Linocut Relief Print

This assignment was quite different than all the other ones that we have done this year. Instead of applying ink to paper directly, we carved out the material into a portrait of ourselves. We colored in the portrait on the carving block so that we knew what areas to cut out, and which ones to keep. After I completed the carving process, I moved onto the printing process. There were four prints we needed to complete. The first being a plain black on white. The second was a self made back round (one we drew on after the print). The third was an alternate back round. And the fourth was artist choice. (The prints pictured above are in this order). For the self drawn back round, I made a star consillation and I used flower wallpaper for the alternate back round. My personal favorite out of this series was the artist choice print because I like the simplicity of it. The dark on dark is dramatic and creates emotion, yet simplicity. It was a challenging project, but whenever I ran into a problem in the printing process I would just carve out more so that that area wouldn't transfer onto the paper.
