Actress Angel Locsin was declared as “Icon of the Year” at the “Us Girls August Awards” held Aug. 19 at (coincidentally) ICON Bar in Makati. She’s the second to receive the honor after KC Concepcion, who was hailed “Icon” in 2009.

In the VTR that was shown before Angel went onstage to accept her award, the hosts of the Studio 23 long-running lifestyle show—Iya Villania, Angel Aquino and Cheska Garcia-Kramer—described the 25-year old star as an overall achiever; she who is an actress, commercial model, designer, producer, advocate, businesswoman, sports enthusiast, and philanthropist all rolled in one.

Among Angel’s notable achievements include her nomination at the 2009 International Emmy Awards, her advocacy for women as part of Gabriela, and her efforts as ambassadress of the Philippine National Red Cross.

Aside from the multiple thank you’s she mouthed during her acceptance speech, Angel hopes that “sa mga mumunti kong nagawa ay may mga ma-inspire ako.”

The hosts said the “Icon” award is the only honor which was not opened for public voting. It was them (Iya, Angel, and Cheska), the staff and the management who deliberated the long list of nominees.

Angel’s fellow Kapamilya stars also won in the other categories, such as primetime princesses Erich Gonzales and Andi Eigenmann (“Faces of the Year” – Teens) and Kim Chiu and Kristine Hermosa (20’s bracket). The hosts revealed that this category generated the most number of votes from the public.

Meanwhile, Anne Curtis, Mai Kaufman, Georgina Wilson, Kelly Misa, and Iza Calzado were declared as the “Most Fashionable” women of the year.

The event also recognized the people behind the celebrities’ glam looks. Angela Alarcon, Alyanna Martinez and Kat Cruz were named Stylists of the Year, while Mickey See, Lourd Ramos, and Claire Diokno were declared Make-up Artists of the Year.

In between the announcement of awards, Sam Concepcion, Nikki Gil, Kris Lawrence, and “Pilipinas Got Talent” grand finalist Velasco Brothers entertained the guests with their respective performances.

Spotted at the event are the young sisters Megan and Lauren, Bubbles Paraiso (whom Angel said did her make-up), Kristine’s fiancé Oyo Boy Sotto and Cheska’s husband Doug Kramer.
