a fertile, viable, offspring

-Population- A group of the same species

-Community- All the species in an area

-Ecosystem- All the biotic (living) and abiotic (non-living) things in an area

-Biosphere- The earth

Organisms are divided through systemics and taxonomy (The process of naming things)

We use these 8 taxonomical groups to name living things.

-Domain

-Kingdom

-Phylum

-Class

-Order

-Family

-Genus

-Species

The three domains are

-Bacteria

-Archaea

-Eukarya
