Bromus is an invasive grass that is causing major problems in California along with the rest of the United States. There are several species.
As this invasive species spreads throughout the United States more and more research is needed to help predict its affects on the ecosystems and help with its prevention.
As a class we are going to conduct our own research on Bromus. We will collect Bromus seeds and grow them at our high school. Each group is free to hypothesize and test their own research.
Some of us will be collecting our Bromus seeds from Griffith Park. Griffith Park is local and we can learn about the local effects of an invasive plant.
There are four species of Bromus growing in Griffith Park. Three of which are invasive
Bromus madritensis ssp. rubens
and the Native Bromus
There are 374 different plant species living in Griffith Park. Many are invasive. Here you will find a list with pictures of the 374 plant species living in Griffith Park
Research:
It is your job to research Bromus. Find what the the articles have to say about invasive Bromus' affect on Southern California. As you conduct your research highlight anything that might be useful to your own research. Also make note of any questions that are not answered. Usually when conducting new research it is best to start with what has not yet been answered by previous research. This is how you will form your question. Once you have a question we will form that into a hypothesis and experiment on your Bromus seeds.
