Day 66 Plant Anatomy

Plant Anatomy

Vascular plants have two types of vascular tissue

-Xylem- for the movement of water

-Usually full of lignin a polymer that is strong for stability

-Phloem for the movement of sugars and amino acids

-Roots- have vascular tissue for transporting nutrition from the soil and work as an anchor

-Bryophytes do not have roots, instead they have rhizoids

Today we are going to Dissect a flower

Students are going to get into pairs

Each pair is going to bring in their own flower

In your partners you are going to dissect your flower

Lecture:

Some background info

-Remember that all flowers come form Angiosperms

-There are two types of angiosperms

-Monocots and Dicots

The word Monocot is short for Monocotyledon

-A cotyledon is a leaf that is inside the seed

-Angiosperm seeds either contain one leaf or two

-If one leaf comes out of the seed then it is a monocot

-If two leaves come out then it is a dicot

Since the students brought in their own flowers there is a possibility that there will be both monocots and dicots being dissected. It will be your job to identify your flower as either a monocot or a dicot.

Flower anatomy

Before we start our dissection lets review the anatomy of a flower
