THE ACADEMY SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY COUNCIL PRESENTS "HIDDEN FIGURES/MODERN FIGURES" IN PARTNERSHIP WITH NASA
LOS ANGELES, CA – The Academy Science and Technology Council will present “Hidden Figures/Modern Figures: A Journey of Breakthroughs in Cinema and Space Travel,” in collaboration with NASA, on Wednesday, November 29, at 7:30pm at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. The evening will feature a panel discussion with NASA scientists and “Hidden Figures” filmmakers for an examination of the past, present and future in space math, diversity and the movies. Moderated by former Deluxe/EFILM Executive Beverly J. Wood, panelists include Fox 2000 president Elizabeth Gabler, Oscar®-nominated writer-director-producer Theodore Melfi, film editor Peter Teschner, cinematographer Mandy Walker, NASA chief historian Dr. Bill Barry and NASA engineers Tracy Drain, Jennifer Trosper and Powtawche Valerino.

Several of the films have not yet had their required Los Angeles and New York qualifying releases. Submitted features must fulfill the theatrical release requirements and comply with all of the category’s other qualifying rules in order to advance in the voting process. A shortlist of 15 films will be announced in December.
Films submitted in the Documentary Feature category may also qualify for Academy Awards in other categories, including Best Picture, provided they meet the requirements for those categories.
Nominations for the 90th Academy Awards will be announced on Tuesday, January 23, 2018.
The 90th Oscars® will be held on Sunday, March 4, 2018, at the Dolby Theatre® at Hollywood & Highland Center® in Hollywood, and will be televised live on the ABC Television Network. The Oscars also will be televised live in more than 225 countries and territories worldwide.

OSCARS NOMINATIONS ANNOUNCEMENT

To help guide this year’s nominees through the 33 days between the nominations announcement and the Oscars ceremony, the Academy invited 11 Oscar-winning and nominated Academy members to share personal anecdotes about their Oscars experience and offer advice to the new class of nominees about this life-changing moment.
Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs will be joined by Demian Bichir, Dustin Lance Black, Glenn Close, Guillermo del Toro, Marcia Gay Harden, Terrence Howard, Jennifer Hudson, Brie Larson, Jason Reitman, Gabourey Sidibe and Ken Watanabe. These talented artists and filmmakers were filmed in six different cities around the globe—Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Toronto, London and Tokyo.
The pre-taped video footage will be edited together with voiceover and graphics announcing the nominations in all 24 award categories. In keeping with tradition, PwC will deliver the Oscars Nominations list to the Academy this evening, January 23.
