Creating Flat Positive and Negative Spaces

The subject of my image is a tree. In order to create this image, I laid down on the ground on my back and pointed the camera upwards towards the branches and the sky. Elements used are lines, shape, color, and space. Principals used are contrast, rhythm, and unity.

The composition rules and techniques showcased in this image include formal balance because the image is mostly symmetrical, silhouette lighting (the branches), and grouping. In order to change and revise this image, I had to play around with the shutter speed. Since the lens was pointed directly into the sky, it was a weird amount of light being let in, especially considering the overcast sky and the cloudy-ness of the day.

This project relates to my life because this tree is one that has been showcased in my yard for as long as I can remember. When I was younger, I would climb it all the time. Even now, I still look at it every time I drive up the driveway. If I could make this image any stronger, I would change it to black and white because I don't really like the blue sky in the back round. It looks too edited. I think the black and white would look more classic and professional.
