Postgraduate Taught - Careers Timeline

Read the Post Graduate Career Calendar for a month-by-month timeline and then refer to the resources below for more detail. It’s a good idea to start thinking about your career plans very early on in your Masters year so that you don’t miss out, eg, deadlines for some popular graduate schemes are as early as Oct/Nov.

  • If you are new to Sheffield, the university has lots of extra-curricular activities to help you settle in and meet new people. If you need a part-time job, the Careers Service can help you find something to fit around your studies.

  • Start keeping track of the skills you have developed through your studies, work, volunteering or any positions of responsibility. mySkills is a simple online tool to help track your progress - and it provides a handy reference point when applying for jobs or postgraduate research in future.

  • Make an early start on your graduate job hunting strategy - employers start advertising graduate positions from late September onwards, some with closing dates as early as Oct or Nov even though the job doesn’t start until the following summer/autumn. Participate in Careers Service recruitment fairs in Oct and other events later on. Talk to your tutors/lecturers if you are thinking about PG research.

  • You can use the Careers Service for up to 3 years after you graduate, so join the TUoS Graduate Careers Support Network on LinkedIn and keep in touch.
