The Flavors & Feels of the Holidays take Centerstage this Saturday at the TIKIM Filipino Food Fun Run
LOS ANGELES, December 13, 2018 – During this holiday season, the TIKIM Filipino Food Fun Run in Los Angeles highlights the fuzzy feels and the festive flavors of Christmas. Open to all ages, gender and races, ABS-CBN International’s TFC presents another platform for Filipino cuisine to shine in. TIKIM is a Filipino word that means “to taste” and with Filipino taste stations at every kilometer of this 5K fun run, and a picnic and entertainment past the finish line, there is a lot to savor for every member of the family.
A great selection of food trucks and restaurants like Silog, Nova’s Grill, Paella! Paella!, Ateh’s Pinoy Pusion, Heavenly Ice Cream, White Rabbit, NutriAsia, McCormick, and Limelight Cateringwill be participating. There will also be fun and nostalgic games that will bring back childhood memories.
A solid line-up of performances will be provided by Jeserey Sanchez, Matt Almodiel, Rozen, Crismat Mateo, and The Catalyst with hosts Tisha Alyn Abrea, Farina Aguinaldo, and Jessica Lesaca.
One of the best things is that by registering and joining the TIKIM fun run, each adult participant would have provided meals for 10 malnourished children in the Philippines because part of the proceeds from the registration is donated to the feeding program of Bantay Bata (Child Watch), a pillar program of ABS-CBN Foundation International.

Daly City Mayor Juslyn Manalo presents the Mayor’s Business of the Year award to TFC. Receiving the plaque is ABS-CBN Global Head of Corporate Affairs & PR Nerissa Fernandez.
TFC named Business of the Year by Daly City
DALY CITY, Calif., December 10, 2018 --- At the historic installation of newly-elected City Councilmembers at the City Council Chambers of Daly City’s Civic Center, TFC was named Mayor’s Business of the Year. According to Mayor Juslyn Manalo, TFC provides entertainment and offers shows that reflect the Filipino culture and values. But more than that, Manalo adds that “it’s really through the work they’ve done for the community. For the past two years they’ve partnered with the city of Daly City to do the Filipino American History Month celebration and it’s wonderful to partner with a business that cares about the community. We see a long-term partnership with The Filipino Channel and it’s an honor to present this award to them.”
ABS-CBN Global Head of Corporate Affairs & PR Nerissa Fernandez accepted the award on behalf of Global COO Olivia De Jesus and North and Latin America Managing Director Jun Del Rosario. In her speech, Fernandez quoted the late Chairman Emeritus Don Eugenio Lopez, Jr when he was asked if ABS-CBN is about values first or service first? “ABS-CBN is about values first because values comprise the soul of service.” She added that “Daly City provided us a business environment wherein we could freely put into practice our cherished corporate values.”
In attendance at the ceremonies were California State Senator Scott Wiener andAssemblymember Philip Ting of the California Legislature, both of whom also presented TFC with Certificates of Recognition.
Fernandez underlined the significance of being named Mayor’s Business of the Year in Daly City, the largest city in San Mateo County, saying it “is an impactful recognition for ABS-CBN and TFC. But we shouldn’t wear it over our shoulders like a mantle of ‘we achieved this and that.’ What this award affirms is the importance of corporate citizenship. Our business is not removed from the living, breathing community it operates in. What we do or not do in and with the community matters. As newly inducted Daly City Councilman Rod Daus-Magbual said, ‘My father taught me to look at Daly City as my garden. If you take care of the plants, the plants will take care of you.’”
Other attendees of the Special Meeting of the City Council were Congresswoman Jackie Spier, San Mateo County Supervisor David Canepa, former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown. Other awards given out by the city are the Citizen of the Year, Commissioner of the Year, and Youth of the Year.

Much awaited May-December Filipino drama, “Glorious”, to premiere internationally and exclusively on TFC Online on November 17
SAN FRANCISCO, CA, November 16, 2018 - At a time when Mother Nature’s weather schizophrenia around the world is causing destructive winter ice storms, major snow events, hazardous air quality due to wildfires, massive rainfall or extreme heat depending on where you are right now on earth, there is always the security and comfort of just staying indoors.
And while indoors, TFC Online (TFC.tv) is offering on November 17, Saturday, the much talked about and much awaited steamy, gripping May-December drama, “Glorious”. TFC Online is the official online platform of ABS-CBN’s The Filipino Channel (TFC) and the largest, most complete and up-to-date source of high quality free and premium subscription-based Filipino content outside the Philippines.
“Glorious”, an original movie produced by Dreamscape Digital for streaming exclusively inside the Philippines via iWant, ABS-CBN’s new content-on-demand digital app, and in most countries outside the Philippines via TFC Online, stars Angel Aquino and Tony Labrusca playing their most daring roles to date. The trailer that featured a wild, lusty kiss between a middle-aged woman and a twentysomething man immediately caught the imagination and piqued the interest of millions of netizens. Memes abound on social media, as its full trailer has earned 6 million views on its launch day and more than 17 million views as of this writing.
But much more than the viral trailer’s steamy scenes that enticed and thrilled netizens, it has also spurred conversations online about age gap in relationships and the stigma attached to them.
Written and directed by Concepcion Macatuno, “Glorious” tells the story of Glory (Aquino), a 52-year-old brain tumor survivor who falls in love with Niko (Labrusca), a guy 30 years her junior.
Aquino and Labrusca both share a background in fashion modelling. Through the years, Aquino has acquired an impressive acting portfolio on TV and film, even nabbing acting nominations from the prestigious FAMAS and Gawad Urian award-giving bodies in the Philippines. Labrusca who was born in Houston, Texas, grew up in Los Angeles, migrated to Canada then moved to the Philippines just a few years ago, first got the attention of the nation in 2016 via two McDonalds’ TV ads before appearing in the ABS-CBN reality show, “Pinoy Boyband Superstar”.
Today, they’re the hottest Filipino reel couple in showbiz.
Catch “Glorious” only on TFC Online internationally on November 17, streaming at 4pm, Manila time.

KABILAAN: Palomo + Carrion art exhibit is memorable and meaningful for Filipino American History Month
SAN FRANCISCO, October 29, 2018 --- There is a huge painting that depicts the image of Philippine National Hero Jose Rizal, that recalls one of his famous quotes, “Whoever does not love the language of his birth is lower than a beast and a foul smelling fish.”
In another corner of the space, one is met head-on with the ubiquitous balikbayan box(repatriate box), a corrugated box containing items sent by overseas Filipinos. It also symbolizes the generosity of the overseas Filipino and their love for, and strong ties to, family back in the motherland. This image resonated with many gallery visitors as they claim that “This is the story of our lives.”
These are just some of the paintings on exhibit at KABILAAN (From Both Sides): Palomo + Carrion, a collaborative painting exhibition by Anthony Palomo and Mike Carrion, curated for Filipino American History Month. KABILAAN depicts the Philippine Diaspora: the life, aspirations, and dreams of Filipino immigrants in the U.S., including those still in the motherland who may be seeking greener pastures in America.
KABILAAN is also a thoughtful homage honoring the forefathers and those who came before, recognizing their great sacrifice to pave the way for those who arrived years later. The times may be different, changes may be in place, but for many kababayans (fellowmen), it is a continuing struggle to find and preserve oneself in today’s world.
At KABILAAN’s opening night, Philippine Consul General to San Francisco Henry Bensurto, Jr. expressed that “we are blessed to be given one month to celebrate Filipino American History Month and honor the legacies of our ancestors who have paved the way for us here in America.” Bensurto added that “the two words that best describe the underlying messages in the paintings of Anthony and Mike are meaningful and memorable. These two words are very relevant in the experiences of today’s Filipino diaspora, not just in the US, but the entire world.”
Palomo shared that preparing for the exhibit inspired them to “Gather our creative juices into telling our personal and individual stories and to translate them into paintings that embody our highest aspirations as Filipinos.”
Odette Keeley, board trustee at Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy remarked that “It is a visually stunning, inspiring exhibit of Filipino-American painters.” Sonia Delen, senior vice president at Bank of America Merrill Lynch shared how she loves art that represents our culture, and these paintings show that. ABS-CBN Managing Director for North and Latin America Jun del Rosario was struck at how one painting reflected how “You can live in today and still be proud of your heritage and identity.”
Carrion was overwhelmed at the public’s reception at opening night. “I never expected a lot of people to relate and find images that were very relevant to their experience as immigrants: from connecting with families back home through social media, to the simple joys of sending boxes filled with necessities to loved ones back home.”
KABILAAN was conceived from a simple conversation between friends. As Palomo andCarrion shared current experiences coming from both sides of the Pacific Ocean, this led to the desire to pass and preserve the Filipino heritage through their art.
President of the San Francisco League of Consular Corps Mariza Bensurto shared that she was moved with the art on display at the exhibit. “I feel that more people should come and see it. What a blessing for the community,” she added.
KABILAAN: Palomo + Carrion runs until November 9 at the Kalayaan Hall of thePhilippine Consulate on 447 Sutter Street.

The Essential Truths of “ASAP Live in Sydney”
“The Filipino community in Australia is passionate about maintaining its unique cultural identity, language and tradition, alongside a common commitment to Australia and the state of New South Wales. I commend everyone who made tonight’s concert a reality.” – New South wales premier, Gladys Berejiklian, in a video message to “ASAP Live in Sydney” audience
SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA, October 29, 2018 – To the new world order that believes that social media is the best place to look into to analyze engagement with content, then the recently concluded “ASAP Live in Sydney” is a runaway winner. All one needs to do is type those very words on YouTube, Instagram, Twitter and Facebook and user-generated posts collectively amounting to millions of views and tens of thousands of shares come popping out.
To those who don’t bother with social media, a simple photo of what transpired at ICC Sydney Theatre on October 20, 2018 speaks volumes:
But “ASAP Live in Sydney” -- made possible by fans, sponsors and partners who believe in the longest-running Filipino weekend variety TV show and global live concert tour of ABS-CBN, and its current international flagship channel, TFC -- is so much more than just a numbers game.
“ASAP Live in Sydney” – in the same way that “ASAP Live” was in Singapore, Dubai, Los Angeles, London, New York, Toronto and Honolulu – is a creative and artistic expression and manifestation of a strong Filipino identity and transnational cultural unity.
It’s about Filipinos without borders, gathering to celebrate a common place of origin or roots while celebrating where they presently are. And in a world-class spectacle of song, dance, talk and multimedia, performers and audience happily tell themselves about themselves: it’s Filipinos telling Filipinos about Filipinos outside of the Philippines.
CHEMISTRY AT THE PRESS CON
For instance, the press conference held on October 18 also at ICC Sydney Theatre was virtually a group of Filipino and Fil-Australian strangers bound together only by the fact that they are either members or viewers of “ASAP Live”. But it turned out to be a respectful, loving, animated, funny, learning and intimate interaction of close to 200 people in a room. Add to that thousands more via Facebook livestream.

RECOGNITION FROM LEADERS IN AUSTRALIA
Then on concert day came recognition from government officials from or based in Australia. Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, in a message sent to ABS-CBN Australia, offered his best wishes to everyone who attended the event and praised the “more than 250,000 Filipinos than have made Australia home”.

Philippine Consul General Maria Teresa Taguiang in Sydney, in her message, said: “Bringing a Filipino musical production of such great magnitude to Australian shores integrates well with the narrative of overseas Filipinos and even Filipino-Australians in this country. It is a story that affirms that wherever the Filipino goes -- that wherever the Filipino builds a community -- the Filipino will always contribute to the dynamism and vibrancy of their adopted homelands.”
WORLD-CLASS ENTERTAINMENT
The creative minds of ASAP Live Business Unit Head Joyce Liquicia and her team produced back-to-back concerts in one show that integrated the Filipino in the blended cultural universes of the Philippines and Australia. Opening the first concert with the Walangari Karintawarra and Diramuaboriginal dance and didgeridoo music of the host country then segueing to Bamboo and Daniel Padilla, with the G-Force dancers, singing, “Hoy, Pinoy Ako (Hey, I’m Filipino)” from Bamboo’s classic hit, “NoyPi” was a testament to staying uniquely Filipino even while living in and embracing a new land. It was a theme that would weave throughout the evening.

Then as a trademark of “ASAP Live” shows, there was a stream of exuberant and intricate pop song and dance numbers that represented energy, positivity and fun with a touch of both modern and nostalgic.

There are showstoppers that included ASAP mainstays with the following special guests that elevated even further the overall artistry of the show: Yassi Pressman, Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach, Paulo Avelino, Cristine Reyes, Ariel Rivera, Randy Santiago, 2014 The X-Factor Australia winner Marlisa Punzalan and Ms. Regine Velasquez-Alcasid who had announced her transfer to the ABS-CBN Kapamilya network prior to flying to “ASAP Live in Sydney”.

“It amazes me that ‘ASAP Live’ continues to grow, evolve and win new audiences thousands of miles across the globe. It remains relevant to today’s Filipino diasporans living in multicultural societies. We in ABS-CBN Australia are very thankful for the opportunity via ‘ASAP Live in Sydney’ to collaborate with the entire ABS-CBN and TFC teams and partners to bring this huge, bright light of Filipino pride to thousands here in Australia who welcomed the show with open arms. According to the project info, the contemporary artists will develop a community-led design initiative to create a site-specific installation and socially engaged programming around basketball courts in the two locations. This project plans to work simultaneously across two basketball courts in Bataan, Philippines and Woolloomooloo, Australia by creating site-specific installations and using integrated programming accessible to the local communities. The sculptural form of the work will be adapted to each site, led by consultation and collaboration with each local community. The architectural installation will operate as a place-making platform in order to activate the basketball court and surrounding environment and offer a gathering point for community and visitors.
The project aims to celebrate the local and the global “neighbourhood” around the shared and social experience of basketball. The project will provide a unique opportunity to connect Bataan and Woolloomooloo basketball and youth communities by facilitating the sharing of experiences through livestream diaries and via social media platforms. TFC Live’s TIKIM Fun Run Goes to the “Big Guava” on November 17
Historic Philippine Enrichment Complex in Tampa, Florida plays host to 3rd leg of the touring TIKIM Fun Run this year
TAMPA, FL, October 8, 2018 - The month of November in the U.S. is usually associated with the Thanksgiving tradition that marks the start of the Christmas holiday season for many. But while others bring out and parade their fall or winter fashion and gear that month, just know that the average weather temperature in Tampa, Florida in November is still somewhere between the 70s and 80s. So, the weather outside may be frightful in other states, but Tampa outdoors remain delightful.
Thus, TFC Live made sure people have a warm place to go in the usual brrr months of the year by taking its TIKIM Filipino Fun Run to the Philippine Enrichment Complex in Tampa, Florida on November 17, 2018, Saturday, starting at 10:00am.
This is the third installment of the TIKIM Filipino Fun Run this year, kicking off last Mother’s Day at the Coyote Point Recreation Area in San Mateo, California, then followed by another last September 22 at the Earl Bales Park in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. This original, one-of-a-kind 5k fun run (or walk) that celebrates Filipino culture and the value of giving back is fast becoming a touring event juggernaut that is drawing hundreds of multicultural participants of all ages. Its main attractions other that the run itself? It takes the runners through a course with a unique Filipino food tasting station at each kilometer and part of the proceeds of the registration is donated to the feeding program of Bantay Bata (Child Watch), a pillar program of ABS-CBN Foundation International.
“Doing TIKIM Fun Run in November couldn’t have been timelier because it’s Thanksgiving season,” said ABS-CBN Global Head of Events Ricky Resurreccion. “Thanksgiving is about being grateful for blessings like your family, so celebrate by running as a family at this event. Then as you do so, while running and enjoying Filipino food and culture with others, you are automatically giving to others by helping malnourished children in the Philippines with nutritious meals. That’s because three dollars out of each adult registration go to the feeding program of Bantay Bata. You feel good about everything with this event.”
Part of every TIKIM story is also the selection of the venue. Why Tampa? There is a certain quiet but delightful quirkiness to the city. Tampa, as a word, may have meant “sticks of fire” in the language of the Calusa, Native American tribe that once lived south of today’s Tampa Bay. It could have referred to the fantastic lightning display in its skies during summer. But if New York is the “Big Apple”, Tampa is the “Big Guava” ironically because of a businessman’s failed quest for wild guava tree plantations in the city back in the 1800s that actually led to Tampa being tried out for cigar production instead. Tampa turned into the “Cigar Capital of the World” and Tampa folks always say, “we owe it to the guava”. Related to cigars (or Cuban influences in Florida), the Cuban sandwich recipe that you devour in most restaurants in the U.S. most likely originated also from Tampa.
Moreover, Tampa is quite a creative and imaginative place for fun runs. Throughout the year, they hold races like the Tampa Beer Run, Tampa Bay Whiskey Run 10k and 5k, the Tampa Bay Tequila Half Marathon, and in neighboring cities, they have the Labor Day Apple Pie Run, Glam Run 5k, Boo Run and Boo Dash, Reindeer Run, Chase the Dreidel 5k, the Santa Claus Run for Scholarship, Ice Cream 5k and Jingle Bell Jog.
In short, the Tampa area is a fun runner’s paradise!
TFC Live partners this year with the non-profit Philippine Cultural Foundation, Inc. to hold TIKIM Fun Run in Tampa at the historic Philippine Cultural Enrichment Complex at 14301 Nine Eagles Drive, Tampa, FL 33626. Helping out also is TFC community partner Fil-Am Movement International which holds annually the Fiesta Mo Sa Florida in Kissimmee.

Variety Magazine features exciting new show on its October TV news round-up;
Show to premiere on Myx TV, TFC and Lifestyle Network in October and on Metro in November
NEW YORK, NY, October 2, 2018 - What happens when you bring 5 beauty pageant hopefuls to live in a mansion for 6 weeks with 2 over-the-top coaches and a team of fashion and media specialists? The People’s Queen, the glamorous new reality show that is taking the pageant world by storm, becomes available globally starting October.
The People’s Queen is being called a cross between Queer Eye for the Straight Guy and America’s Next Top Model. The show follows Cecilio Asuncion and Voltaire Tayag as they challenge five of the top Filipino pageant hopefuls in their quests for international titles.
Cecilio and Voltaire are not simply shaping the perfect beauty queen; they’re creating The People’s Queen.
“The pageant community is looking to redefine its role in an era of female empowerment and gender equality,” Asuncion explains. His history with the pageant system extends to before he was even born. His grandmother was Miss Manila. Today, Asuncion is the Director of Slay Model Management, the world’s first all-Transgender model agency and National Director of Miss Supranational USA. He judged the Miss Universe 2017 pageant in Las Vegas and hosted this year’s Miss Teen USA pageant in Shreveport, Louisiana.
“In today’s pageants, the real competition is an internal one,” he continues. “It used to be that women reshaped themselves to fit the crown, striving to match the idealized version of a Barbie doll beauty queen. Today’s judges want to see the real, unfiltered woman beneath the lashes and beautiful gowns.”
“In order to triumph, pageant contestants are required to dig deep within their souls, confront unresolved personal issues and overcome self-doubt,” says Tayag, another pageant veteran. He was a fashion designer before turning his passion and expertise into becoming a pageant journalist and trainer. A stickler for traditional training techniques, Tayag often butts heads with Asuncion and his less conventional training methods.
Variety, Hollywood’s bible in entertainment, included ABS-CBN’s “The People’s Queen” in its October TV news round-up.
The five pageant hopefuls in The People’s Queen are Nikita, a biracial beauty confronting her bullied past; 25 year-old Katrina, who spent years focusing on the needs of her immigrant family and may have missed her chance for an international crown; 15 year-old Jenny, a pageant newbie who may be too rough around the edges; overly shy Michelle who must break out of her shell if she hopes to compete at the Miss Philippines pageant; and Katarina, a runner-up on Asia’s Next Top Model and former Miss Intercontinental Philippines who is now vying for the Miss World Philippines crown.
“American audiences are craving multiculturalism in their televised programming and are especially interested in seeing more Asian representation,” says ABS-CBN Global COO Olivia De Jesus. She points to the successes of ABC-TV’s Fresh Off the Boat and the Warner Brothers Pictures’ film, Crazy Rich Asians.
De Jesus is an executive producer on The People’s Queen along with Jun Del Rosario, John Lazatin and Glenn Meehan, whose previous executive producer credits include the long-running TLC reality series, Little People, Big World.
Meehan agrees that Americans are eager to learn more about Asia’s rich culture, as long as it is a genuine representation. “Pageantry is a huge part of Filipino culture,” he says. “It is regarded as a sport and their passion for it demonstrates the quiet, resolute yet ultra-competitive nature of its people.”
Asuncion adds that the trend toward diversity isn’t exclusive to Hollywood. He sees it taking over pageants too as they are actively promoting varied shapes, heights and backgrounds in competition. “The upcoming Miss Universe 2018 pageant will even feature its first Transgender contestant, Miss Spain, competing for the crown,” he says.
“Pageant queens were never born, they’ve always been made,” Asuncion contends. “Where we used to build a queen with external make-overs, it’s internal transformations that win titles today. It’s simply not enough to be a beauty queen anymore. Pageant hopefuls must strive to be The People’s Queen.”
The People’s Queen is ABS-CBN International’s first foray into a reality show in English with an all-Asian American cast beyond its Myx TV channel. ABS-CBN is the largest Filipino media and entertainment company in the world. In the USA, its programming is available on Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Bright House Networks, Cox Cable and other major cable systems, as well as on satellite via DIRECTV, on IPTV and digitally via TFC online (TFC.tv) which is also available on Roku.
The People’s Queen will be seen globally on Myx TV (Myxtv.com) starting October 24; on TFC on cable, satellite, TFC online (TFC.tv) and Lifestyle Network on October 27 in North America, Europe and Middle East (October 28 in Japan, Papua New Guinea and Australia); and on Metro channel in the Philippines in November.

Filipino American contributions
take front and center during Filipino American History Month in October
DALY CITY, Calif., September 17, 2018 --- October is celebrated as Filipino American History Month across the U.S. because the earliest documented Filipino presence in the U.S. was on October 18, 1587 in Morro Bay, California.
It was the late Dr. Fred Cordova and his wife, Dr. Dorothy Laigo Cordova, founder of the Filipino American National Historical Society (FAHNS), a community-based organization whose mission is “to promote understanding, education, enlightenment, appreciation, and enrichment through the identification, gathering, preservation, and dissemination of the history and culture of Filipino Americans in the United States,” who first introduced October as Filipino American History Month back in 1992.
In 2009, the United States Congress had passed subsequent resolutions recognizing October as Filipino American History Month, urging people across the U.S. to celebrate the significant contributions of Filipino Americans to the enrichment of the country.
TFC takes part in four celebratory events during the meaningful month of October.
On October 6, Saturday, the City of Carson will have the kick-off ceremonies for their 9th Annual Filipino American History Month festivities. The day starts at 8:00 am by the Dr. Jose P. Rizal Monument outside the Carson Community Center on 801 E. Carson St. in Carson, California. This will be followed by a wreath-laying ceremony, and a program that highlights their leadership awards in three categories: Community Leadership, Youth Achievement, and Heroism.
Headliners for the program are singers Fe de los Reyes and Miguel Vera. Other performers are the CSU Long Beach Filipino American Coalition, Shane Selloria, Jason Farol, Kindreds of Carson, and former “Fil-Ams Got Talent” champions Charishma Marquez, Shekinah Austria, and Therese Masangcay. Keynote speaker is Asian Pacific Studies Professor Dr. Mary Talusan-Lacanlale. Consul General Adelio Angelito Cruz and Councilmember Elito Santarina will also grace the kick-off.
Daly City celebrates Filipino-American History Month via Kasayahan sa Daly City at the Marchbank Park from 11:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. There will be food trucks, a family fun zone, arts and crafts, a jump house, a beer garden, several vendor booths, a bubble machine, and entertainment from homegrown talent. Parking is free at the DC Station Garage on 2001 Junipero Serra Boulevard, and Marchbank Park is accessible on the second floor. This is a free event, and everyone is invited.
Entertainment throughout the day will be provided by Melvinsings! Maddie B, Kariktan Dance Company, American Center of Philippine Arts, Rudy Kalma, Mike Dayao, Guji, and more.
Headliners to perform at the TFC Hour are “Queen of Freestyle” Jocelyn Enriquez and rapper and spoken word artist Ruby Ibarra.

Toronto is all abuzz with its first TIKIM Filipino Food Fun Run this September
TORONTO, September 6, 2018 – TIKIM Filipino Food Fun, a one-of-a-kind 5K fun run or walk that celebrates Filipino culture and the value of giving back, is headed to Toronto on September 22, 2018 at the Earl Bales Park.
TIKIM is a Filipino word that means “to taste” and the 5k fun run, presented by TFC Live, in coordination with the Philippine Independence Day Council (PIDC) of Toronto, is set to take runners through a course with a Filipino food tasting station at each kilometer of the way. Each station is a celebration of different Filipino flavors.
At the end of the run is a food fair and tasting experience. This provides a great opportunity for family and friends to get together after a unique and energetic run, and to spend time together in a picnic setting against the lush and scenic views of Earl Bales Park. The park features a dogs off-leash area, playgrounds, a sensory garden, splash pad, an outdoor amphitheatre, memorials, paved walking/cycling trails, picnic sites and fire pits.
ABS-CBN Global Events Head Ricky Resurreccion says that “After the successful launch of TIKIM in the SF Bay Area, we’re very excited to bring the TIKIM experience to Toronto.” Resurreccion further explains that since “Toronto is gifted with a rich tapestry of various ethnicities, we think the uniqueness and the fun elements of our event will appeal to this market.”
The inaugural TIKIM Filipino Food Fun Run took off last May in sunny California, with nearly 600 registered runners. A fresh concept to join the roster of various themed-runs around the country, TIKIM gained ground among Filipino-American and non-Filipino runners alike. Even newbies or non-runners joined in on the fun.
ABS-CBN Managing Director for North and Latin America Jun del Rosario said that “This is a good proof of concept that the community can come together and do an activity that is relevant – it pits part of our culture which is food, out there in the market.” Del Rosario added that he was very pleased with the turnout. “It was within the expected level. I’m a lot happier that I’m seeing a lot more of the younger people. Beyond the turnout, it’s how the younger generation has embraced this. That for me is more important.”
Run for Food while Doing Good.
Aside from being a fun run, TIKIM is also a philanthropic event. Part of the proceeds of TIKIM Filipino Food Fun Run registration will benefit World Vision, a global Christian humanitarian organization that partners with children, families, and their communities to reach their full potential by tackling the causes of poverty and injustice.
Participation in TIKIM will help support programs that will help children and their families improve nutrition and transform their communities. Projects also include working with government health departments to improve access to basic healthcare, malnutrition interventions, vaccinations and medical clinics.
The TIKIM Filipino Food Fun Run is open to all races, gender and ages. Categories are Adult Runners and Youth Runners.
Runners will receive a commemorative TIKIM t-shirt, race bib, an acknowledgement letter with the runner’s donation to World Vision, and food fair access. Running Room, Ltd is the exclusive running retail sponsor of TIKIM in Toronto.

TFC Helps Celebrate Filipino Culture at the 25thPistahan Parade and Festival in Downtown San Francisco!
SAN FRANCISCO, August 17, 2018 – It was a great weekend to celebrate culture.
TFC took part in the 25th Pistahan Parade and Festival presented by the Filipino American Arts Exposition (FAAE), a nonprofit organization that contributes to the artistic and cultural pride of the Filipino American community through the promotion of Filipino American art, music, film, cuisine and dance.
Billed as the largest celebration of Filipino Americans in the U.S., the two-day event was brimming with fun, music, performances, and food, with seven pavilions for exploration, discovery and learning: Dance, Art, Innovation, Culinary,
Health, Sports, and Leadership, plus the main stage where various performers showed off great skills in singing, DJing, rapping, martial arts, scratching, folk dancing, and many more.
FAAE President Al Perez explained the reason behind this year’s Pistahan theme: “Celebrating our History and Creating our Legacy” is because “we want to respect all the struggles and the challenges that the people who came before us went through, that opened doors for us now.” Perez also added that “We say ‘creating our legacy’ because we want us to be actively taking part in what’s going to happen in the next 25 years, the next 100 years.”
The first day kicked-off with a parade that started at the Civic Center and proceeded along Market Street with the end destination at the Yerba Buena Gardens. The TFC float had special Kapamilya guest performers Martin Nievera and Darren Espanto waving at the crowd on the streets. Balitang America’s Henni Espinosa and Steve Angeles also joined the TFC float that played music from the various summer campaigns of ABS-CBN over the years.
The TFC Hour, emceed by Adobo Nation Host Ginger Conejero and Barangay USA’s Gelo, was the climax to the two-day event, where Nievera and Espanto enchanted the huge crowd with the Concert King’s timeless songs, and Darren’s ballads, alternating with upbeat songs and a game round of the Katchi® Dance-off with Gelo, Conejero, and Darren’s baby sister.
With the favorable weather, performers and audiences alike enjoyed the great energy and engagement that one could feel from those on stage and on the grounds.
Perez shared that “The partnership of Pistahan with TFC and ABS-CBN has been the turning point for Pistahan. The caliber of the show became bigger, and that also forced us, as organizers, to be better prepared. TFC has put in place a certain level of organization, so we had to step up to the plate. From then on, the festival kept growing.”
Managing Director of ABS-CBN North and Latin America Jun Del Rosario says that “This partnership between TFC and the FAAE plays a big role in bringing together the Filipino American community and showcasing our unique culture in the Bay Area and perhaps even beyond Northern California. This kind of representation is a source of pride for Filipino Americans across all generations. We look forward to sustaining this wonderful partnership that continues to evolve with the times.”
HAPPY 5th! ABS-CBN TFC love team Lizquen’s (Enrique Gil and Liza Soberano) celebrate their perfect moments on their 5th anniversary as an onscreen, and now officially off-screen, couple. (Samsung Philippines Facebook)
MANILA, PHILIPPINES, July 23, 2018 – The year 2018 has been marked with key milestones both in the professional and personal lives of ABS-CBN The Filipino Channel (TFC) stars Enrique Gil and Liza Soberano, known globally together as the loveteam, LizQuen.
Last January, the pair went on a holiday to Europe, visiting London, Paris and Madrid, among other major cities. Enrique has introduced Liza to his family in Spain who welcomed her with open arms.
In March, not only did the pair celebrate their 5th anniversary as an on-screen couple; they also officially confirmed what millions of LizQuen fans already fantasized: that they are “exclusively” dating in real life. This was met with loud cheers and applause at the press conference that month for their ABS-CBN fantaserye, “Bagani”.
And speaking of “Bagani”, LizQuen continues to ride high as a loveteam with this daily series which has registered consistently high ratings. The July 19 national ratings from Kantar Media Philippines showed “Bagani” ranking third with ratings of 27.6% -- only ABS-CBN’s phenomenal “FPJ’s Ang Probinsiyano” and flagship news program, “TV Patrol”, ranked higher.
This even though “Bagani” is not in the comfort zone genre of LizQuen which is the rom-com. “Bagani” is a stunt-laced, action-packed fantasy drama inspired by Filipino pre-colonial mythology. It has warriors, hunters and tribes in a war between the defenders of the land called Sansinukob under the benevolent god Apo and the monsters that the evil god Sarimaw has unleashed to conquer the land and its people. It is a visual delight with the swordfights, intrigues, sacrifice, manipulation, and yes, romance between the LizQuen’s characters, Lakas (which means “strength” in Filipino) and Ganda (which means “beauty”).
From their beginnings in the now classic rom-com series, “Forevermore”, to their huge international box-office hit, “My Ex and Whys”, to their current hit, “Bagani”, the journey of LizQuen has been one memorable and beautiful moment after another.
Cheers and here’s to more years with this beloved international Filipino loveteam!
“ASAP Honolulu” gets huge aloha from thousands of fans
Catch the second episode on July 22 on ABS-CBN TFC worldwide
HONOLULU, HI, July 9, 2018 – The touring Filipino TV and live concert musical variety juggernaut called, “ASAP”, received the warmest aloha from thousands of local residents and travelling fans in the island of Oahu, Hawaii where “ASAP Honolulu” was recently held. From arrival till departure, the energetic cast shared hundreds of selfies, shakas, hugs, and high fives with the vibrant Filipino community which is the largest Asian group in the state.
It was a lovefest between the stars and the fans during the VTR shoots, at the press conference which registered the highest views for livestreamed press conferences on TFC online, at the TFC Marketplace where exciting booth activities took place, and during the back-to-back concerts at Neil S. Blaisdell Arena which reverberated with shrieks of delight from attendees.
In a report from ABS-CBN TFC’s daily news show, BA, ABS-CBN Global Head of Events Ricky Resurreccion said, “It’s important to bring joy to the Filipinos in Hawaii. This day is a full day of activities dedicated to them. As early as 10am, we opened the doors for all the activities that happened in the TFC Marketplace. ‘ASAP’ is an international TFC Live event so it always aims to celebrate the TFC experience with the entire family.”
“Hawaii is a very important piece of TFC’s history. It was in Hawaii where TFC first got carried into a cable system. If it wasn’t for Hawaii, TFC wouldn’t have had its start,” said ABS-CBN North and Latin America Managing Director Jun del Rosario.
Martin Nievera, TFC’s first Goodwill Ambassador who grew up in Hawaii, recalled the very first TFC concert in Hawaii that he starred in with Agot Isidro back in 1997. “There’s a lot of firsts for TFC that happened in Hawaii, so to return here with ‘ASAP’ – the biggest touring Filipino live concert – is a very sweet homecoming. The love is genuine. Our team’s eagerness to reach out to all and give our best is as heartfelt as it gets.”
The four-hour spectacle for the senses directed by the eminent Johnny Manahan that regaled the live audience at Neil S. Blaisdell Arena is better seen and heard. The first episode of “ASAP Honolulu” was aired on ABS-CBN TFC last July 8. Catch the second episode on July 22 only on TFC worldwide.
Meanwhile, here are some exciting sights and moments captured from “ASAP Honolulu” (Photo credits: Sthanlee Mirador for Star Studio; Nerissa Fernandez for ABS-CBN/TFC):
Kindness Radiated All Around at the 2nd TFC Unity Cup Gala and Awards Night
SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., August 13, 2017 --- You know the saying, “Throw kindness around like confetti?” That is exactly how it felt like during the TFC Unity Cup Gala and Awards Night recently held at the South San Francisco Convention Center.
Around 300 people – community leaders, golfers, donors and friends came out to support the fundraiser for the children of Bantay Bata (Child Watch), a child rescue program under the ABS-CBN Foundation.
ABS-CBN Chairman Emeritus Gabby Lopez was pleased with the incredible show of support from the community and partners. He expressed that “The Bantay Bata kids really thank the Filipino-Americans for the outpouring of support that they’ve shown us. We can see the Filipino American in America has really come of maturity. There’s a lot more of them now than there used to be, and there are a lot of them that are very successful, and they’re looking for a way to give back to the motherland.”
It was an incredible evening of dinner, raffles, awards, and a show headlined by the Philippines’ Concert King Martin Nievera. Adobo Nation’s Ginger Conejero and Global Business Unit Head for TFC.tv/TFC Online Enrique Olives, who was also lead for the golf tournament hosted the awards portion, with Lee Robin Salazar joining Conejero for the main show.
ABS-CBN Foundation International Managing Director Jerry Bennett says that “For the 2nd TFC Unity Cup, we hope to raise $150 thousand and break it down to $50k for scholarship for 23 senior high school students; $50k for life-saving medical assistance for kids who have serious illnesses; and another $50k for the four-month feeding program of 833 kids. That’s money that will go to the children who need help.”
Bantay Bata is now celebrating its 21st year of existence, and with the funds raised they hope to dramatically improve the lives of hundreds of children.
Celebrating the Champions
Winners of the inaugural TFC Unity Cup Golf Tournament were also awarded at the gala.
Global Business Unit Head for TFC.tv/TFC Online Enrique Olives, who was also lead for the golf tournament, shared that strategy for this year’s tourney was to go for quality and not quantity. “Green Hills is limited to a field of 110 players. Hopefully next year we can hold it in a 36-hole course and have 250 players and they’re out for a good cause and we can raise even more funds for the ABS-CBN Foundation,” said Olives.
Father-and-son team, Renato and Michael Fortaleza, won in the Best-Dressed category for the second year in a row. Their yellow shirts were purchased in the Philippines when they travelled on the PAL ticket won at last year’s raffle. The shirt design honors Michael’s mother’s side who is Igorot, and it was made by Easter Weaving in Baguio, in the northern region of the Philippines.
Renato jokes that since they are not likely to win at playing golf, they might as well arrive as the best-dressed.
Impressive Performances from Talented Entertainers
Aside from the awarding ceremony, there were performances from local Bay Area performing group Noriel Adricula, Janelle Feraro, and the Bantay Bata Voices. Adricula himself is an ABS-CBN Foundation International community ambassador for the Bay Area. He says that his favorite advocacy is Bantay Bata,“it is a cliché, but the children are the hope of the world and they deserve better treatment than what they are getting.”
Adricula started Bantay Bata Voices, a church-based children’s choir who shares their gift of music trough worship and by performing in benefit concerts for Bantay Bata.
Ellona Santiago, from “The X-Factor” show also wowed the audience with her show-stopping front-act performance.
Throughout the evening, the Foundation expressed its gratitude and appreciation to their generous donors by awarding them certificates of recognition.
Donors included Philippine Airlines, Jollibee, Megaworld, Unilever, Pass-It-Forward, Seafood City, Alphagraphics, Insperity, Remitly, South Main Rejuvenation Center, Martin Purefoods, the Law Offices of Michael Gurfinkel, Financial Rescue, Goldilocks, Jazzy France, Flowers & Events by Dani, South San Francisco Conference Center, Noriel Adricula, Maribeth Lalongisip, and Chris Grande.
The headliner of the evening, Philippine Concert King Martin Nievera, gave a delightful performance to the gala attendees. Nievera regaled the audience with his beloved songs and took time to go to the crowd and oblige them with some selfies and sing-alongs.
Nievera is a long-time believer and supporter of the Foundation. He shares that, “I believe in all of the ABS-CBN Foundation advocacies. I’m very passionate about them like Bantay Bata (Child Watch) and Sagip Kapamilya (Save the Family). Wherever there’s a need, I think we artists have a responsibility to be ready and willing when the call comes. I’m proud to help draw and encourage people to give.”
Hope for the Children
The gala proved to be a very inspiring evening for the organizers and the attendees.
Susan Afan, Managing Director of Lingkod Kapamilya Foundation, recounted that
“Gina Lopez started Bantay Bata 21 years ago. It started with a young boy, Jessie, who she found living in a box. Since that time, the Foundation has transformed the lives of thousands of children who were helped by Bantay Bata, that is now on its 21st year.”
They have Bantay Edukasyon scholars like John Paul Moreno, who recently graduated from the University of the Philippines, despite their unfortunate circumstances where his parents never even imagined they could afford an education for their son. Moreno was able to realize his dream through the Foundation’s kindhearted donors.
ABS-CBN Foundation Chairman Raffy Lopez also narrates the story of Cristel Nicolas. “She was rescued and provided scholarships through Bantay Bata since second grade. Cristel is now 25 years old and is a registered nurse who serves at a local hospital in the Philippines. She is able to pay forward to others the good deed that she received from Bantay Bata.”
The evening’s merry festivities were matched by the generous deluge of additional on-the-spot cash donations and pledges that raised the amount collected that evening. Bennet proudly shared that “We raised more than 200K for both the golf and gala events.”
Lopez said, “Good begets good, and that’s what all of you are doing here tonight. I join the hearts, minds and the souls of all our children whose names you probably don’t even know, but whose lives you’ve touched and changed for the better. From our hearts, thank you to all of you.”
On its 5th year, Filipino loveteam LizQuen continues to soar

This annual celebration is Carson’s biggest event so we want only the best for the community. That is why I thank TFC for bringing two of their best talents, Sam and Jona, to Carson.”
Jona and Sam enjoyed themselves as they performed for the SoCal community. Both artists went down from the stage and joined the crowd on the ground, as they continued singing, wanting to be with, and reach out up close to the lively audience.
It is endearing to see how the ABS-CBN/TFC artists connect with the festival participants. PIDF Trustee and City Council Deputy Riezl Locsin-Pe Benito noticed that “they (Sam and Jona) are both sincere in their intention to bring happiness to the community as expressed in their interactions toward the audience. The hosts, Anna and Steve, were great too, in addition to the fact that the community knows them already.”
Cainglet said that, “people from Santa Barbara (70 miles away) and San Diego (90 miles away) drove all the way to see them perform. Several dignitaries, namely state and city officials, who were non-Filipinos, stayed on to watch and be entertained.”He also added that “Sam and Jona gave world-class quality entertainment. The organizers felt so right and blessed to get TFC for this year’s celebration.”
Santarina echoes the sentiment when he revealed that “the attendance this year broke all records. This has the biggest turn out so far. In fact, Carson has been the talk of the town since Saturday. The community now looks forward to next year’s celebration.”
Jona, Sam, and ABS-CBN/TFC were presented with Certificates of Congressional Recognition by Congresswoman Nanette Diaz Barragan (California’s 44th District) Commendation and Plaques of Appreciation, and plaques of appreciation from the City of Carson.
After the Carson event, Jona and Sam proceeded to the Hilton Hotel in Universal City to appear at the dinner gala event of Kalayaan Incorporated of Southern California at the Hilton Hotel in Universal City, celebrating the 120th anniversary of Philippine Independence.
TFC Bags Back-to-Back Wins at the 2018 Regional EMMY® Awards
SAN FRANCISCO, June 5, 2018 – TFC nabs two awards at the 47th Annual Northern California EMMY® Awards held recently at the SF Jazz Center.
TFC bested KTVU Fox 2, KRCB in Sonoma County, and Hawaii News Now (KGMB) when “Box City,” an original Balitang America documentary, won in the Public/ Current/ Community Affairs – Program/Special – English category. The documentary tells the story of homeless Filipinos, who built their small homes made of cardboard and plywood, living in an encampment they call Box City.
Box City was produced by the same team behind the EMMY® award-winning documentary “The Filipino Champions of SOMA,”that won the regional EMMY® for the same category five years ago: Overall In-Charge of Production Olivia De Jesus and John Lazatin; Producer, Writer and Host Henni Espinosa; Director of Photography Jeremiah Ysip; Editor Jon Santos; and Graphics Artist Mike Carrion. Patrick Luna was asked on board to provide drone shots and additional video.
BA’s Assignment Editor and Senior Correspondent Henni Espinosa won as On-Camera Talent – Program Host in the English category for her work in Box City.
At the red-carpet interview with NBC Bay Area’s Kevin Wing, Espinosa shared that, “When we first went into the encampment filled with homeless Filipinos, we didn’t know what to expect. My cameraman, Jeremiah, told me ‘you need to get in there. These are people with stories who don’t want to be judged; they just want to share why they’re in that situation.’”
Espinosa added “What’s even more meaningful beyond the awards and accolades is that people actually reached out to help these homeless Filipinos after Box City aired. They gave food, donations, and clothing. For us, that’s what’s more important. It has become a movement.”

“Bitter Melon” – a Cinematografo Original – makes its way to Outfest this July
LOS ANGELES, June 27, 2018 --- When the very first Cinematografo International Film Festival (CIFF) launched in November last year, it also introduced select originals and new projects that their committee has carefully selected to fund and support. One of these is Bitter Melon.
Bitter Melon is the third feature film that filmmaker H.P. Mendoza directed (Fruit Fly, I Am a Ghost). It is the story of a Filipino-American family who reunites for a Christmas party, only to find out that Troy, the second oldest child, has been ruling the house with fear-intimidating everyone who lives there-including his mother, and even physically abusing his wife. What starts as a fun holiday reunion turns into a darkly humorous crime scene as Declan, the youngest son, leads the family as they conspire on how to best murder the violent and abusive Troy.
After the movie’s world premiere at the CAAMFest 36 in May, where Mendoza has premiered all his other earlier movies, Bitter Melon will be screened at the Outfest, one of the premier LGBTQ film festivals in the world. Outfest runs from July 12-22in various theaters around the city. Bitter Melon is one of the featured narratives to be shown on July 13, Friday at Harmony Gold.
In an interview with the weekly magazine show, Adobo Nation, Mendoza shared that the film is about domestic abuse and the system of violence that repeats itself every generation. Bitter Melon tackles “what would happen if someone said something, or even better, if someone did something.”
According to Mendoza, Bitter Melon has been in the works for two decades now, starting with a script he wrote in 1997. He admits that he was a different person in 1997. “As I got older, I realized I was being wacky because that made it safe. It was a dark comedy, but it was a wacky, dark comedy. And it really is no laughing matter because it touches all of us in whatever shape or form.”
Why Bitter Melon? Mendoza had said that if he ever made a film about a dysfunctional family, he would name it after the bane of his childhood existence.“Me and my brothers would hate it every time our mother would cook bitter melon. She would say, ‘I know it’s hard to swallow, but it’s good for you.’” That is how he would describe the movie. “The situations in the movie are hard to swallow, but you have to watch it and talk about it.”
Bitter Melon stars Jon Norman Schneider as Declan, Brian Rivera as Moe,Patrick Epino as Troy, Josephine De Jesus as Prisca, L.A. Renigen as Tiya, andTheresa Navarro as Shelly.
Outfest is an LGBTQ-oriented film showcase and festival in Los Angeles. For more festival information, go to www.outfest.org. For more information about the Cinematografo Original, go to http://bittermelonfilm.com/.
TIKIM Filipino Food Fun Run’s Celebrity Runners Reveal their Training Tips and Food Cravings
DALY CITY, Calif., May 9, 2018 – This Mother’s Day, TFC Live brings you two essentials: food and fun combined in a one-of-a-kind 5K run or walk that celebrates culture and the value of giving back in the inaugural TIKIM Filipino Food Fun Run. Aside from the delectable delights awaiting runners at each kilometer mark, participants will be joined by Filipino celebrities, who are runners themselves. Joining the hundreds of runners at the starting line are actress/singer/host Kim Chiu, actor/model Jake Cuenca, actor/singer Inigo Pascual, and Star Patrol Anchor Gretchen Fullido.
All four celebrities are joining TIKIM to support TFC and because the run will benefit many children via the feeding program of ABS-CBN Foundation International’s Bantay Bata (Child Watch). “I’m really excited to spend time with our fellowmen, and because I’m running for something bigger than myself,” Fullido shares. Cuenca adds that “Aside from getting a good workout, we also get to help the children. You get to have fun while doing something good.”
Pascual looks forward to having his mother with him on this trip. “I’m going to force my mom to do it (TIKIM Run) so that can be her exercise too. The cool thing about this is we get to eat at every kilometer, so in a way, Mommy and I get to bond together on Mother’s Day.” Chiu happily discloses that aside from the joy she feels when she is aroundkababayans (fellow Filipinos), she is curious about TIKIM and would like to experience the run that combines food, fun, and giving. “Tikim-tikim habang tumatakbo every kilometer so I think it’s going to be fun.” (You get tiny tastes of various Filipino food as you hit every kilometer…)
How TIKIM’s Celebrity Runners Prepare for a Run
According to Chiu, “I sleep early because my body needs to be conditioned on race day.”She also loads up on carbs the day before, “para hindi ka mahimatay and sugar is also important para hindi ka mahimatay pag mainit yung run.” (… that way, you don’t faint, and sugar is also important so you don’t faint if it’s hot during the run.)
Cuenca says that “Everyone who follows me on Instagram knows that running is really my hobby so whether that’s a 5k or 21k or even 42k I’ll always enjoy a good run.” Since all the races he has joined were held in the Philippines, he looks forward to running in the U.S.
Fullido makes sure she is prepared physically and mentally. She shares that “I never towed the starting line unprepared because I know it can be painful if I don’t put in the necessary mileage. I also make sure that I get the proper nutrition ahead of the race so I can perform my best.”
Pascual already runs constantly with his father, Filipino film and TV actor Piolo Pascual, but the younger Pascual says that he will “run more and I’m going to prepare my taste buds for the food that they have prepared for us.”
What the Celebrity Runners are Craving, Hoping to Taste at TIKIM
The fact that TIKIM combines Filipino food with a fun run has a lot of the participants looking forward to the tasting stations at every kilometer mark, and to the food festival that awaits all at the end of the trail.
TIKIM’s celebrity runners have their own hankering for Filipino eats and treats and they share their cuisine obsessions here. Fullido has so many favorite Filipino dishes, but her top three all-time favorites are lumpiang shanghai, kaldereta and crispy pata. “I hope they serve these so I can feast on my favorites while running in TIKIM,” Fullido adds.
For Pascual, tapsilog and kinilaw are among his favorites. Tapsilog is when one combines tapa (beef strips), garlic-fried rice (sinangag), and fried egg (itlog) into one meal, usually served as breakfast fare. Kinilaw (literally "eaten raw") is a raw seafood dish like ceviche.
Both Chiu and Cuenca are looking forward to kakanin. Kakanin refers to various Filipino delicacies that are usually made of glutinous rice, cooked slowly, and blended with coconut milk. Chiu enthuses that “kuchinta, palitaw, pichi pichi yan mga favorite ko!” Cuenca is now a pesco-vegetarian and can no longer enjoy his once-upon-a-time meat-based favorites. He reveals that “when i was still eating meat, my favorites were sinigang and sisig, but now that i am vegetarian i don’t get to eat that but on that day, I’ll eat fish.”

ABS-CBN elects Gabby Lopez as chairman emeritus,
Mark Lopez as new chairman
MANILA, PHILIPPINES, April 19, 2018 - ABS-CBN Corporation’s Board of Directors elected Eugenio “Gabby” Lopez III as chairman emeritus at the company’s organizational meeting which was held today (April 19). In the same meeting, Martin “Mark” Lopez was elected chairman of the Board. Mark succeeds Gabby as chairman of the ABS-CBN Board of Directors as part of the company’s succession planning process.
Gabby, who turned 65 last August and is the second chairman emeritus in the company’s history, will remain as a director of the Board. His father Eugenio Lopez Jr. – fondly known as Kapitan Geny – was given the same title after Gabby was elected chairman in 1997.
“As every athlete knows, there comes a time when inevitably it’s time to let go of the reins and allow others to take over. My father has always said ‘broadcasting’ is for the young. After all, today’s digital world is vastly different from the world I managed,” Gabby said in his speech after the ABS-CBN annual stockholders’ meeting. He also said that he “will not disappear into the woodwork.”
Gabby, who also served as CEO of ABS-CBN from 1997 to 2012, is credited with steadily transforming ABS-CBN from being the country’s biggest broadcasting network into being the country’s leading media and entertainment company. Under his helm, ABS-CBN diversified into various successful ventures that include interactive and online media, international and domestic cable and satellite channels, broadband services, sports programming, consumer products and licensing, digital TV, and immersive experiences.
It was also under his leadership that ABS-CBN launched cable TV service SkyCable, global subscription channel The Filipino Channel, and video-on-demand streaming sites TFC.tv and iWant TV. He also pursued the launch of ABS-CBN TVplus, the country’s first-ever digital terrestrial television product.
“I accept this huge responsibility of carrying on the company’s vision of being in the service of the Filipino – using the blueprint of excellence and innovation set by Gabby. ABS-CBN has played an instrumental role in nation-building in the past 65 years. We understand what the company means to the Filipino and this country, and we will take this to heart as we guide the company through its digital transformation,” said Mark, who was identified as a successor as early as five years ago.
In his previous role as chief technology officer, Mark was responsible for setting the company’s strategic directions and ensuring operational excellence in information and communications, as well as technology broadcast engineering. He spearheaded ABS-CBN’s system modernization, highlighted by the migration to the cloud and the automation of content creation and delivery to various media platforms. He was also responsible for ABS-CBN’s migration to HD and the completion of the digital terrestrial television (DTT) infrastructure.
Prior to joining ABS-CBN, Mark spent 13 years at MERALCO, the largest power distribution company in the country, where he eventually assumed the role of vice president and chief information officer and concurrent to his role as CIO, he also served as the president of e-Meralco Ventures, Inc. until 2010.
Mark completed INSEAD’s general management program in 2017, received his Executive Masters in Business Administration degree from the Asian Institute of Management in 2003, and earned his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Menlo College, California in 1994. (ABS-CBN Corporation)

Filipino Food Spice Up ABS-CBN TFC’s
First TIKIM Food Fest & Fun Run on May 13
Special Mother’s Day 5k Fun Run with exciting Filipino food festival to be held
at Coyote Point Recreation Area in San Mateo; Event to benefit Bantay Bata
DALY CITY, CA, March 19, 2018 - Just last week, The New York Times ran a story with the headline, “Filipino Food Finds a Place in the American Mainstream”. Indeed, more and more people are recognizing that the array of culinary delights from the Philippines rivals its 7,107 islands (nay, 7,641 as of last year’s new count) that make up one of the most gastronomically diverse archipelagos in Asia.
This food fact about the Philippines didn’t escape the curious mind of Ricky Resurreccion, ABS-CBN Global’s head of events and concurrent ABS-CBN North & Latin America head of ad sales, events & trade marketing.
“You see the mainstream write-ups and international food and travel icons raving over Philippine dishes as the next great world cuisine,” Resurreccion said. “At the same time, another growing trend around the world are fun runs with extra motivation: FOOD. So, for this year, why not create an event that celebrates family, fitness and Filipino flavors? Hence, the genesis of TIKIM.”
So, come Mother’s Day 2018 – that’s May 13, Sunday, starting at 8:00 a.m. – ABS-CBN The Filipino Channel (TFC) is bringing TIKIM (Filipino word meaning “to taste”) Filipino Food Fun Run, its first 5k fun run that will feature a Filipino taste station at every kilometer marker. The run will be held at Coyote Point Recreation Area, 1701 Coyote Point Dr in San Mateo. The Food Festival will begin at 10:00 am at the Duck Pond Area and picnic sites 5-8.
TIKIM also promotes social responsibility in the community. “It is a way to give back, as part of the proceeds of the TIKIM Fun Run registration will be donated to the feeding program of Bantay Bata (the Child Watch program of ABS-CBN Foundation International),” said Resurreccion.
By registering and joining the fun run, each participant would have provided meals for 10 malnourished children. Every month, ABS-CBN Foundation International’s Bantay Bata feeds 300 children with one nutritious meal a day during school time. By the end of the 4-month program within a school year, the Foundation makes sure that the nutritional requirements of these children are met.

The Universal Search for Home and Family Resonates in “Lost & Found:
A BA Original Documentary”
DALY CITY, Calif., March 01, 2018 – Nikki spent a good part of her childhood in an orphanage, malnourished to the point of losing her life. Four years ago, she weighed only 40 pounds. Now, Nikki has grown to a healthier 80 pounds. Then there is Jomar. That was his name back in the Philippines. After moving to the United States, he now goes by the name Ryder.
There are more children like Nikki and Ryder, orphans who have spent their younger years in shelters or institutions, longing for the love of a family.
Get to know their stories in “Lost & Found,” a BA Original Documentary that presents the journeys of children who were abandoned in their countries of birth, but who have found homes, hope and warmth in a snow-covered community in Bozeman, Montana.
BA Correspondent and “Lost & Found” writer/producer Steve Angeles learned about these communities of adopted Filipinos making their way to places like Montana. Angeles said, “BA’s purpose is to always find unique stories. We’re often exposed to the lives of Filipinos in places like San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, and this was a chance to see the lives of Filipinos that are on a unique journey compared to what we are used to.”
Troy Espera, BA Executive Producer, confirms the relevance and attraction of the documentary. “This was definitely a story BA could not pass up. ‘Lost & Found’ gives us an opportunity to explore a community of Filipinos in a place you’d least expect them to be – the Rocky Mountain community of Bozeman, Montana.”
Angeles also adds, “Despite what each child had been through, the love of a stranger had found them, and these kids have found their way into America’s Great Plains where they’re finding their way through life, achieving things that they may not have been able to do if it wasn’t for these everyday people extending their hands.”
Espera believes that “Lost & Found” is more than a Filipino story. It is also an American story. “We meet Americans with huge hearts who open their homes and their families to children from another land who desperately need love and care. During this divisive time in our country’s history, these families embody the values of compassion and community that we often look for in the greater debate around immigration.”
Watch these new Americans as they build new lives with their adopted families, while facing the challenges of adapting to the culture, climate and complexities of the country they now call home.
"Lost & Found" was filmed by Jeremiah Ysip, winner for Best Videographer in the 2017 Northern California Regional Emmy® Awards, and edited by Danny Manansala, who likewise worked on a regional Emmy® winning PSA. "Lost & Found," the newest addition to the BA Original Documentary collection, airs on TFC on Sunday, March 11, 2018, at 8:00 P.M., with a replay the following Saturday, March 17, 2018 at 4:25 P.M.

NaFFAA Expresses Concern Around White House’s Immigration Framework
New framework contains a provision limiting family sponsorships to “spouses and minor children only”
Washington, DC – Recently, the White House released itsFramework on Immigration Reform & Border Security, which contains a provision limiting family sponsorships to “spouses and minor children only,” thereby supporting the elimination of sponsorships for parents, adult children, and siblings.
According to the National Visa Center’s Annual Report of Immigrant Visa Applicants, there are more than 333,000 Filipinos waiting to reunite with their loved ones here in the United States.
Not only do Filipinos have the second highest number of family-sponsored waiting list registrants in the world (second only to Mexico), but they also suffer the longest wait times of any group: more than 23 years according to the latest Visa Bulletin.
In response to the White House’s immigration framework, theNational Federation of Filipino American Associations (NaFFAA)issued the following statement:
“While we agree that the White House’s proposed pathway to citizenship for DREAMers represents progress in the immigration debate, we believe that the additional restrictions they propose on family-based immigration is an affront to the American spirit of compassion and freedom,” said NaFFAA National Chairman Brendan Flores. “We believe that the focus of the current debate should be on the countless stories of reunified family members and how they have contributed to the freedom and opportunity of the American promise.”
Marie Cunning, member of NaFFAA’s Board of Governors, added: “As a national voice for Filipino Americans, NaFFAA expresses our concern for any proposal that would separate Filipino families from their loved ones. Family-based immigration has helped positively transform the lives of Filipino Americans across this great nation. With more than 333,000 Filipinos waiting in line, we encourage the Administration and Congress to support immigration reform that protects and expedites family reunification, instead of eliminating this fair and compassionate process.”

ABS-CBN Global’s Aileen Paredes Joins as Speaker
at 8th Asian Side of the Doc in Bangkok
MANILA, Philippines, February 7, 2018 – In an effort to become the hub of documentaries in Southeast Asia in accordance with government policy to promote creative businesses, Bangkok, Thailand played host from January 30 to February 2 to the 8th edition of Asian Side of the Doc (ASD), the international marketplace for factual programming in Asia.
ABS-CBN Global’s Female Specialty Channels Unit Head Aileen Paredes was one of the speakers on the first day in the panel on“ASEAN: What Does the Market Want?”. The premise of the session was that the content market in Southeast Asia has become more and more international in flavor and sophisticated in terms of taste. Localization of international formats, especially in the lifestyle and factual entertainment arena, has played a part in up-skilling the industry in some sectors, but is this true of documentary?
According to Paredes, Philippine “mainstream is dominated by drama” and there is a “dearth of documentaries that are socially relevant.”
Paredes added that “the next-gen market tends to go online -- to the likes of Vice and Viceland – and the short form docs you put in there.” She emphasized the need of ABS-CBN to deeply understand its evolving core and next gen markets, the content demands brought about by the viewing preference shift to digital, and how the company can help grow the documentary genre in the Asian region. She also mentioned the company’s new direction with ABS-CBN Global Studios and the intent to venture into co-production.
Joining Paredes in the panel were Pipope Panitchpakdi of Thai PBS, Shamala Rajendran of Mediacorp Pte Ltd of Singapore, Executive Director and Producer, Showrunner and Development Executive Chiara Bellati of Singapore, and Artine S. Utomo of Rajawali Televisi Indonesia.
Attracting 350 industry professionals from 35 countries, Asian Side of the Doc (ASD) had the following main activities:
Distributors Showcase – where content distributors from across Europe, North America, Australia and Asia Pacific presented their content that were open for pre-selling, acquisition, or co-production. Content offered included one-off documentaries, series, and digital or online versions.
Pitch Sessions – where various content producers presented their projects looking for funding or co-production.
An international jury composed of Somyos Kiataramkul, manager, Program Department – Thai PBS (Thailand), Claudia Bucher, head of THEMA & Geopolitics – ARTE G.E.I.E (France), Gunny Hyoung, executive producer – EBS Educational Broadcasting System (South Korea), and Rudy Buttignol, president and CEO – Knowledge Network (Canada) decided the awards for the best pitched projects among the 24 original stories coming from the Americas, Europe and Asia.
The winners are: “Small Island, Big Song: A Musical Odyssey” produced by Undergrowth Productions/Australia for Best International Project; “Life With A Robot”produced by Tokyo Video Center, Inc./Japan for Best Asian Project; “Duck Academy” produced by Payai Creation Co. Ltd./Thailand for Best ASEAN Project; “Walking the Road” produced by Mandarin Film/China for NBC Universal Archives Award; and “The Perfect Motion” produced by Aloest Productions/France for The Southeast Asia Audio-Visual Association (SAAVA) Award.
Business Matching – where ASD 2018 organizers arranged for meetings between program buyers and producers. The meetings lasted for 20 minutes each and done in succession very much like a dating game, complete with a bell to signal that time’s up.
Independently arranged meetings – where distributors (sellers) arranged meetings with program buyers months prior to the conference to present their content, build a network or explore co-productions.

DALY CITY, Calif, January 24, 2018 --- Still exuberant after a full year of delivering the news on its 15thyear of service to the Filipino American and Filipino Canadian communities across North America, BA was just recently in the news for making it to Media Newser Philippines’ list of 2017 wins.
Media Newser Philippines or MNP is an independent media news website which covers the Philippine television news industry, specifically ABS-CBN News, GMA News, News5, and CNN Philippines.
BA Executive Producer Troy Espera stresses that “while BA’s mission is to empower and connect Filipinos throughout North America through news that affects us here, we know that there’s value to sharing these same stories with viewers in the Philippines.” Espera recognizes the global relevance and impact of the stories they tell on BA. He adds that “anyone back home who catches BA on any of ABS-CBN News’ TV or digital platforms can get a taste of the issues, the struggles, and the triumphs involving our kababayan in this part of the world.
In their annual year ender, Media Newser Philippines recognized local organizations, programs, and individuals who have made significant contributions to the industry in 2017. On the other end, they also called out those who have “failed to fulfill their obligations.”
BA made it to MNP’s Winners’ List. According to Media Newser Philippines, “After a so-so 2016, Balitang America rebounded and recovered last year, thanks largely to the stewardship of Troy Espera, the program’s executive producer; and news desk editor and reporter Henni Espinosa. Aside from guiding and mentoring its award-winning global reporters – Don Tagala, Steve Angeles, Yong Chavez, Bev Llorente, Rommel Conclara, Jared Bray, Connie Macatula-De Leon, and co. – the power tandem also brought in a new sense of purpose and energy to the 15-year-old TFC broadcast.”
Espera acknowledges the vote of approval saying, “This latest recognition inspires our team, and strengthens our commitment to serve BA viewers, wherever they may be.”

ABS-CBN’s Anti-Piracy Efforts Praised for “Massive Impact”
Recent legal win not only grants ABS-CBN ownership of associated domain names; it can keep the pirate sites'
previously seized advertising revenue from networks including Google Adsense and MGID
DALY CITY, CA, January 12, 2018 – Torrent Freak, a major publication dedicated to bringing the latest news about copyright, privacy, and everything related to filesharing, recently came out with an article that praised ABS-CBN, the world’s largest Filipino media and entertainment network, for the “massive impact” of its anti-piracy efforts.
In the story entitled, “Media Giant Keeps Seized Revenue from Pirate Sites”, written by no less than Torrent Freak Founder and Editor-in-Chief Ernesto Van Der Sar, it was mentioned that ABS-CBN has “filed a series of lawsuits against pirate sites in the US… (and) has already won several cases with damages ranging from a few hundred thousand to millions of dollars. However, the associated injunctions in these cases are perhaps even more significant.”
“We previously covered how ABS-CBN managed to get court orders to seize domain names, without the defendants getting actively involved,” wrote Van Der Sar. “This is also the case in a recent lawsuit where a Florida federal court signed a broad injunction targeting more than two dozen sites that offered the company’s content. The websites, including abscbn-teleserye.com, dramascools.com, tvnijuan.org,pinoydailyshows.com and weeklywarning.org, may not be known to a broad audience but their domain names have all been suspended, linking to a takedown message instead.
“What’s most interesting, however, is that the advertising revenues of these sites were previously frozen. This was done to ensure that ABS-CBN would at least get some money if the defendants failed to respond, a strategy that seems to have paid off.
“After the targeted site owners failed to respond, ABS-CBN requested a default judgment with damages for trademark and copyright infringement.
“U.S. District Court Judge Cecilia Altonaga has now signed the order, awarding the media company over a million dollars in statutory trademark infringement damages. In addition, several of the sites must also pay copyright infringement damages.
“The default judgment also orders associated registrars and registries to hand over the domain names to ABS-CBN. Thus far several domains have been seized already, but some foreign companies have not complied, most likely because they fall outside the US jurisdiction.
“The most interesting part of the order, however, is that Judge Altonaga grants ABS-CBN the previously seized advertising revenues.
“The sites in question used advertising services from a variety of well-known networks, including Google Adsense, MGID, Popads, AdsKeeper, and Bidvertiser. None of these companies responded in court after the initial seizure order, suggesting that they did not object.”
Van Der Sar concludes: “This is the first time, to our knowledge, that a copyright holder has been granted advertising revenue from pirate sites in this manner.”
This could be a common legal tactic going forward because, generally speaking, it is very hard to get money from defaulting defendants who are relatively anonymous, or living in a foreign jurisdiction,” Van Der Sar added. “By going after the advertisers, copyright holders have a good chance of securing some money, at least.”
ABS-CBN intensified and advanced its anti-piracy efforts in the last three years under former ABS-CBN Global COO Raffy Lopez (now retired and continuing as Executive Adviser to the President and CEO of ABS-CBN) with the hiring of ABS-CBN’s AVP & Head of Global Anti-Piracy Elisha Lawrence.
