star the Superstar, Ms. Nora Aunor, Alice Dixson, Gardo Versoza and Cesar Montano. This will also be the launching project of Artista Academy grand winners Vin Abrenica and Sophie Albert. Talented young actor Edgar Allan Guzman also joins the cast. Never Say Goodbye is slated to air on January 28 in the US on KapatidTV5 (now available on the Dish Network)
Best of the Year: 2011, it's a wrap! - The Philippine Star » Lifestyle Features » Supreme
Network of the year: TV5
A great shift began in local television when business mogul Manny V. Pangilinan bought TV5 in 2009. The network has been MVP-fied for two years, but the masses only felt the change when big stars started transferring, beginning with Dolphy, Ruffa Gutierrez, and Willie Revillame in 2010. This was soon followed by Aga Muhlach, Nora Aunor, Lorna Tolentino, and Sharon Cuneta, whose move was rumored to have cost the network over P5 billion. TV5 under MVP shook the industry, changing the game from a two-player deal to a free-for-all, threatening those who relaxed in a one-competition setup. The successful rebranding of the network has made MVP even more relevant (especially after the Digitel takeover last month), probably as relevant as the PNoy himself, but we hope TV5 won’t monopolize the entertainment industry by getting all the artists — imagine Marian Rivera and Kris Aquino ending up sharing a talk show!
TV5 enters global awards scene with Asian TV Awards win
Barely two years after it was launched as the Kapatid Network under the chairmanship of Manny V. Pangilinan, TV5 has garnered awards and outstanding recognition for its innovative shows and noteworthy talents. Not only is the country’s fastest growing network figuring more among local award-giving bodies, it is also gaining international recognition.
After being the Philippine broadcast network to receive the most number of nominations in this year’s Asian TV Awards, TV5 bagged its first Asian TV Awards trophy for Star Confessions in the awarding ceremony held recently at the Shangri-La Hotel in Singapore.
Hosted by “mother of showbiz talk” Cristy Fermin, Star Confessions (now airing as Real Confessions) won the Best Theme Song category for its official soundtrack “Ito ang Buhay Ko” (This is My Life), beating five other theme songs from Malaysia and Singapore. The song is a composition of Boy Christopher Ramos. Star Confessions production unit manager JoAnn Bañaga personally received the award for the program.
After 16 years of recognizing the best programs in Asia, the Asian TV Awards 2011 introduced the Best Theme Song category under the Technical and Creative categories, making TV5’s Star Confessions the first ever to win the trophy.
As the most competitive Philippine TV network in this year’s Asian TV Awards with a total of three nominations, TV5also competed in two other categories – Best General Entertainment category for Talentadong Pinoy and the Best Comedy Programme category for Lokomoko.
TV5 Christmas station ID “Krismas Mas Mas Masaya” gathers Philippine TV’s brightest stars to promote joy and unity this season
In a rare show of force, Philippine TV’s biggest and brightest stars—Megastar Sharon Cuneta, Comedy King Dolphy, Aga Muhlach, Alice Dixson, Edu Manzano, Joey de Leon, Vic Sotto, power couple Lucy and Richard Gomez, Ruffa Gutierrez, Ryan Agoncillo, Willie Revillame and Superstar Nora Aunor—lead TV5’s growing family to appear in its Christmas station ID to foster joy and unity among Kapatids across the country this season. Singing the “Krismas Mas Mas Masaya” jingle is TV5’s newest Kapatid, Sharon Cuneta, whose infectious cheerful energy complements the music video’s overall message.
The Christmas station ID featured the Megastar bringing the Christmas spirit straight to the doorstep of a lonely child played by Bangis lead child actor Eboy. From then on, a whole new perspective of bringing joy and sharing presents among Kapatids realizes what the essence of Christmas should really be to everyone.
Adding glitz to the all-star season station ID is this generation’s up-and-coming stars, TV5’s young brood of talents— Alex Gonzaga, Arci Munoz, Danita Paner, JC De Vera, Kean Cipriano, Nadine Samonte and Oyo Sotto with some Talent5 (TV5’s talent management and development arm) artists led by Eula Caballero and Ritz Azul.
The men and women of NEWS5 (TV5’s news and information division) bannered by its head Luchi Cruz-Valdes, anchors Cheryl Cosim, Paolo Bediones, Amelyn Veloso, Martin Andanar, Cherie Mercado, Jove Francisco, Maricel Halili, Atty. Mike Templo, and Tulfo brothers Erwin, Raffy and Ben and other NEWS5 personalities also grace the station ID to send the message of joy and unity across.
Local football superstars James and Phil Younghusband, who just recently signed up as football ambassadors of TV5’s sports block AKTV, join the station ID helmed by Raul Jorolan.
Heralding the Christmas spirit are personalities who are part of the Kapatid Network’s current roster of entertainment programs including Face to Face, Asian TV Awards-nominated Lokomoko and Talentadong Pinoy, Glamorosa, PS I Love You, Celebrity Samurai, Wil Time Bigtime, and the stars of TV5’s upcoming shows including Extreme Makeover Home Edition Philippines, Felina and Valiente.
Meanwhile, at the recently concluded Christmas party of the Kapatid Network for the members of the entertainment press, TV5 First Vice President for Entertainment Perci Intalan revealed the direction of TV5 in 2012 where big-budgeted reality programs are already being lined up, including the Philippine version of Extreme Makeover Home Edition hosted by Paolo Bediones with design team composed of Tessa Prieto-Valdes, Divine Lee, Marilyn Montenegro and Tristan Jovellana; The Biggest Game Show in the World-Asia to be hosted by Richard Gomez; Dancing Nation, Kanta Pilipinas and Temptation Island.

Pinoy Explorer pilot posts high ratings
TV5 ranks No. 1 on Sunday primetime
The Kapatid Network reigned supreme in the highly-coveted primetime block (6pm to 10pm) last Sunday (September 18) with 8.5% AMR (28.8% audience share) as compared to ABS-CBN’s 8.3% AMR (28.1% audience share) and GMA’s 7.8% AMR (26.5% audience share), data from Nielsen Media Research in Mega Manila showed. Boosted by the formidable program lineup of Comedy King Dolphy’s Pidol’s Wonderland (5:30pm), Aga Muhlach’s Pinoy Explorer (6:30pm), Bossing Vic Sotto’s Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? (7:30pm) and Ryan Agoncillo’s Talentadong Pinoy (8:30pm), TV5’s Sunday primetime block continues to raise the bar in offering shows that highlight moral values, education and Pinoy pride.
With the premiere of Pinoy Explorer, the biggest edutainment program to ever air on Philippine TV, Sunday primetime becomes even more entertaining and informative for viewers of all ages, with Aga Muhlach taking everyone to the world-renowned Wyoming Dinosaur Center in the US. The show revealed the world of dinosaurs through 3D clips from the “Clash of the Titans” series and BBC’s “Walking with Dinosaurs.”
Pinoy Explorer pilot episode posted an impressive 8.3% AMR or a total of 1,975,813 absolute viewers – 84,295 more than ABS-CBN’s TV Patrol Weekend’s 1,891,518 (7.9% AMR); and 465,543 viewers more than GMA’s 24 Oras Weekend’s 1,510,270 (6.3% AMR).
Meanwhile, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? was the most-watched program across the day (2am to 2am) with 11.1% AMR (33.6% audience share). The September 18 episode of the world’s most famous game show made history after 28-year-old Karl Jonathan Aguilar won P2 million, the first non-celebrity to win the jackpot. Often teased since his childhood because of his cleft palate, Karl buried himself in studying and reading books while growing up. This absorption of knowledge paid off as he played his game with pure smoothness, delighting host Bossing Vic Sotto to no end.
TV5’s telecast of the much-awaited Star Power: Mayweather vs. Ortiz boxing bout was also the most-watched daytime offering last Sunday both in Mega Manila and Nationwide Urban Philippines. According to Nielsen’s NUTAM data, the Floyd Mayweather vs Victor Ortiz fight posted a 10.5% AMR, outpunching the 5% AMR of ABS-CBN’s ASAP Rocks and the 4.6% AMR of GMA’s Party Pilipinas.
