Unique Lighting

This image is a photo of my friend Adams, during a night walk on Willard Beach in South Portland. In order to create this image, I didn't have a tripod on me, but I knew I would have to open up my shutter speed, which means I could not have camera shake. So, I placed the camera on a rock on the jette, and I had Adams stand directly in front of the street light in the far distance. I chose to create this specific image because I wanted to challenge myself with photography during the night. I've never been very good at it, so I wanted to see how it turned out with the ambient street light. Elements and principals used in this photo include the following: line, shape, color, space, contrast, and emphasis. For example, emphasis is used because the figure that you see is completely black on the orange light, which emphasizes the figure, and nicely contrasts with the orange which is fading out to black.

A composition rule and technique showcased in this image silhouette lighting, because the light in the back round cancels out the details on the figure, which makes it silhouette lighting. In order to change and revise this image to make it better, I started to use the rocks as a tripod instead of just holding the camera in my hand which I quickly found out makes the photo very blurring when you are shooting night photos.

One night, my friends and I decided to go for a walk on the beach together. I brought my camera, hoping to capture some cool photos! When I saw the street light, I was inspired to have one of my friends stand in front of it, which I knew would create silhouette lighting. It relates to my concentration, societal issues, because it was taken during the night in the winter. This is a very hard time for homeless, especially in Portland, where this photo was taken, because of the extreme cold whether. This project relates to my life because it is a photo of my friend, and whenever I look at this photo, I am reminded of the fun night we had taking photos and walking on the beach. If I could make this photo stronger, I would try to incorporate more composition rules and techniques into my image, such as low horizon line, framing, or rule of thirds. All of which I believe would make this image much more powerful.
