Kapuso star Jaclyn Jose is first Filipina Best Actress at Cannes Film Festival
Filipinos all over the world celebrated with Kapuso star Jaclyn Jose as she became the first Filipina to win the Best Actress Award at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival.
Jaclyn bested other nominees, including internationally-acclaimed actresses Charlize Theron and Marion Cotillard, for her portrayal of an impoverished mother forced to sell drugs in the film Ma’Rosa by the critically-acclaimed director Brillante Mendoza.
The award came as a shock to Jaclyn, who is among the Philippines’ most respected actresses. The star, who has walked down numerous red carpets, was visibly stunned when her name was announced. “I am so surprised. I just went to have the red carpet walk with my daughter, my real-life daughter and my daughter in the movie also,” she said as she received the award on stage.
While it was not her first Cannes experience, Jaclyn says it was even more significant because she got to share the experience with her daughter and co-star in the movie, Andi Eigenmann.
“I would also like to share this recognition to all the Filipinos who are here now, to my daughter, to Brillante (director), to my countrymen, to the Philippines. Thank you, Mr. President, thank you to all the jury. Thank you so much for loving our work. Thank you so much,” she said during her acceptance speech.
Festival jurors praised her performance saying she “broke everybody’s hearts” and she deserved the win. “Alam ko, in my heart, meron ako nagawa na mapapatinag ko ang damdamin nila [I know in my heart that I did a scene that would really move them],” she says of the film’s closing scene where she was seen eating fishballs.
With the huge interest drummed up by her milestone win in the international scene, Jaclyn hopes that the local viewers will also have a chance to watch the film. “We’re hoping na mapanood ng mga tao ito para naman mapakinabangan yung essence ng pelikula [We’re hoping that people will be able to watch it so that we can benefit from the essence of the film],” she expresses.
Now that she is back in the country, Jaclyn is preparing to return to the small screen via the new sexy comedy series on GMA, A1 Ko Sa ‘Yo, where she plays the lead role of a tactless and frustrated beauty pageant aspirant and owner of A1 Talent Agency who is relentlessly in search of the perfect beauty queen.
Catch the light, funny and naughty series as it premieres on June 2 on GMA Network’s flagship international channel, GMA Pinoy TV. (30)
