Blockbuster KimXi tandem returns with Ai Ai in the wacky "Past Tense"
TFC@theMovies brings current number one Filipino comedy film to 38 theatres in the U.S. and 13 in Canada starting December 5
REDWOOD SHORES, CA, December 4, 2014 – The last time Kim Chiu and Xian Lim teamed up on the big screen under award-winning director Mae Cruz Alviar- which was just in early 2014 - their film Bride for Rent grossed over P326 million in the Philippine box office. Versatile comedienne Ai Ai de las Alas co-starred in Sisterakas, an entry of ABS-CBN Star Cinema to the 2012 Metro Manila Film Festival, which earned over P391 million. These two films are now the 7th and 4th, respectively, highest grossing films of all time in Philippine cinema history.
TFC@theMovies is giving moviegoers in North America the holiday gift of a jolly ho-ho-ho and a barrel of ha-ha-ha when it brings anew director Cruz-Alviar, the loveteam known as "KimXi" and the genius zaniness of De las Alas in a wild comedy ride of a movie called, Past Tense, to 38 theatres in the U.S. and 13 in Canada, starting this Friday, December 5.
"This is a 'feel good' time for every member of the family, a season of joy and laughter," said ABS-CBN Global Head of Theatricals John-D Lazatin. "With this winning team, viewers will find themselves rolling on the floor with the laugh-a-minute barrage of jokes, comedic characters and situations. The beauty of this is you can tell that the artists are immensely enjoying themselves in this movie and that energy is contagious. This is a true laugh trip. It's a fun way for TFC@themovies to wrap up 2014."
Can You Change The Past Without Messing It Up Further?
This fresh rom-com presents the story of Belle (De Las Alas) in 2034 who wakes up after being in a coma for 20 years. The last thing she remembers is getting into an accident while chasing after her boyfriend Carlos (Daniel Matsunaga) to apologize. She learns that Carlos died the same night that she got into an accident. Belle couldn’t believe how her life turned out.
Belle was given a chance by Papa Time (Benjie Paras) to time travel to 2014 to correct her mistakes, but as the 2034 version of herself. In doing so, she finds out things that make her decide to change the course of the past. First, she learns that Carlos is a bad guy for her after all and that her best friend Babs (Lim) is in love with her. She then decides to make her younger self (Chiu - yes, no kidding) fall in love with Babs hoping to get Carlos out of the picture and to avoid the accident.
In the process, things go out of her control, putting Belle's future life at risk of becoming even worse.
Well-known movie critic Isah V. Red wrote: "Past Tense is a film about the consequences people have to deal with, the changes they have to face, and the chances they have to give based on the many choices that have to make in their lifetimes. Past Tense features the winning combination of the country’s ace comedienne, a certified blockbuster director, and a love team that is loved and adored by millions."

TFC "GALING NG FILIPINO" MUSIC PROFILE: The Music Behind "EDSA Woolworth"featuring Summer Breeze
TFC@theMovies presents its second film offering in time for Thanksgiving; Catch EDSA Woolworth in 49 theatres in US & Canada starting this Friday, Nov 14
One of the many little things that will linger in the minds of the moviegoers when they watch TFC@theMovies' second film offering, EDSA Woolworth, is the music soundtrack. There are four Filipino American artists whose original works are featured in this precious and unique family movie for the holidays. One of them is Summer Breeze a.k.a. producer-singer-songwriter-musician Amiel Maquilan, based in South San Francisco, California, whose song, "Dressing Room (Blessed Me With You)", is a beautiful, memorable, and proudly Filipino composition that will mesmerize viewers of said movie.
Summer Breeze is a youtube sensation managed by The Luna Co. His music videos, showing acoustic soul, pop, jazz and R&B influences, have drawn over 6 million views combined on YouTube, which propelled him to travel and perform in the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, Oregon, the Midwest, Canada and the Philippines. He has shared the stage with the Bay Area's number one FilAm R&B group Legaci (who performed as back-up singers for Justin Bieber) and with international superstars, Black Eyed Peas.
On his Facebook page, it says that "his drive for music increases day by day and continually works even harder to spread his messages across the nation. He says, 'I just want to use the gift that God has given me with all my might and to inspire those who are uninspired.'"
Listen and sing along with Summer Breeze when his song, "Dressing Room (Blessed Me With You)", plays on TFC@theMovies' EDSA Woolworth, showing this Friday, November 14, in 49 theatres in US & Canada.
The song, "Dressing Room (Blessed Me With You)", is available on iTunes.
The video is on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dazA3bYgA0Q. The lyrics below:
Dressing Room (Blessed Me With You)
"The best things in life are found when you're not looking." - Amiel Maquilan
saw her smile the first time the other day
never let opportunity slip away
caught her all alone in the dressing room
told her that "i really love your hair"
then began to swoon
saw her eyes and began to stare
the whole world came to stop like no ones there
they say it's windows to the soul
pure and beautiful
what's this feeling in my heart
cupid shot a dart
doesn't take a day to recognize sunshine
give me all your trust and i'll give you all of my time
God put you in my plans today
You....
you're the reason why i smile didn't expect to come
through...
from the feeling in my heart it's a brand new start with
you....
God put you in my life and my dreams are coming
true....
i was lonely in my life so He blessed me with
you....
memories, silly things, did today
violins, guitar strings start to play
standing next to me while you smile some more
i can take you downtown we'll explore the world
city lights and Bernal Heights, she likes that
long walks and funny talks come back
feeling so complete i begin to see
that everything we do is like a movie scene
doesn't take a day to recognize sunshine
give me all your trust and i'll give you all of my time.
God put you in my plans today.

Critically acclaimed “The Trial” kicks off exciting Fall movie season for TFC@theMovies this Friday
Must-see court drama with John Lloyd Cruz, Gretchen Barretto, Richard Gomez, Enrique Gil & Jessy Mendiola screens in US and Canada starting October 24
LOS ANGELES, CA, October 23, 2014 – The reviews for ABS-CBN Star Cinema’s latest offering on its 20th year, The Trial, are in, and the verdict is a victory for Philippine cinema.
“A festival-worthy piece that may usher in a new age for mainstream Philippine cinema,” raved Julia Allende of pep.ph.
“An emotionally involving legal drama presented with sufficient flair and built around the crackerjack portrayal of John Lloyd Cruz as a 27-year-old simpleton, Ronald Jimenez Jr., accused of raping his tutor, Bessie Buenaventura (Jessy Mendiola),” praised Rito P. Asilo of Inquirer.net.
“At a time when romantic and family comedies are playing jump ball with the box-office crown, Star Cinema and director Chito Roño make a surprising gamble on a film that’s neither one nor the other… it’s a promising step towards seeing more films in the name of originality, regardless of genre,” said Zig Marasigan in his review on rappler.com.
Indeed, with a stream of record-breaking box office triumphs of romantic and family comedies and love triangles, the country’s premier film outfit braved the road less travelled with a compelling court drama that involves a complicated and odd nexus of characters and tackles the sensitive topics of rape, the mentally handicapped, gay parents, marital problems, social media abuse and the country’s justice system.
To pull this off, it takes the caliber of award-winning director Chito Roño, the story and screenplay by Ricky Lee, Kriz G. Gazmen and Enrico Santos, and the sterling cast led by John Lloyd Cruz, Gretchen Barretto, Richard Gomez, Enrique Gil, Jessy Mendiola, Sylvia Sanchez, Vivian Velez, Vincent De Jesus, Benjamin Alves, among others.
“After its opening in the Philippines, The Trial is making critics think, triggering moviegoers to talk and discuss the film, and creating buzz for film awards. They say fall is the season in North America to bring in the good stuff, the movies of serious value and content. As part of TFC’s and Star Cinema’s 20th anniversary, TFC@theMovies couldn’t have chosen a better film offering to kick off its fall movie season here with The Trial. It is simply a must-see,” said ABS-CBN Global Head of Theatricals John-D Lazatin.
A Curious Case: Flaws and Secrets The marriage of lawyer JULIAN (Richard Gomez) and developmental psychologist AMANDA (Gretchen Barretto) is already crumbling. Aggravated by the tragic death of their only son, their relationship now is beyond any chance of mending.
That chance came when one day Julian and Amanda encounter a curious case. RONALD (John Lloyd Cruz), a person with intellectual disability, is accused of raping the niece of a renowned university head, BESSY (Jessy Mendiola). The already curious case becomes more intriguing when they learn that Ronald was their son’s best buddy.
Amanda is hired by Bessy’s camp to look into Ronald to prove his lucidity and intention – hence, implicating him of the crime. However, as she tries to get to know him, the truth about Ronald and his relationship with Bessy and her deceased son all unfold before her. Believing that Ronald could have not committed the crime, she withdraws from Bessy’s camp and decides to help him.
Working together, Julian and Amanda exert every possible effort to acquit Ronald of the crime. Little do they know that his case would mean facing the truth about their broken family – something they have forever lied to themselves about.
“Memorable,” said ABS-CBN North America Managing Director Olivia De Jesus. “The Trial is a film that reels you in as a moviegoer and makes you ask what would you have done if you were one of the characters? In the end, it will make you look into yourself, your own relationships with your family and with people seen as ‘different’ by society.”

"Yung ibang teenagers like us, nakikita nila 'yung mga sarili nila sa amin. At kami, 'yung mga ginagawa namin, pang-age lang talaga namin."
With the solid support of Filipino viewers across the globe, both Kathryn and Daniel ensured that their launching movie "Must Be...Love" will be different from their past projects. Comedy Concert Queen Ai-Ai de las Alas is "UNSTOPPABLE" in Reno.
After a long absence in the US, Ai-ai De Las Alas (together with the Concert Queen of the Philippines, Pops Fernandez) will be seen LIVE on July 3rd at the Grand Theater of the Grand Sierra Resort Casino in Reno, Nevada. Aptly entitled "UNSTOPPABLE", her newest show promises non-stop laughter and pure family entertainment.
Ai-ai de las Alas has done it all. She has shaped the industry with her uncanny ability to make people laugh and different style of comedy. She has delivered when it counts. Often imitated but never duplicated – that’s how followers describe her simply.
Ai-Ai, the Comedy Queen of the Philippines has all but nothing to prove. The most recent Best Actress winner in the 37th MMFF has been the subject of limelight in all aspects of the industry. Still, she remains complacent and unmoved by any of these.
"UNSTOPPABLE,” is the initial offering of Artist Magic Entertainment and The Law Offices of Kenneth Graham (who specializes in immigration, lawyer-assisted mortgage & IRS debt representation, etc), in cooperation with the Grand Sierra Resort Casino, Little 22 Ban Quality Foods and Paradise Hills Home Care. For more info, please call Artist Magic at 925-932-0170, 925-932-0170 or visit www.grandsierraresort.com.
Incidentally, The Law Offices of Kenneth Graham is located at 1575 Treat Boulevard, Suite 105, Walnut Creek, CA 94598 Toll Free Phone (800) 368-1031.
Four childhood friends grew up together in Tondo, Manila. They were the closest of friends until life's circumstances took them out of Tondo. And in their grand reunion, however, it is not at all what you would expect from friends who once shared so many fond childhood memories.
The play won "Best Comedy" in the Palanca Awards in the Philippines in the 1970s. It's been shown all over the Philippines for a number of years because a lot of people can really relate to the characters in the play. The production have very professional actors who will portray these characters -- each one will delight the audience and have them in stitches laughing because of their antics in depicting the typical Filipino behavior with which many can identify.
