Artist/Art Movement Inspired

Explain how your artwork demonstrates inspiration and knowledge of your chosen art movement.

For my midterm art project, I chose to base my work off of the minimalism movement. In art, the definition of minimalism is, “a style or technique that is characterized by extreme spareness and simplicity.” Since the trend arose in the 1950s, the style is rather modern. After researching this movement, in-depth, I couldn’t wait to try out creating some more examples of minimalism that were floating around in my head. I believe that my artwork follows the rules of minimalism for a plethora of reasons. One of these reasons being that all works of art in the minimalist movement are simple, include little detail, and are very basic. Therefore, when I made all 20 of my pieces, I ensured that all drawings and paintings were as simple as possible. Every piece includes either basic lines, dots, or brush strokes. All pieces are easy on the eyes, and don’t involve a lot of detail. I made the decision to not include color in any of my pieces of art because I wanted to keep them all as clean and quiet as possible. The elements of art included in these pieces are, color, form, line, shape, space and value. In conclusion, my artwork demonstrates how I was inspired by the minimalism art movement because I educated myself on the movement by admiring different examples of pieces included in the movement, then created some of my own. I believe that these uncomplicated, straightforward pieces are beautiful, and I very much enjoyed engaging my attention in this gratifying and rewarding project.
