Still Life

The subject of this image, is a glass of wine, that seems to be almost gone. In order to create this image, I got a bit of wine, (with my parents consent of course), and I placed it on my desk with my phone flashlight shining on the side of the glass at such an angle so that the shadow casted would align with the given lense distance. I chose to create this specific image because it deals with my concentration. I used the elements of line, shape, texture and space in this photo. As well as the principle of contrast which can be easily spotted because the photo is in black and white. The different shades of grey vastly vary contrast each other, which I think gives a nice compliment to the photo itself.

I made sure to use the composition rules and techniques of rule of thirds, selective focus, and low key lighting. All of which are very self explanatory. After taking many photos of the wine glass on it's side, I decided to stand it right side up. I liked this outcome a lot better because of the shadow that it cast on the wall.

I wanted to incorporate societal issues into this photo, and the first problem that is prevalent in our society is alcoholism which, in many cases, stems from depression or anxiety which is a problem in itself. By photographing a glass of wine that is almost completely gone, I believe that it represents the sense of people not being able to stop. The shadow also represents the fact that it always follows you. Although this topic doesn't relate directly to my life, I feel for those who struggle with this. if I could make this image stronger, I would try to make it more focused on the glass in front so the shadow would be more dramatic.
