Chordata Characteristics
-Nerve Chord
-Gill slits or pharyngeal gill slits
-Notochord
-Post-anal tail
-Not all Chordates have a backbone. There are two subphyla that are invertebrates
For this class we will only look at the Subphyla Vertebrata
You do not need to know about any of these animals but feel free to look them up if you are curious. These are all chordata animals that do not have a backbone.
Protochordates (Invertebrates)
Subphylum Urochordata
-Class Ascidiacea or Tunicates (Sea Squirts)
-Class Thaliacea (Salps)
Subphylum Cephalochordata
-Lancelets
Subphylum: Vertebrata
7 Classes of Vertebrates
Fish
There are 3 classes of fish. They are separated by these three characteristic.
Jawless
Cartilage Fish
Bone Fish
Amphibians
Have aquatic eggs
Have "two lives" As babies they are aquatic, as adults the live on land
Reptiles
Have land eggs
Birds
Have feathers
Mammals
Have mammary glands (Feed their babies milk)
Have fur
