Atom Araullo goes to Spain for a mouth-watering food adventure

This Sunday (November 25) on GMA Pinoy TV, Atom Araullo flies to Spain for an extraordinary and mouth-watering adventure in “The Atom Araullo Specials: iCelebremos!” The Kapuso broadcast journalist gives viewers a head start on some of the best cuisines the world has ever tasted. Not only will he reveal the mysteries of these recipes, but he will also discover secrets deeply rooted to us Filipinos.

Here in the Philippines, Filipinos boast of the world-famous lechon as the center of every celebration. But can this Spanish cuisine called cochinillo be the missing link in the local Pinoy lechon? To find out the answer, Atom visits the medieval city of Segovia and joins the chefs of the Meson de Candido where cochinillo was originally made. Atom also travels to Madrid and visits the oldest restaurant in the world, the Sobrino de Botin, where he meets a kababayan who will teach him how to make a delightful cochinillo.

Atom also goes to Valencia, the “Home of the Paella.” Valencia offers the authentic Spanish paella and its secret to an exquisite paella? It is not seafood, but rather a meat that many Filipinos may have not savored yet. Not to be missed as well are the spices that can’t be undermined, just like saffron which costs P 200,000 per kilo. Many recipes offer special techniques to make the best out of the best ingredients. This is what Toni Montoliu and Atom will practice using neither their eyes, nose, nor tongue, but with their ears!

But what is a Spanish trip without a little apprenticeship? Atom learns how to become a cortador or ham slicer in Madrid that is considered as one of the highest paying jobs in Spain. He will be mentored by no less than the first-ever Maestro Cortador Filipino. But wait there’s more, did you know that you can earn up to 2,000 euros in an event just by slicing a ham? But this isn’t just any other ham, because Jamon Iberico is known as the world’s finest ham. This Spanish gem deserves its title because a leg of this ham can go as high as P100,000!

Atom traces the food waste trail this Sunday in The Atom Araullo Specials

This Sunday (August 26), Atom Araullo traces and highlights how food is wasted from production to consumption in The Atom Araullo Specials episode “Lamang Tiyan: A Food Waste Trail”.

Around 7.3 million Filipinos considered themselves food poor, according to a recent survey of Social Weather Station. Despite this number, food wastage remains a big problem in the Philippines.

In Samar, where poverty and malnutrition are at alarming levels, Atom comes face to face with those suffering from lack of food—children who are severely wasted. There is enough food in the country for everyone, yet 296,869 metric tons of rice is wasted every year in the country, enough to feed 2 million Filipinos.

Meanwhile in Benguet, considered to be the vegetable basket of the country, Atom discovers a glaring problem: the large quantity of trimmings or vegetable waste. This reaches up to 60 tons daily and is disposed at the trading post and composting facility. According to a recent study, 45 percent of all fruits and vegetable produced are wasted.

But ever wonder where does leftover buffet food including meat, seafood, and cereals end up? The team follows the trail and discovers an alarming truth.

In Tondo, Manila, meat is recycled from trash, washed and re-cooked. Pagpag has long been seen as a terrible symptom of widespread hunger. It has also become a business in marginalized parts of Metro Manila.

As part of the global call to eliminate food waste and hunger, Rise Against Hunger Philippines established the first food bank in the country: The Good Food Grocer. Good Food Grocer partners with private companies, local government units, food manufacturers, and dining establishments to facilitate the cycle of food donation. TheFood Bank serves as a link between wastage and hunger. It offers the community nutritious produce and meals at discounted prices, and gives away what can’t be sold—a practice that reduces food waste while helping those in need.

Atom Araullo works the night shift this Sunday

Atom Araullo explores the realities, benefits, and hazards of working at night this Sunday (July 29) in “The Atom Araullo Specials: Night Shift” which will also air abroad on GMA Pinoy TV.

While most people are already winding down or getting ready for bed, the day is just about to start for some. In this documentary, Atom features some of these “night shift workers” and attempts to do their jobs as well.

Atom joins slaughterhouse workers who prepare the meat while most of the people are already asleep. He meets Oscar, a 61-year-old veteran on the job, with three decades of experience under his belt. Atom tries his hand at slicing huge chunks of meat to retail-ready portions for delivery. At the same time, he ventures into cleaning the pig’s innards with the very tough and thorough Ate Merly. As a single mom, her late nights are spent working far from home for the sake of her two children.

It is also during nighttime that laborers fix the pipes that deliver water to homes. As Atom takes on the challenge of going underground to lay new pipes, he meets 23-year-old Onyok who braves the job even with his left eye blinded by cataract. Onyok defies time by working day and night for his family in Tarlac.

As a journalist himself, Atom joins the adrenaline-filled job of a nightshift photojournalist like Vincent Go, who rushes to breaking scenes of trauma and drama, working on stories that would make the news the next day.

Atom also accompanies four children who are supposed to be asleep at night but are compelled to work due to poverty. Abandoned at an early age, they were left by their parents to fend for themselves. Atom gets personal with the kids as they pick up garbage from house to house, and trade them for money for their day-to-day living.

Join Atom on another meaningful journey and extensive discussion of today’s issues in “The Atom Araullo Specials: Night Shift”, this Sunday on GMA’s flagship international channel, GMA Pinoy TV. For the program guide, visit www.gmapinoytv.com. (30)
