MA marking criteria for Research Presentation (staff)

These are the 2021-22 academic year criteria. To refer to the new criteria please see Research Presentation.

These marking criteria are to be read in conjunction with the advice given to students about the nature and purpose of the prescribed tasks in the module descriptions.

Content

Distinction

70+

A sophisticated and theoretically aware presentation that explores the methodological issues around the source material in an informed and perceptive way.

Merit

60-69

A carefully explained and clear presentation that conveys a good sense of the sources used and the methodological issues around them.

Pass

50-59

A coherent presentation but with some omissions or lack of clarity in the presentation of concepts and ideas and a lack of theoretical engagement.

Fail

30-49

A descriptive list of sources, with little defined structure or analysis. There may be errors or material included may be irrelevant to the topic.

Rambling and unstructured.

Indicates work either not submitted or unworthy of marking.

Communication

Distinction

70+

Uses very effective ways of conveying information, concepts and ideas. Communicates difficult or abstruse ideas in a clear and intelligible way and responds to questions in a perceptive and interesting way.

Merit

60-69

Effective in conveying information, ideas, and concepts to the audience. Responds to questions directly in a coherent and informed manner.

Pass

50-59

Conveys information and some ideas to the audience. Responses to questions are clear and coherent but limited.

Fail

30-49

The presentation is confused or hard to follow. Provides only basic or incomplete answers to questions. 

1-29

Muddled and difficult to follow. Answers to questions are irrelevant or flippant.
